UVA Health Team Members,  

As of this afternoon, the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Storm Watch for much of our area from Sunday afternoon into Monday evening. During that time, heavy snow, sleet, and freezing rain are possible with anticipated snow and sleet accumulations of up to 5 inches or greater, along with ice accumulations up to 0.25 inches for portions of central, northwest, and western Virginia and eastern West Virginia. 

Given these forecasted conditions, our Hospitality and Support Services team will be offering overnight accommodations for team members who need to stay at the University Medical Center on Sunday night. If you need accommodations for Sunday night, please inform your manager. From there, the Welcome Team will begin supporting accommodations at the Main Lobby Information Desk beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 5. Upon checking in at the front desk, beds will be assigned, and team members will receive a Confirmation Slip for Overnight Accommodations, as well as a meal voucher, toiletry kit, linens, and Sani-Wipes. For those staying overnight, rooms must be vacated by 6 a.m. Please do not swap rooms after they have been assigned. 

For those commuting around University Medical Center grounds, please ensure you are wearing the appropriate footwear, take slow and careful steps, and restrict your routes to sidewalks and crosswalks — do not walk through areas that may be slippery and/or unsafe. As a reminder, University Medical Center has partnered with the following hotels (below) to provide team members with lodgings at a discounted rate. It is the responsibility of the team member to coordinate directly with the hotel of their choice. Please note that individuals are responsible for all hotel costs. Upon calling the point of contact listed to book accommodations and to receive the negotiated rate, the following code must be provided: MCSNOW25

Update #2: Weather Awareness for Jan. 5-6 — Team Member Accommodations

At this time, the National Weather Service (NWS) predicts the potential for 1-4 inches of snow and the possibility of ice on Sunday, Jan. 5, into Monday, Jan. 6, 2025. With inclement weather expected, our Hospitality and Support Services team will be offering overnight accommodations for team members who may need to stay at the Medical Center on Sunday night. If you need accommodations because of safety concerns for traveling to and from home, please inform your manager and stay tuned for additional guidance. The Welcome Team will also begin supporting accommodations at the Medical Center Main Lobby Information Desk at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 5.

• Monitor weather forecasts via the National Weather Service, local media, and Virginia511 (for traffic and road conditions).
• Consider an emergency alert app, like UVA Ready, FEMA or the Red Cross.
• Monitor your phone as updated information will be shared via UVA Alerts. To confirm your enrollment in UVA Alerts, click here.    

Preparedness

• Protect yourself and family with a Family Emergency Plan.  
• Pet owners should have plans to care for their animals.  
• Put together a basic disaster supplies kit, or “Go-Kit” if you do not already have one. During severe weather, you may need to arrive early to work or be held over.

In response, Emergency Management and the UVA Health leadership team will continue to monitor conditions for potential operational changes at University Medical Center and our Ambulatory settings. 

Please be aware of the following: 

• As of now, the NWS has not issued any advisories, watches, or warnings for our area. Please note that while we recognize the variation of predictions across multiple platforms/services, our University Medical Center makes weather-related decisions based on data from the National Weather Service.  
• We will provide email updates with new information and forecasting as it becomes available. 
• Tomorrow we will provide communications about overnight accommodations for team members. 
• We will also provide real-time updates during this event on uvahealth.com/status.
