Appreciation
‘Sunny, Kind, and Loving’ | Kudos for Our UVA Health Colleagues
To provide the best possible service and care for our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their recent healthcare experience. Below is a small selection of recent feedback praising our outstanding team members:
- “It was mind boggling how well this facility operates. I was incredibly impressed by the lack of wait times and the professionalism of the staff. I have mentioned this to at least ten people that I have met.”
- “I got to witness two different teaching moments for a resident and was impressed by the kindness, patience, and thoroughness of the staff.”
- “We are always sure to complete these surveys when our daughter sees Dr. Wall. We are always blown away by how amazing she is. Our daughter is always excited to go to the doctor when she knows it's to see Dr. Wall. She displays immense patience while our daughter asks a million questions, taps on her keyboard, etc. She talks about Dr. Wall randomly at home. She absolutely adores her. We always feel heard and leave feeling better after visits with Dr. Wall. She Is so knowledgeable and understands our daughter's condition. We cannot say enough great things about Dr. Wall.”
- “Your front desk personnel are very sunny, kind, and loving. I also overheard/observed a lot of kind rapport among staff members and their loving expressions to one another. And it was all very genuine (not like on show, they were just interacting with one another), but I thought it demonstrated a lot of joy in working there and meaningful camaraderie that I think shows job satisfaction that must transfer over to their approach to patients.”
Thanks to all our team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care.

Video Series | Research in Motion
Have you been keeping up with the weekly video series Research in Motion? In it, researchers are asked three questions: What do you do? What do you love about your research? How will it impact human health? If you haven’t seen the latest, here they are:
- Bon Q. Trinh, PhD (pictured) | "My group employs experimental and computational approaches to understand how biomolecules regulate gene expression at the chromatin level during normal blood cell development and cancer."
- Harald Sontheimer, PhD | "I study glial cells called astrocytes, the brain support cells that provide nourishment to neurons that regulate blood flow in the brain and help to form a protective barrier that prevents pathogens and toxic molecules from entering the brain."
- Kari Ring, MD | "The world of cancer genetics has exploded in the last decade and we have learned so much about ways to help prevent cancer. I help develop screening protocols for patients, as well as risk reduction options to help prevent cancer."
- Chuanxi Cai, PhD | "The research in my lab is mainly focused on the biology of MG53. As a regenerative medicine, it plays important roles in tissue repair and anti-inflammation in stress induced heart failure, as well as functioning as a tumor suppressor."
Thank you to these researchers — and all our colleagues who advance medical knowledge — for conducting research that shapes the medicine we deliver tomorrow, and how we deliver it.

PACS System Update
Please see below for the latest update on the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) issues:
- The Health Information Technology (HIT) team and clinical stakeholders have spent the last three weeks working daily with our Philips PACS vendor to diagnose and resolve the instability issues we have been experiencing.
- The changes we have implemented have not resolved the instability and the system’s ability to function consistently remains a challenge.
- The next steps being taken to resolve the issue include adding servers to increase capacity and implementing a customized system upgrade from Philips.
- HIT and Philips will maintain heightened monitoring and elevated response throughout the holidays. For those working next week, rest assured that a team will be available to restore the system should it go down.
- More information about next steps for resolving this issue will be shared in the coming days.
- Support:
- For questions, please contact the HIT Help Desk at 434.924.5334.
- For unanticipated PACS downtimes, providers may call 4-XRAY (4-9729) to speak with a radiologist for interpretations of critical images (ED or ICU, trauma patients, etc.).

