Turn Back Time: All Four UVA Health Medical Centers Host 2025 Night Shift Celebrations

"Saturday night, we're sending you back to the future!"
— Doc Brown, "Back to the Future," 1985

Night shift team members at University Medical Center in Charlottesville — and at Culpeper, Haymarket, and Prince William Medical Centers in Northern Virginia — excitedly marked the annual fall time change to Daylight Standard Time with “Fall Back” celebrations.

Best Place to Work

The theme for a third consecutive year at University Medical Center — “Fall Back to the Future,” celebrated overnight Saturday, Nov. 1 into Sunday, Nov. 2 at 2 a.m. — as clocks reverted one hour to 1 a.m.

And with music, decorations, and garb reminiscent of the 1980s — the decade of the debut of the “Back to the Future” movies — the night shift gave a nod to the blockbuster franchise which is marking its 40th anniversary this year!

Supporting a strategic plan initiative of Best Place to Work by cultivating a supportive and inclusive environment for team members — Charlottesville's University Medical Center Human Resources Rewards and Recognition team hosted the festivities in the hospital cafeteria which also featured free espresso, coffee, and hot chocolate from Higher Grounds (with extended hours), 600 cookies from Great Harvest Baking Company, and giveaways!

Night shift team members also had the opportunity to meet with representatives from various departments, including (above, from left: Sgt. Ann-Marie Bell, UVA Security, and Sgt. Andrew Weaver, University Medical Center Safetty Support Unit, UVA Police Department) about programs and resources.

For team members who couldn’t make it to the cafeteria for the celebration — R&R delivered candy and other snacks to Pegasus, Call Center, Cardiac Monitoring Unit, and Stacey Hall Lab teams.

Warp Speed

“Providing coffee, espresso, and locally baked goods to the night shift at this annual event is such a fun tradition,” describes Elizabeth Feola, Rewards and Recognition Specialist. “The Higher Grounds staff [pictured below] is so wonderful — for two and a half hours they work behind the counter at warp speed while people are happy to stand in line awaiting their free, beautifully crafted drinks. We all sing Whitney Houston and George Michael hits and make bets on which cookie flavor will go the fastest. This year, the sugar cookie with orange and black sprinkles is the most popular!”

UVA Community Health

UVA Health’s three medical centers in Northern Virginia also thanked night shift team members for keeping things running smoothly and taking great care of patients. Their celebrations included cornhole and coloring pages, and donuts and coffee, organized by the Rewards and Recognition team led by Mandy Dickinson, Director, Support Services, UVA Community Health: “It was great to see the night shift team members enjoying the treats — and each other's company,” she says. “We appreciate your hard work and commitment to those we serve!”

Leaders who joined the overnight festivities included:

Thank you to night shift team members and all our team members who support the UVA Health mission of transforming health and inspiring hope for all Virginians and beyond.
