UVA Health Culpeper Medical Center ED Tech-Paramedic’s Advocacy and Attention to Detail Saves a Child
“It was Bekah Tapolcai's sense of ‘this isn't right’ that potentially saved this child from danger. Her inquisitive nature and confidence in advocacy truly made a difference in this child's future.”
Congratulations to UVA Health Culpeper Medical Center Emergency Department Tech-Paramedic Rebekah Tapolcai on earning a BEE (Being Excellent Everyday) Award, which honors the significant relationship between nursing and other care team members, and celebrates such team members for Being Excellent Everyday.
Jen Kauffman, RN, Assistant Nurse Manager, Emergency Department nominated Tapolcai:
Trusting Her Instincts and Stepping In
Kauffman recounts the situation that Tapolcai’s attention to detail and quick thinking forestalled: “While Bekah was working in the atrium, a mother and her young child entered the facility. Bekah recognized what she saw as an unstable situation, and contacted Child Protective Services and law enforcement to ensure the safety of the child.
“It was Bekah's sense of ‘this isn't right’ that saved this child from potential danger. Her inquisitive nature and confidence in advocacy truly made a difference in this child's future.”
In Her Own Words
Tapolcai has been with UVA Health for seven years, and has career goals of becoming a nurse in the future. When asked about how it feels to win the BEE Award, she answers, “It means a lot to be recognized and I am proud to be able keep patients safe.”