‘Kind, Considerate, and Respectful’ | Kudos for Our UVA Health Colleagues
To provide the best possible service and care for our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their recent healthcare experience. Below is a small selection of recent feedback praising our outstanding team members:
- “Abigail Kerns was exceptional with my child. She was super nice and caring to him, while also making sure as the mother of a sick child that I was fine as well.”
- “The surgeon (Dr. Dowling) and his entire support team performed impeccably in their efforts related to my serious (melanoma) surgery and my personal needs. As a retired UVA Health employee for over two decades, I can attest that everyone involved in this entire process — from discovery of the problem through before, during, and after the surgical procedure — met the very highest standards I could have hoped for.”
- “Everyone that came in contact with my daughter was kind, considerate, and respectful of her needs. The PACU team was beyond incredible. They were on top of everything and didn't second guess me (as mom) with my concerns. One nurse in particular in the PACU, Sarah Strauss, made our pre-post-op experience so much better. She deserves an award for her kindness, gentleness, and overall care she provided my daughter.”
- “Vinay has changed my life. I am an amputee that was sent there to improve my mobility for weight loss surgery. I have since lost 70 pounds and improved my physical mobility in so many ways. Vinay is an amazing therapist. I can't begin to describe how lucky I am to have him.”
Thanks to all our team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care.

“Through numerous letters and emails we receive throughout the year, our patients also share a deep appreciation for the extraordinary care and compassion you provide each and every day. We hope you enjoy this video that allows us to share one letter among many that illustrates how our teams come together to transform health and inspire hope for all Virginians and beyond.”
“Thank you for all that you do. Our heartfelt wishes to you and your families for a joyful and peaceful holiday season.”

Operational Updates: Influenza Is on the Rise
Over the last several weeks, we have seen increasing levels of influenza across our operating areas, accounting for approximately 3.4% of all clinic visits. Given this heightened activity, and our goals to create a safe environment in which to deliver and receive care, we are now requiring all non-vaccinated employees (clinical and non-clinical) to mask for any significant patient contact until further notice. Significant patient contact is defined as any contact greater than 1 minute within 6 feet of the patient, which could occur anywhere within the Medical Center (inclusive of both in-patient and out-patient facilities) and is not limited to contact while providing care (e.g., in the cafeterias, in an elevator, etc.).
In addition, for those team members providing direct care to our patients, please review this guidance — sent via email on Wednesday, Dec. 20, and posted on Connect — to ensure consistent care delivery across our operations.

Shout Out to Our Researchers!
While many at UVA Health deliver care to our patients or educate students about the delivery of such care, our colleagues conducting research shape the medicine we deliver tomorrow — and how we deliver it. Recent examples include:
- Safer Medications | Sophisticated computer models of the male and female liver developed by Jason Papin, PhD (pictured); PhD student Connor Moore; and Christopher Holstege, MD, will help ensure new medications arrive without unwanted side effects.
- New Drug-Screening Tool | A powerful new drug-screening tool created by Jeffrey J. Saucerman, PhD, and graduate student Taylor G. Eggertsen has identified the chemotherapy drug midostaurin as a potential new treatment for heart failure.
- Preventing Coronary Artery Disease | Doctors may be able to slow or halt coronary artery disease by using drugs or possibly even nutritional supplements to target genes recently identified by an international team that included UVA’s Clint L. Miller, PhD.
- Precision Nutrition | UVA researchers led by Ani W. Manichaikul, PhD, have moved us closer to “precision nutrition” by revealing how African-American and Hispanic-American people’s genes influence their ability to use healthy Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids.
- Improving Cancer Care | Cancer Center researchers Philip I. Chow, PhD; Dan Gioeli, PhD; and their collaborators are harnessing the potential of wearable devices such as smartwatches to tailor treatments and improve patient outcomes.
This is only a sampling of the research that occurs here daily. (More can be found in the UVA Health Newsroom.) We’re grateful to these team members and to all who expand our knowledge of medical science. Thank you, researchers!

‘Top-Notch Care’ | Kudos for Our UVA Health Colleagues
To provide the best possible service and care for our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their recent healthcare experience. Below is a small selection of recent feedback praising our outstanding team members:
- “The nurses who checked in on us were unbelievable! I would like to hug the main nurse who helped us and thank her again in person. The one sweet nurse took such good care of my child; she brought me to tears. She made me so comfortable! Thank you!”
- “I am so pleased with every aspect of my very first visit to UVA hospital. I have frequently spoken of the cleanliness and the nursing staff. They helped me by talking and joking (when appropriate). It was worth my three-hour drive and motel expenses. My procedure was a success and I am currently getting used to the new me! Thank you to the facility and staff for all the assistance I received.”
- “The whole team — from the front desk to the EKG tech to the nurse — everyone was amazing. I loved how all the team members had smiles on their faces and were laughing with each other. Very friendly environment; honestly, it kept me at ease and peace. Amazing team.”
- “The nurse assistant was amazing during my toenail removal! She talked me through the injections as I squeezed her hand so tightly into my chest. Her care, compassion, and sense of humor was the best I have ever experienced. I am beyond impressed with the skill set, empathy, care, and compassion of the medical assistant, ortho tech, provider, and facility. Top-notch care!”
Thanks to all our team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care.

