UVA Health Update | April 2024
UVA Health Kicks Off Statewide Advertising Campaign
Today UVA Health launched a brand advertising campaign that will reach audiences across the Commonwealth of Virginia. With the theme “Driven to Bring Hope to Life,” the advertisements feature a cast of UVA Health researchers, providers, and nurses. Running in various key markets across Virginia, the campaign will run on TV, streaming video, radio, social media, and other channels through the end of July.
“We want Virginians to know that there is no other health system in the state that can provide the breadth and depth of high-quality care that UVA Health can, as conveniently as UVA Health can,” said Lisa Badeau, chief marketing and communications officer. “This campaign will differentiate UVA Health from peer organizations and position us as more accessible, innovative, and inclusive.” Learn more on Connect.

Construction Update: Fontaine Research Park
Fontaine Research Park is undergoing an exciting and significant transformation with the development of the Paul and Diane Manning Institute of Biotechnology. To support this expansion, a new parking garage and central utility plant also are part of the plan. Please review the information and timeline to prepare for major changes over the next three months. For the latest information on the Fontaine projects, visit the Facilities Management website. For more details, refer to the April 26 email from Min Lee, MBA, MHA, Chief Operating Officer, UVA Health University Medical Center, and Jeremy Sibiski, MBA, MHA, Chief Operating Officer, UVA School of Medicine, or visit Connect.
Traffic Enforcement
UVA Police is monitoring the 11th Street and Emmet/Ivy Garages on an ongoing basis and will conduct traffic enforcement as needed. Monitoring and enforcement is a result of numerous complaints concerning vehicles driving at excessive speeds as they exit these garages. Police officers will issue warnings and uniform summons to violators.
Operational Update: Masking Protocols
Seasonal influenza and COVID-19 activity continues to decline in most areas of the country, including Virginia, per the CDC’s Influenza Surveillance Report and COVID Data Tracker. Following updated guidance from UVA Health’s Infection Prevention and Control team, we will implement adjustments to our masking protocols effective May 1, 2024, at 7 a.m.
Clinical areas where masking is currently optional will continue to be mask optional. Masking will continue to be required in areas where we have high concentrations of high-risk patients.
We are no longer requiring all non-influenza vaccinated team members (clinical and non-clinical) to mask unless they work in an area where masks are required. However, as encouraged during the COVID-19 pandemic and flu season, everyone should consider their personal risk when making decisions about masking.
For a detailed list of updated masking requirements and next steps, please refer to the April 25 email from Reid Adams, MD, Chief Medical Officer, and Costi Sifri, MD, Hospital Epidemiologist, or visit Connect.

Video Series | Research in Motion
Have you been keeping up with the weekly video series Research in Motion? In it, researchers are asked three questions: What do you do? What do you love about your research? How will it impact human health? View the latest:
- Ling Qi, PhD (pictured) | "I have enjoyed the process of unlocking the secrecy of how the protein degradation system works in physiology, and how it breaks down in disease. The other aspect I enjoy the most as a basic scientist is the training of the next generation of scientists."
- Jie Sun, PhD | "I direct a respiratory immunology lab studying pulmonary immunity and pathology in the context of lung infection and cancer. I also mentor undergraduate and graduate student postdoc fellows, as well as a junior faculty in the lab."
- Anne Kenworthy, PhD | "We use a wide range of approaches — from computer models to looking at cellular components, to studying the protein structure at an atomic level — to understand how proteins that are found at the surface of cells contribute to cell function."
- Roger Anderson, PhD | "My research is dedicated to reducing and eliminating social disparities in cancer incidence and outcomes. A lot of my research has been focused on rural cancer disparities, especially in Appalachia, where we see high rates of incidence and mortality from breast cancer, colorectal cancer, cervical cancer, and lung cancer."
Thank you to these researchers — and all our colleagues who advance medical knowledge — for conducting research that shapes the medicine we deliver tomorrow, and how we deliver it. New Research in Motion videos are posted every Friday on Connect.

'Absolute Gem’ | Kudos for Our UVA Health Colleagues
To provide the best possible service and care for our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their recent healthcare experience. Below is a small selection of recent feedback praising our outstanding team members:
- “Dr. Stranix is well known among the trans community in the area, and gender affirming-related medical professionals, as well. I've seen his work improve the lives of people I know, and I'm excited to work with him for my own. The appointment with him provided great insight in how I can expect the surgery and subsequent weeks to play out.”
- “I'm glad the telehealth options are reliable, as I don't live in Charlottesville and the costs of missing work to travel to in-person appointments would be a significant barrier. It also means I'll be able to recover with family members, without constantly driving between [home] and Charlottesville during the early stages.”
- “Everyone at [UVA Health Mammography] is absolutely delightful. The woman at the front desk with the walker is knowledgeable, kind, and professional. The mammography nurse is an absolute gem. She is so incredibly wonderful. I wish she could be my nurse in other parts of my life. She is DAISY Award material!”
- “Jim is an outstanding individual who has helped me heal and move through a very difficult time in my life when I didn't think I would walk any distance. He has always been so helpful and willing to answer my questions and concerns. His expertise and support has been so important to my recovery. He should be recognized or rewarded as an outstanding employee of your organization. There are only a few that I would recognize this way.”
Thanks to all our team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care.

