Updates to Observer and Mentee Processes
Important updates to the observer and mentee processes will be in effect Jan. 1. These strengthen protections for individuals under 18 years of age who participate in observational experiences within our organization. These changes support compliance with the Office of Youth Protection and ensure a safe and well-structured environment for all minor observers.
Key Updates:
- Observer and mentee agreements will now be sent to observer@uvahealth.org for processing.
- All required agreements must be completed and submitted before an observer or mentee begins their experience.
- Sponsors of minor observers should plan for at least two weeks of lead time to complete all Office of Youth Protection requirements.
- Sponsors of observers under 18 years of age are required to fulfill Youth Protection guidelines, which include:
- Completion of an online learning module, and
- A background check within the past 24 months.
- For Licensed Independent Practitioners (LIPs), the background check completed through University Medical Center credentialing or re-credentialing will fulfill this requirement.
- Volunteer Services will coordinate the registration process for minor Sponsors with the Office of Youth Protection.
- Volunteer Services also will handle the request for daily passes for all observers.
Your partnership is appreciated in implementing these updates, which help us maintain a safe and supportive environment for all learners — especially our youngest participants. Questions? Email Dani Tietgen in Volunteer Services or Tabatha Greene, Manager, Patient Experience Office.

Special Deliveries
‘Twas the morning of Christmas, when all through UVA Health Children’s seventh floor — Santa Claus and his elves were stirring, delivering gifts to some of our youngest patients, door-to-door.
Santa Claus, aka Charlottesville Mayor Juandiego Wade, has been making these rounds for about eight years. He's been accompanied by his daughter, Gabriella Wade, most of those years. And this year, more elves to help spread the cheer including UVA Health CEO Mitch Rosner, MD, MACP, FRCP, his wife, UVA Health’s Michelle Rosner, CRNA, MSN, RN.
“It’s just really special to go into the room, give the family or the young person a present, and see their face light up,” says Mayor Wade.
“Being with Santa and being able to support all the families, it truly is a wonderful experience for patients to know there are people thinking about them and caring about them. It really is a joy and a privilege to do this," says Dr. Rosner.
Adds a patient’s parent: "That was awesome to see Santa and everybody come in here and show love and support to the kids — they really appreciate that for sure, they were very excited!"

Happy, Hopeful Holidays!
From UVA Health Senior leadership: “As another year draws to a close, we pause to reflect on what truly sustains us through every accomplishment, challenge, and change — hope.
“Hope lives in the small moments, shared purpose, and quiet strength you bring to your work each day. It’s reflected in the care you provide for our patients and for one another. And it’s felt in the hallways — from Prince William to Culpeper to Charlottesville — where your compassion brings smiles, joy, and healing to those in our communities.
“This year, we asked our teams to share what gives them hope, now and into the future. Please take a moment to watch this short video (3:35), which captures some of what we hear … and reminds us that our mission together is full of hope for those we care for every day.
“As the holidays approach, we hope you find time to rest and reconnect with those you love. Thank you for inspiring us every day with the meaning and purpose you bring to your roles.” Read the message on Connect.

Medical Students Honor Anatomical Donors and Their Families at Convocation of Gratitude
Medical students devote countless hours to classroom learning as they prepare to become skilled and compassionate physicians. For second-year students, the anatomy lab marks a defining moment in their medical education. It is where learning moves beyond textbooks and 3D models to the study of the human body through anatomical donors — individuals who generously donate their bodies to science to advance medical education. This extraordinary gift gives students their first opportunity to explore the complexity, variation, and realities of human anatomy and disease, helping shape them into better physicians.
To honor these donors and their families for their profound generosity, second-year students organized a Convocation of Gratitude ceremony on Friday, Dec. 12. Six students led the planning for this year’s event: Zoe Ziff, Valeria Pabon, Melanie Weber, Basia Davis, Danielle Wilson, and Allison Horvath. Read more on Connect.