Painless Move at Fontaine
UVA Health’s Pain Management Center hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Dec. 11 to celebrate the first day of seeing patients move to their new space on the first floor of Fontaine Building 545. The move from the third floor facilitates the center’s expansion and will allow the team to double procedure volume. Other anticipated benefits include improved patient access and increased efficiency.
This move was no small feat! Catherine Cash, Ambulatory Director, Surgical Specialties, led the endeavor and reflects, “It took an entire team across the organization to help bring this to fruition. There are lots of moving pieces and parts that must be considered and planned for.”
Many thanks to the Pain Management Center clinical staff and providers, Musculoskeletal Access, and Facilities Management teams who helped make this move possible. Notes Cash, “The move represents a strategic step in the growth and enhancement of the Pain Management Center's capabilities. The expansion aligns with the organization's commitment to providing high-quality patient care and improving overall operational efficiency.”

Going Clear
Congratulations to UVA Health Orthopedic Center Ivy Road (OCIR) on earning a nationwide 2023 Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) Go Clear™ Award and being named as a Center of Excellence in Surgical Safety: Smoke Evacuation.
AORN reports surgical smoke is a hazardous byproduct of any surgery involving a laser or an electrosurgical unit. The program was developed to help perioperative teams improve safety efforts and protect team members and patients.
"All it takes is one person to notice an area for improvement, but it takes an entire team to make a change. By eliminating all the surgical smoke at OCIR, we have created an environment that’s not only safer for our patients, but for all our OR [Operating Room] team members. This exemplifies the team atmosphere we have here at OCIR!" says Megan McDonald, RN, BSN, CCRN, who led the efforts.
Thank you, OCIR, for striving every day to support our strategic plan goals of patient safety and making it easier for our teams to provide care.

UVA Breaks Ground on $350 Million Paul and Diane Manning Institute of Biotechnology
UVA broke ground today, Dec.8, on the Paul and Diane Manning Institute of Biotechnology, a historic milestone for the University that will propel it to the forefront of cutting-edge medicine, fast track the development of new treatments and cures and transform how healthcare is delivered across the state and beyond.
The new institute is made possible, in large part, by a generous $100 million donation from philanthropists Paul and Diane Manning, after whom the institute is named. It also represents a major investment by UVA and state leaders who recognize the institute’s potential to tackle some of the greatest challenges in medicine while driving economic growth for the entire Commonwealth.
Officials estimate the institute will generate hundreds of jobs directly and potentially thousands indirectly by drawing biotech and pharmaceutical companies to a new “ecosystem of innovation” surrounding the state-of-the-art, 350,000-square-foot facility in Fontaine Research Park. New Epic Health Maintenance Plan for Adult Tetanus Vaccination
On Dec. 5, a new health maintenance (HM) plan for tetanus immunization in adult patients was implemented in Epic. All adult patients 21 and older are automatically enrolled, though these reminders will not display for the patient in MyChart. This plan assumes these patients are up to date on their childhood vaccines for diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (DTP). Consistent with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations, the HM plan requires the initial immunization be Tdap, followed by Td or Tdap every 10 years.

