Dear UVA Health Team Members,

Today, UVA Health and Riverside Health System in Eastern Virginia are thrilled to announce an exciting new partnership that will build on UVA Health’s institutional strengths and expertise to deliver advanced, specialized care to patients throughout the state of Virginia. UVA Health will acquire a minority ownership interest in Riverside Health System — including its hospitals in Newport News, Williamsburg, Gloucester and Onancock.

Working together, our two health systems will now partner and collaborate across multiple areas, including clinical program development, research, and graduate medical education. Our first collaborative clinical service will be a joint cardiothoracic surgery program at Riverside Health System’s flagship hospital in Newport News where a broad range of cardiothoracic surgical services will be offered. As we move forward with our collaboration, UVA Health and Riverside Health System will continue to enhance care coordination between our two institutions across several care areas, including adult and pediatric transplantation and advanced cancer treatments.

This new affiliation — supported by the excellent care provided by our UVA Health teams — will bring us closer to fulfilling our mission of transforming health and inspiring hope for all Virginians and beyond. In addition, this venture will build on other existing partnerships between UVA Health and health systems across Virginia to assure that patients throughout the Commonwealth have access to comprehensive and exceptional patient care.

For UVA Health, this new partnership represents another major step forward in broadening our statewide footprint through strategic relationships — a key initiative of our 10-year Strategic Plan: “One Future Together — Health and Hope for All.”

We are enormously grateful to have the opportunity to partner with such a high quality and like-minded organization as Riverside Health System as well as their talented leadership team. We optimistically embrace this successful collaboration as we partner to provide extraordinary care to such an important patient population.