‘A Pleasant Experience’ | Kudos to Our UVA Health Colleagues
To best serve our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their healthcare experience. Below is a selection of feedback praising our team members:
- "Jessica S. was the best nurse. Her attitude, disposition, care, concerns, understanding, and everything about her was very pleasant and a great experience for the condition I was in. Thanks, Jessica. You are the best!”
- "It's been 20 years since I've been seen at UVA Health, and I am massively impressed with the efforts to make it a human experience. The nursing staff cannot be mentioned enough. Sierra, Erin, Bobby, Darva — to name a few — made this stay bearable for me. They were so kind and attentive. Dr. Smith and his neuro team were amazing and, overall, every medical professional I encountered was a pleasant experience.”
- "Dr. Alvi is by far one of the most amazing doctors I have ever seen. I quite literally feel as if he has contributed to saving my life and allowing me to have any quality of life despite my complex conditions. He listens carefully, works hard to find solutions, and elaborates well on my conditions and treatment options. ... My family is very grateful that we found him. I have no doubt that Dr. Alvi cares for his patients, and I can see that their successful treatment is what matters most to him.”
Thank you to our team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care!

Acts of Kindness
Stephen Park, MD, Chair, Department of Otolaryngology, recently brought to UVA Heath, new Chief of Head and Neck Surgery Nicole Fowler, MD, who then initiated a program to help patients in need. It began with a Thanksgiving meal. Dr. Fowler and four attendings bought ingredients, then she and her family cooked a Thanksgiving meal at her home and delivered it to a patient and their family in need identified by Carol Schenck, LCSW, Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center.
Dr. Fowler is paying it forward: "I just wanted to say how deeply appreciative I am for the way you’ve welcomed me since I arrived,” she tells her team. "I’ve felt included, supported, and truly part of this exceptional group from day one. This year, I’m especially thankful for all of you!"
She adds, "This family has endured so much. They were incredibly grateful. It means so much to me we're giving back to our patients and community in such a meaningful way!”
Says Dr. Park: “Some of the most beautiful acts of kindness are tucked between major stresses in life such as a new diagnosis of advanced cancer. Dr. Fowler, her team, and her family stepped forward in a quiet and discrete way. It’s a pleasure to shine some light on the goodness in people within our health system!”
Next up: Dr. Fowler, her family, and UVA Health team members plan to deliver presents to a family in need during the holidays. Following this, they plan to help families with school supplies for their children, removing additional burdens so they can focus on healing and being together during an already difficult time.

Appreciation
‘Communicative, Compassionate, Responsive’ | Kudos to Our UVA Health Colleagues
To best serve our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their healthcare experience. Below is a selection of feedback praising our team members:
- "I honestly cannot say enough good things about the entire staff at UVA Health. My doctors on this visit were very thorough, worked quickly and showed extreme care to ensure they were not missing a potential cause for my [condition]. The referred cardiologist also explained in great detail what the follow-up was needed for — and why — which I really appreciated. I am very grateful to have such a spectacular team to rely on at UVA Health. Thank you!”
- "I can say definitively that the surgeon, her surgical team, nurses, and technicians, were communicative, compassionate, responsive, respectful, and pleasant. No one wants to be in the hospital, but everyone at University Medical Center turned the negative of surgery into a very positive experience.”
- "The gentleman who delivered my meals, Anthony Williams, was exceptionally friendly and helpful. He definitely impacted my experience in a positive way that enhanced my mood.”
Thank you to our team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care!