‘A Better Place Because of You’
Kevin Fox, Facilities and Planning and Capital Development Director, recently delivered his version of a classic poem to team member Gloria Smith, who’s retiring today, Dec. 8, after working at UVA Health for more than 43 years — 18 years of them as a facilities planner:
“‘Twas the week before retirement and all through the house, not a recliner was out of place, not even on 6 South.
The cubicle curtains were all hung with the utmost of care, in hopes that our patients would soon be there. Those patients were all nestled asleep in their beds, with visions of flowers and music still lingering in their heads.
Gloria with her cart and me on the phone, had just realized we were left on the loading dock all alone. When suddenly there arose such a loud noise, why it was Hubba [Warren Wood, Jr., Projects Services Superintendent] and a few of his merry boys.
We all flew like a flash to the delivery truck with haste, to outfit the waiting room with style and taste. The orders flew one after the other, until Gloria and Hubba couldn’t look at each other.
The chairs and sofas were all placed with the utmost care, in hopes that the CEO would soon be there. With the room all done and looking sublime, it was Gloria’s well-deserved retirement time.
I shouted to her as she rode out of sight, UVA Health is a better place because of you, and we all wished her a good night!”
Smith’s retirement plans are to “Do Gloria!” — aka “Do whatever I want to, or not.” Advice to incoming UVA Health team members: “Find what makes you happy and develop a great relationship with your teammates. This is a good place to work!” (Photo, from left, Kevin Fox, Gloria Smith, and Michael Payne, Facilities Planning and Capital Development Manager.)
‘Amazing and Miraculous Experience’ | Kudos for Our UVA Health Colleagues
To provide the best possible service and care for our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their recent healthcare experience. Below is a small selection of recent feedback praising our outstanding team members:
- “Dr. Chhabra and his entire team were outstanding and well worth the 8 1/2-hour drive to get my procedure done at UVA Health.”
- “I have been coming to UVA Health for cardiology since I was 9 weeks old (I am now 50) and will continue to be a patient. Their care has been outstanding from the beginning.”
- “There is no rating high enough for the helpfulness of the person at the registration desk. Her kindness and service is life-changing. Our child was finally called by the correct legal name, and we now know the next time we visit UVA Health, we will not have to deal with the trauma and risk associated with her birth name. We cannot put into words how much we appreciate her help, competency, and understanding. She was also awesome with the regular check-in process and we love the waiting area!”
- “It was an amazing and miraculous experience. Each member of the team made us feel like they personally cared for and loved and respected us. We felt confident in the care we received, and never felt alone or like we were a burden in dealing with things. Keep up the amazing work!”
Thanks to all our team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care.

Need a Pick Me Up?
Stop by and see the “Celebrate Around the World” tree — featuring flags from many countries — on the second floor of the University Hospital lobby.
Gloria Smith, Facilities Planner, First Impressions, says, “With everything that is going on in the world today, this tree reminds us that we all have something to celebrate, even if we celebrate differently. We may be different but, here at UVA Health, we are all one family — and we need to celebrate that every day!”
Gloria adds that the response to the tree has been universally positive, from team members and patients alike. “While decorating the tree with flags, a team member from Afghanistan stopped by and was excited that we had included a flag from his country.”
Thank you to Gloria, and Randal Johnson, Greeter, Patient and Guest Services, for the lovely idea and beautiful tree!

All Devices Running Office 2016 to Be Automatically Upgraded
All UVA Health devices running Microsoft Office 2016 are being upgraded to Office 2021. The upgrades will take place automatically on a rolling schedule based on PC number through spring 2024, affecting approximately 17,000 devices. Here’s what you need to know about the installation:
- Most devices complete the installation within 15 minutes, but older devices and those located off Grounds may take longer.
- The automated installation will offer an option to delay up to five days.
- If you wish to control the timing of the upgrade, it’s best to initiate it manually by following the instructions on HIT’s Office 2021 help page.
- To prepare for the upgrade, ensure all Office files (e.g., .docx, .xlsx, etc.) are saved to a network location such as your home drive (F:) or other department shared drives (e.g., O:, Y;, and Z:).
Learn more about the upgrade and specific changes users will experience on HIT’s Office 2021 help page.

