U.S. News Recognizes High Performing Specialties and Procedures

Dear Colleagues,

Each year at this time, "U.S. News & World Report" releases its “Best Hospitals” guide, with national and regional rankings across hospitals, specialties and procedures and conditions. The 2021-2022 results were released today, and UVA Medical Center has been recognized as high performing in six clinical specialties as well as in 15 out of 17 eligible common adult clinical conditions and procedures. We are encouraged by these rankings and so proud of the teams that have contributed to these results.

Although UVA Medical Center did not have any ranked specialties in the national top 50 this year, and we moved from No. 1 to No. 2 in the Virginia “best hospital” rankings, we know that it is challenging for any one rating to fully recognize all we do to provide exceptional care for our patients. The year-over-year "U.S. News" rankings reveal a consistent decline over the past five years across "U.S. News" ranked specialties. We are in the process of reviewing the data and the newly updated methodology "U.S. News" uses to compile its ratings. Once our review is complete, we will develop a plan that ensures we are able to make the improvements that will not only boost our reputation but will also allow us to provide more patients across the Commonwealth with exceptional care.

By continuing to leverage the extraordinary expertise of our teams, we will continue to deliver excellence at the bedside, providing the best care for our patients as well as support for our healthcare teams. The journey to improving our rankings will take time as many of the scoring components are calculated based upon a three-year rolling average. We are committed to our vision of enhancing our reputation as a nationally recognized health system and finding new and better ways to care for our patients. Together, we know this vision is achievable.

Thank you for your steadfast dedication and for working so diligently to make UVA Health the very best it can be for our patients and community.

Sincerely,

Wendy Horton, PharmD, MBA