U.S. News & World Report: Best Hospitals for Maternity Care
UVA Health Culpeper Medical Center and UVA Health Prince William Medical Center have earned top acknowledgments in U.S. News & World Report’s 2025-26 Best Hospitals for Maternity Care. Both medical centers received “High Performing” and “Maternity Care Access” designations, highlighting their commitment to providing superior care for communities with limited access to maternity services.
U.S. News & World Report evaluates hospitals based on data related to uncomplicated pregnancies — focusing on hospitals with high volumes of births. High-performing hospitals demonstrate lower rates of C-sections, fewer severe newborn complications, reductions in episiotomies, and higher percentages of mothers breastfeeding. The report also acknowledged the hospitals for offering valuable services such as child birthing classes, lactation consultants, Neonatal Intensive Care Units (e.g., NICU at Prince William Medical Center), immersive hydrotherapy tubs during labor, overnight partner stays, postpartum depression screenings, and more. Telehealth Tiger Team Springs to Action to Support Patient Access During Shutdown
When coverage of telehealth visits for some Medicare patients was suspended during the recent federal government shutdown, a multidisciplinary Telehealth “Tiger Team” stepped up in amazing ways to protect access for these patients and support our clinical teams.
Convened and led by Karen Rheuban, MD, Professor of Pediatrics and Director, UVA Center for Telehealth, and Julie Briski, MSPH, BSN, RN, Director, Telehealth Program — the team’s efforts serve as a model for collaboration, agility, and patient-centered problem solving across UVA Health. It also laid a foundation for any future disruptions to telehealth that uncertainty in the federal landscape may bring.
- Access Team | As they often are, Access Associates were on the frontlines as the first point of contact for our patients: rapidly revising workflows, making proactive calls to patients, and ensuring clear communication around a moving target. Their contributions to standing meetings, timely review of scheduled appointments, and outreach to nearly one thousand patients ensured everything continued to function, even during uncertainty.
- HIT / MyChart Team | In record time, they engineered an electronic Advance Beneficiary Notice (ABN) solution that preserved documentation, minimized disruption, and set the bar with our peer institutions. Innovation under pressure at its best.
- Cadence Team | This team dove into urgent build work without hesitation, turning around access workflow updates in Epic with remarkable speed. Their responsiveness made real-time decision making possible.
- Revenue Cycle | These professionals were behind-the-scenes heroes, ensuring compliance, safeguarding financial integrity, and helping teams navigate ABN requirements so our patients aren’t surprised or burdened now — or later.
- Providers | Thank you for adapting schedules, partnering closely with Access teams, and thoughtfully dispositioning telehealth appointments with our most vulnerable populations. Your flexibility is valued deeply.
- Government Relations | Lynne Boyle of UVA Health Government Relations kept her finger on the pulse of all that was happening in Washington, D.C. — from Congress to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services — providing valuable insight and counsel.
This is what integrated telehealth looks like. Not just video visits, but a coordinated effort across operations, IT, clinical teams, and revenue functions to protect quality care in uncertain circumstances. Deep appreciation to everyone who contributed ideas, answered messages, and moved fast without losing sight of patients!

Appreciation
Gratitude and Generosity
Grateful patients and families continue to give back by honoring their loved ones, appreciating their caregivers, and supporting their fellow patients. Here are recent examples of philanthropy inspired by the quality of care received at UVA Health:
- A grateful neurology patient and his wife established an endowment to support early-career scientists studying traumatic brain injuries, stem cell therapies, and Alzheimer’s disease. "Our interest in giving to the School of Medicine began with our personal experience with the superb doctors, nurses, and other caregivers at UVA.” (See "Harry Would Have Loved Lulu.")
- In appreciation for the lifesaving care he received at UVA Health’s Heart and Vascular Center, a cardiology patient is supporting new research on heart arrhythmias. (See "Right on Target.")
- A grateful spouse made a gift to support transplant education in his wife’s memory. “She inspired all of us. Her story reminds us to live life fully, and to keep pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in medicine.” (See “Grace and Purpose.”)
- A grateful patient and her spouse are funding efforts to increase access to cancer care and screening across Virginia. “We both grew up in families where we saw how fulfilling it can be to recognize the struggles of others and offer support.” (See “A Family Affair.”)
Thank you to everyone at UVA Health for inspiring the gratitude and generosity of our donors and supporters. You can learn more about how philanthropy fuels our mission at giving.uvahealth.com.

Coming Soon: Patient Safety Culture Survey
From Dec. 8 to 19, all University Medical Center and UVA Community Health team members will have the opportunity to share their thoughts about our patient safety culture, which can be described as:
- We are open about errors so that we can learn from our mistakes.
- We use a systematic problem-solving approach to develop and implement solutions to prevent re-occurrence.
- Our teams work well together.
It is important to measure our progress on a regular basis so we can determine how we are doing and where we have opportunities. Among the different measures we use to tell us how our work is impacting patients, the Patient Safety Culture survey measures how well developed our environment is for doing this important work. Hundreds of hospitals across the country participate in the same culture survey so we can look to our peers for guidance on our progress.
The survey is anonymous and will take place Dec. 8-19. You will receive a link in your email on Dec. 8 from interim University Medical Center CEO Terrie Edwards or UVA Community Health CEO Erik Shannon. If you have questions about the survey, please contact Patient_Safety@hscmail.mcc.virginia.edu (University Medical Center, GME trainees, and UVA School of Medicine clinical faculty) or UVACHPatientSafety@uvahealth.org (UVA Community Health).
Thank you for participating in this year’s survey and supporting our journey to be the safest place to work and receive care.