UVA Cancer Center Wreath Auction: Thank You From a Grateful Patient
The annual UVA Cancer Center Wreath Auction at the Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center (ECCCC) provides wreath bases to volunteer team members who, in turn, provide creatively decorated wreaths to be auctioned. Proceeds benefit cancer patients facing barriers to care, including lodging and transportation. This year’s auction ends on Dec. 6.
Barbara, a patient at UVA Health, was diagnosed in December 2018 with stage IV ovarian cancer. She finished chemotherapy treatment in June 2019 and had surgery at UVA Health to remove the tumors. She continues receiving regular care and checkups with Kari Ring, MD, Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Barbara is excited about this year’s wreath decorating and auction. “I am honored to participate this year for the first time,” she says. “UVA Health holds a very special place in my heart. It is where I received excellent care for my stage IV ovarian cancer, and I am so thankful that I am now close to five years cancer-free! I believe that my healing was a combination of the Lord and Dr. Kari Ring working together. Dr. Ring is an exceptional doctor, and I will be forever grateful for her kindness and comfort. I was scared and she gave me the confidence to push forward.”
Please join us in congratulating Barbara on being cancer-free. Special thanks go out to Dr. Ring, our colleagues in the ECCCC who care for our patients with cancer, and all who organize the annual wreath auction event — thank you!

During the downtime, team members should use an internet search engine (like Google) to search for a specific SDS. For example, if there is a problem with an infant heel warmer, search for "infant heel warmer safety data sheet." The SDS would show what actions should be taken to contain a spill or address an exposure. Team members should also refer to the Red Book in their areas.
New Dates: Scheduled Power Outages
Tuesday, Dec. 12, to March 2024 | University Hospital | An electrical upgrade will be performed intermittently during overnight shifts — starting Tuesday, Dec. 12, and ending in March — impacting power supply only to normal power receptacles and normal power lighting. These outages mostly affect University Hospital, including patient towers — it does not affect the South Tower, South Addition, or operating rooms. Affected equipment includes dietary and laundry equipment, refrigerators and freezers, copy machines, desktop computers, and pumps and fans not on emergency power. Pre-outage considerations:
- NEW — Outage dates, times, and affected areas: Check out this chart on Connect. (Note: To access Connect, you must be on a UVA Health network or using VPN.)
- Staff: Please ensure corded equipment that needs to be on emergency power is on emergency power (red or identified) receptacles.
- Department managers:
- Please alert overnight staff when receiving outage communications, which includes outage maps of areas affected.
- For corded equipment needed for patient care on normal power that cannot be without power for three to four hours: Please share this information with the Health System Physical Plant Electric (Todd Gibson) and outage coordinator (Scott Guynes) so preparations can be made.
- Facilities/outage coordinator: To avoid issues, a walk-through will be made to each area, both prior to the outage and during the first few minutes of the outage.
Questions? Contact Scott Guynes, Senior Construction Administration Manager, at 434.282.3794.
Winter Weather Safety
To keep everyone as safe as possible, please begin preparing for winter weather events. When severe enough, these events may cause us to modify our operations, alter parking locations and bus service schedules, and require some team members to remain in or near our patient care facilities after their shift ends. Learn more about winter weather preparedness on Connect.
- Report an icy patch or area that needs clearing at a UVA Health facility by calling 434.924.2267.
- Walk Like a Penguin: Keep yourself safe when traversing slippery or icy surfaces. Shane Anderson, Director of Emergency Management, advises to keep your feet under you and take small steps (like a penguin!) to avoid falling.

Appreciation
‘You Are Making a Positive Difference’ | Kudos for Our UVA Health Colleagues
UVA Health recently received a letter from grateful family members who had a positive experience with the Hospitality House (HH). In the letter, they wrote:
“This past summer, during our daughter’s prolonged stay at [UVA Health] after a major vehicle crash, we were greatly blessed by the accommodation at HH. This made it easy for my wife to stay at our daughter’s side and support her in a time of most dire need. During her stay at HH, my wife also met others who were helped while visiting their loved ones, and got to learn a little of their stories, highlighting the value of HH. You are making a positive difference in the lives of many people and helping to make difficult circumstances a little easier to deal with. So, thank you for what you do.”
Thank you to our team members who work every day to make the lives of our patients and their families a little easier. Learn more about UVA Health’s Hospitality House and other local hotel and housing accommodations.
