UVA Health Implements Metal Detectors at its Three Community Hospitals
After careful consideration and input from team members, providers, public safety and the community, on July 6, UVA Health made the decision to implement metal detectors at the entrances of the Emergency Departments of UVA Health Prince William, Haymarket, and Culpeper Medical Centers. These measures also were implemented in the Behavioral Health Unit at 8680 Hospital Way on the Prince William Medical Center campus.
Patients and visitors using these designated entrances will pass through metal detector screening. These screening procedures are similar to those in place at the UVA Health University Medical Center, other health systems, and public venues.
Patients and visitors entering these designated areas will be instructed via signage and with support of UVA Health Public Safety team members, to secure any weapons in their vehicle or in the amnesty box near the entrance. Items placed in the amnesty box will not be returned, so it is imperative that patients and visitors either return weapons securely to their vehicle or be prepared to part with them indefinitely.
This is an important endeavor as UVA Health continues in this journey to make its facilities the best place to provide and receive care.