Appreciation
‘I Adore and Appreciate Her’ | Kudos to Our UVA Health Colleagues
To best serve our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their healthcare experience. Below is a selection of feedback praising our team members:
- "The two gentlemen who performed my intake [in the Emergency Department] when I first arrived were very caring and concerned. The lady at the desk when I was released: she wheeled me out with great care and a friendly attitude. It was Thanksgiving night, and all these people were there working and caring for patients with such a wonderful attitude.”
- “Hania Bushnaq-Aloul, AG-ACNP, is truly one of the most wonderful practitioners I have ever encountered. Hania's compassion and genuine concern pervade every interaction. I adore and appreciate her. She is knowledgeable, smart, and communicates in a way that is understandable to a lay person.”
- “My nurse on the 6th-floor neuro ICU, Paul Papadatos, took such good care of me. He made my stay comfortable and secure. Excellent bed manners and service. He should be acknowledged! UVA Health is lucky to have him!”
- “Best nurses ever! Maria, Madison, Laura, and Natalia were phenomenal! They were such great advocates for [my family member] and really helped communicate complex issues with the doctors. I hugged them, cried a lot, and really appreciated them.”
Thank you to our team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care!

Appreciation
Turkey Trot
It’s been a Charlottesville area tradition for 44 years, as thousands of runners and walkers participate in the 5K Turkey Trot — and Tiny Turkeys 1/4 Mile Dash — through Boar’s Head Resort on Thanksgiving morning.
This year, about 2,000 runners, walkers, and “Tiny Turkeys” helped raise funds for UVA Health Children’s — after interim UVA Health Children’s Chief Jason Lineen, MBA, served as guest speaker and kicked off the events.
It couldn’t happen without volunteers. Michelle Zheng, Mariah Hart, BSN, RN, and Sarah Roberts, PNP, are among those who helped with registration packet pick-up at Boar’s Head.
Zheng, a UVA School of Nursing student, volunteered because she “wanted to see one of the community's traditions firsthand.”
Hart, formerly with Maternal Fetal Medicine at the Battle Building (home to UVA Health Children’s), now works for UVA Health Heart and Vascular. “While volunteering, I appreciate the opportunity to speak with participants from past years who convey how this race has grown into a family tradition. It’s a great experience to support UVA Health Children's in a fun and uplifting environment!”
Roberts knows firsthand about the worthy cause — she’s a UVA Health Children’s pediatric nurse practitioner in pediatric surgery.
Thank you to these and all volunteers, Turkey Trotters, organizers, and all UVA Health Children’s team members who support our mission of transforming health and inspiring hope for all Virginians and beyond — on Thanksgiving and year-round!

Please return your Landauer Luxel badges as soon as possible in January so we can send to Landauer and have them read and download the dose data to our EHSA database.” Read more on Connect.

UVA Health Delivers Nationwide Socktober Record!
From Charlottesville to Northern Virginia, UVA Health kicked community support into high gear with the annual Socktober drive to collect new pairs of socks for the unhoused.
This year's goal at University Medical Center in Charlottesville: collecting 20,000 new pairs. This year's final number is double that goal: 42,311. And almost triple the 2024 University Medical Center tally of 15,780! Congratulations to the Center for Advanced Practice for coming out on top in the departmental contest!
Chadwick French, Systems Operations Controller, UVA Health and Morrison Healthcare, and Food and Nutrition Services team members delivered the socks on Nov. 24 to The Salvation Army and The Haven.
Team members also got into the spirit at UVA Health Prince William Medical Center, collecting 317 new pairs and donating them to SERVE Family Shelter. UVA Health Culpeper Medical Center team members donated 60 new pairs to Culpeper Housing and Shelter Services.
Congratulations to all team members who participated in Socktober — supporting our UVA Health strategic plan goal of cultivating healthy communities and belonging for all. See the new delivery photos and more on Connect.
