‘Uplifting Experience’: Inaugural Radiothon Raises $25,000+ for UVA Health Children’s
Eight Harrisonburg Media Group radio stations raised $25,613 for UVA Health Children’s on Sept. 26 in the first Valley Cares for Kids Radiothon. More than two dozen volunteers — including UVA Health team members, radio station staff, and community members — answered calls and processed donations via a live phone bank, text, and online.
“When I heard about the UVA Health Children’s Radiothon, I knew I had to volunteer,” says Debbie Diehl. “I have grandchildren who have needed UVA Health, and the doctors and staff provided awesome care for each of them! This experience has been uplifting and I will help again!”
Each year, more than 30,000 patients from Harrisonburg and surrounding counties visit UVA Health Children’s. The event, supporting the UVA Health strategic plan mission of transforming health and inspiring hope for all Virginians and beyond, broadcast emotional stories of UVA Health Children’s patients and their families and care providers.
Erin Chandler, UVA Health’s Associate Director of Development for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and Corporate Philanthropy, reports the funds support initiatives including:
- UVA Health Children’s Patient and Family-Centered Care program, which, among other things, helps families with lodging, meals, and transportation during their child’s hospital stay.
- Pediatric research to find new treatments and cures.
- Purchase and update of specialized equipment critical to patient care.