Pediatric Transplant Programs Excelling Thanks to High Volumes, More Living Donors, and Dedicated Teams
Near the end of Donate Life Month comes National Pediatric Transplant Awareness Week (April 21-27), celebrating “the gift of life provided through pediatric donation and transplant.” Here at UVA Health, we have much to celebrate. Our pediatric transplant programs — heart, liver, and kidney — have seen incredible success in the past year. More successful pediatric organ transplants mean more kids have a chance to live life to the fullest.
Transplant Program veteran and Lead Living Donor Transplant Coordinator Anita Sites, NP, says, “For any transplant to take place, whether it's an adult or a child, no matter what organ, to get them to that to the operating room requires a significant amount of time and energy and collaboration from physicians and surgeons, advanced practice providers, nurse coordinators, nutrition, pharmacy, finance, social work, child life specialists, psychology, and others, all working to get this person approved for a transplant.”
“And that’s just the beginning. Then you have the transplant itself and the long road to recovery. There’s an endless number of people involved. Everyone is key and plays an important part. If just one team member isn't present or able to contribute, then it's not going to go the way that it needs to go.”
Thank you to all UVA Health team members who diligently care for our young patients! Read more on Connect.

- After 14 additional days, if the access review is still not complete, a new access request must be entered to reinstate access.

'The Littlest Efforts Are a Big Deal' | Kudos for Our UVA Health Colleagues
To provide the best possible service and care for our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their recent healthcare experience. Below is a small selection of recent feedback praising our outstanding team members:
- “I have encouraged people to go to UVA Health no matter what health conditions they have. In my opinion, it is the best hospital in the nation. If it hadn't been for the best surgeons and staff, I would not be here. The nurses are top notch. I can't say enough good things about UVA Health.”
- “Dr. O was fantastic. Never in 55 years could I see as clear as I can see now. Great surgeon. Should have had this earlier!”
- “Some of the littlest efforts are a big deal. The anesthesiologist twice touched the top of my head just as I was going under. I know it sounds small, but the feeling it gave me was one of security and safety.”
- “Dr. Quillian did an amazing job transitioning to teen-appropriate care. Made my daughter think she was cool and approachable. Very thankful that if she ever needs to discuss something private, the foundation for feeling like this is a safe place is already being established. Also, spoke to her with respect, nothing kid-ish or condescending — and she commented on that after. Masterfully done by Dr. Q.”
Thanks to all our team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care.

'Patient, Kind, and Understanding' | Kudos for Our UVA Health Colleagues
To provide the best possible service and care for our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their recent healthcare experience. Below is a small selection of recent feedback praising our outstanding team members:
- “I have to give a huge shoutout to the guy who did my son's EEG. He was super helpful in keeping my son comfortable and calm throughout the test and ensuring I understood what he was doing. Super friendly and just a very good experience. I can't remember his name, but I am sure you all can figure it out to let him know he's doing a great job!”
- “Jess always listens to my concerns with care and compassion. She is always friendly and professional. When changes need to be made, she gives clear and thoughtful explanations. When changes should not be made, she explains why. She always makes me feel better and alleviates my worries. I have complete confidence in her.”
- “My son was very impressed and encouraged by his visit with Dr. Dacus. [My son], unsolicited, reported that ‘Dr. Dacus was awesome!’ I think he appreciated the care and respect he was shown as a child; that his concerns weren't minimized. He felt he could relate well to his provider.”
- “Nurses Kiersten, Ashley, and Brooke were absolutely amazing! I don't know what I would have done without them. They were so patient, kind, and understanding. Kiersten listened to my concerns and spoke up for me when I didn't have a voice (from being in so much pain). Ashley was the best labor and delivery nurse. She was so excited for me and did everything she could to make me comfortable. Brooke was my recovery nurse, and she helped me during my most vulnerable moments after birth. I'm so thankful I had her during the first two days, because she checked on me often and helped me learn how to care for myself and my baby. I'm so thankful for these ladies!”
Thanks to all our team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care.

W. Jeffrey Elias, MD, Named to Modern Healthcare’s 2024 Innovators List
UVA Health neurosurgeon W. Jeffrey Elias, MD, has been recognized by Modern Healthcare, a leading healthcare publication, as one of its Innovators for 2024 for his pioneering work in the field of focused ultrasound.
Dr. Elias is being honored for his groundbreaking work with focused ultrasound technology that can replace a surgeon’s scalpels with focused sound waves. Instead of requiring a neurosurgeon to cut into a patient’s skull, the technology can focus sound waves deep inside a patient’s brain to disrupt faulty brain circuits. Elias’ pioneering research helped pave the way for the federal Food and Drug Administration to approve the minimally invasive technology as a new treatment option both for essential tremor, a common movement disorder, and for Parkinson’s disease symptoms.
Please join us in congratulating Dr. Elias on this outstanding recognition. Read more on Connect.

