UVA Health Culpeper Medical Center Nurse’s 50-Year Legacy Built on Empathetic Care and Supportive Mentorship

Teresa Campbell's "wisdom and guidance have shaped the culture of our organization and left an indelible mark on all who have had the privilege of working alongside her.”

Our DAISY Award stories typically applaud specific instances of extraordinary compassion in nursing. In this one, though, UVA Health celebrates a Culpeper Medical Center nurse reaching 50 years of heartfelt care filled with such instances! Teresa Campbell, RN, a Clinical Unit Leader in Orthopedics, was nominated by Karen Levalley, Medical Assistant, Culpeper Medical Center: “It is with immense pride and gratitude that we congratulate Teresa on her extraordinary milestone of 50 years as a registered nurse.”

UVA Community Health Nursing Professional Governance Organization (NPGO) honors UVA Health Culpeper Medical Center nurses each quarter with a DAISY Award.

Half-Century of Service

Campbell’s dedication to nursing is a testament to her love for her work and her patients, and the past 50 years assuredly encompass several special, commendable moments of care and support. Levalley shares: “Her half-century of service is not just a testament to this professional commitment, but a reflection of the deep-seated compassion that has guided her every action. Over the past five decades, Teresa has been a constant, steady force of healing and care, bearing witness to incredible changes in the healthcare landscape.”

“She has navigated transitions from paper charts to complex digital systems, adapted to new technologies, and shown unwavering resilience through it all. All the while, her focus has remained on the fundamental, human element of nursing — the kind touch, the reassuring smile, and the listening ear that makes all the difference to a patient and their family.”

Mentorship and Clinical Excellence

Alongside patient interactions, Teresa’s passion also can be found in the help she has extended to her colleagues throughout her nursing tenure. “Teresa's legacy is written not in a single achievement, but in the countless lives she has touched, comforted, and healed," explains Levalley. "She has mentored generations of new nurses, instilling in them the importance of empathy, integrity, and clinical excellence. Teresa's wisdom and guidance have shaped the culture of our organization and left an indelible mark on all who have had the privilege of working alongside her.”

“As Teresa celebrates this incredible milestone, we hope she knows how much we admire and appreciate her. Her hard work, sacrifice, and unwavering professionalism are an inspiration to us all. Teresa: thank you for being a true hero in every sense of the word.”

In Her Own Words

The past six of Campbell’s 50 years of nursing have been with UVA Health. “My career goals are to continue as I am in Orthopedics and I hope to continue teaching staff and new nurses how to care for our orthopedic patients with understanding, empathy, and compassion. I also strive to teach patients and their families how to care for their own conditions and have the best possible outcomes for them.”

When asked about receiving this award, she calls it “very special, knowing my peers thought enough of my work, character, and person to be nominated for this. As a nurse, you do your work to the best of your ability without any recognition. Then, when you are recognized, it is very touching and humbling. It makes you feel like you have done a good job!”

Know a Fabulous Nurse?

"DAISY" stands for "Diseases Attacking the Immune System." The DAISY Award was established by The DAISY Foundation in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at the age of only 33 of an autoimmune disease. The Barnes Family was awestruck by the clinical skills, caring, and compassion of his nurses — so they created this national award to thank nurses everywhere.

Patients or their family members; visitors; and team members can submit a nomination for a UVA Health Culpeper, Haymarket, or Prince William Medical Center nurse.