Two-Step Verification for MyChart Users
Monday, April 8 | In keeping with our steadfast commitment to protect patient data, and at the recommendation of the MyChart Steering Committee, we will turn on two-step verification for all UVA Health MyChart accounts across all entities.
Robin Parkin, CPHIMS, CHCIO, Chief Information and Technology Office, said, “Two-step verification (also called two-factor authentication) is a security protocol that uses a secondary means (email or text) to verify a patient’s identity when logging in to MyChart. When this feature is turned on, it adds a quick step to the login process to help make sure the user is who they say they are.
“Using two-step verification to protect online accounts is a common practice among healthcare and other organizations that deal with secure information and is likely something that most patients have encountered previously. Currently, it is an optional security feature for UVA Health MyChart accounts. Starting April 8, users will need to opt-out if they do not wish to use two-step verification.
“Patients will see an announcement message about the change when they log in to their MyChart account. The MyChart Help Desk number (which is staffed 24/7) will be featured on the login page to support patients who have trouble accessing their account. Frequently asked questions will also be available on uvahealth.com.”
Thank you for your support of our ongoing work to strengthen our Health Information Technology foundation in service of patients and team members. If you have questions about this change, please contact Robin Parkin or Mike Navetta, Administrator, HIT Applications.

'I Don't Ever Complete These Surveys, But …' | Kudos for Our UVA Health Colleagues
To provide the best possible service and care for our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their recent healthcare experience. Below is a small selection of recent feedback praising our outstanding team members:
- “One particular nurse that tended to me was absolutely incredible. His name was Jakob Minter. He drew my blood for all the tests. It was the best experience I have ever had drawing blood. He took his time to check both arms to see which one was better. Typically when I have blood drawn, it is very painful because the tech needs to get the test done quickly. Jacob took his time, found the vein he was looking for, and honestly, I felt nothing. Not even a pinch! All I can say is wow! He is truly someone special.”
- “A huge thanks to Tyler at the check-in desk; Cia, who prepped me and let me ask a million questions about being nervous and put me at ease; and especially Mary, my PACU nurse, who advocated for me to make sure the doctor saw me before I left, helped me cope with my pain, nausea, and general coming-out-of-anesthesia fog. Truly, Mary made the experience as comfortable as possible.”
- “I don't ever complete these surveys, but I felt compelled to do this one because of the good experience I got. Having to go to the hospital for anything can be very stressful — nervous, not knowing a lot of the unknowns. But I wanted to give a full shoutout to Chelsea Cooper, who was one of my RNs, and Caroline Mastrangelo. They were nothing but sweet, and had the biggest smile on their faces. You could tell they were passionate about their jobs. They went above and beyond to make sure I felt comfortable by making sure I had a warm blanket, tissues, water — and they also just listened to my concerns. Lastly, they made sure I had snacks for after my tilt-table test. They both had a calm tone and explained everything perfectly to me.”
- “Anne was my nurse on 5 South. I have spent a good time of my life in the hospital and have always been under the care of medical professionals, since I have a lifelong condition. The level of care I received from her will always stand out to me as being top-notch. She was an incredible nurse and I think she deserves recognition for her skills. I was not expecting the level of care I received from your hospital and staff, and I am truly thankful and feel blessed that I received the transplant from y'all. You are an amazing hospital and have top-notch care.”
Thanks to all our team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care.

Ramadan began on the evening of Sunday, March 10, and ends at sundown on Tuesday, April 9. If so, it would be prudent to discuss a medication plan with them to ensure optimal medical care while they observe this holy month. Read more on Connect.

Education Builds Hope
Did you know UVA Health is one of only three hospital systems in Virginia that offers a Hospital Education Program (HEP)? Since the late 1970s, the team — teachers, educational consultants, instructional assistants, media specialist/librarian, administrative technicians, and volunteers — has been providing educational services to our youngest patients, ages 2 to 22.
“We gain a lot of strength from our families,” says Principal Eric D. Johnson. “And the procedures some of the medical staff do these days to change or save young lives are amazing! We learn from the children themselves, too — with all of the obstacles they’re facing, their resiliency gives us hope. And in turn, we believe education builds their hope.”HEP collaborates with many UVA Health team members. “Our HEP teachers are the glue that keeps our kids connected to their schools while in the hospital or coming to the clinic frequently,” says William Petersen, MD, MBA, Associate Chief Medical Officer, UVA Health Children’s. “Many of our patients say our teachers are their favorite hospital staff members, and wish they could continue to be taught by them even after discharge from the hospital!” Read more in Connect’s Hope at Work series.
