UVA Health Update | February 2026
Recognizing Outstanding Actions: ASPIRE Bonuses Are Back
We’re pleased to share that ASPIRE bonuses are available once again as a way to recognize and celebrate team members who go above and beyond in support of our patients, teams, and values.
ASPIRE bonuses are designed to acknowledge outstanding actions and behaviors that reflect our ASPIRE values — Accountability, Stewardship, Professionalism, Integrity, Respect, and Empathy. These awards highlight moments when team members make a meaningful difference through exceptional effort, initiative, or impact.
Eligible team members may be nominated by their manager, and approved awards are paid through payroll. While not every great contribution results in a bonus, ASPIRE is one important way we can say thank you to those whose actions truly stand out.
Thank you for the extraordinary work you do every day and for continuing to live our values in service to one another and the communities we care for.

Reminder: Parking at Fontaine and Riding the New Purple Line
Starting Monday, March 9 | Team members who currently park at Emmet/Ivy will be directed to park at Fontaine Parking Garage, 1055 Natural Resources Drive, and ride a dedicated shuttle to and from University Medical Center. This change provides access to a newer parking facility with greater availability while supporting a more reliable and consistent parking experience.
To support this change, we’re launching the Purple Line, a new shuttle service that consolidates existing Red and Blue lines into one route, providing direct service between Fontaine Parking Garage and University Medical Center. Once launched, the Purple Line will provide:
- Frequent bus service, with pickups every 3-5 minutes.
- Direct, reliable transportation between Fontaine and University Hospital.
- A convenient and predictable commute experience.
No additional permit is required to park at Fontaine Parking Garage. An existing Commuter permit is valid at both Fontaine Research Park (garage only) and Scott Stadium. In addition, team members who park at Fontaine Parking Garage will continue to be eligible for monthly parking reimbursement. Read more on Connect or visit the Parking and Transportation website.

Appreciation
‘Receptive, Attentive, and Measured’ | Kudos to Our UVA Health Colleagues
To best serve our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their healthcare experience. Below is a selection of feedback praising our team members:
- “Nurse Theresa was so compassionate. I believe she sensed my anxiety and sat with me 98% of the time. The other 2%, she was getting a warming blanket, pillow, and coffee. She spoke to me kindly — explaining the entire process — especially when there was a slight issue with the phlebotomy.”
- “I can’t say enough about how amazing my quality of care was. When I was at one of the lowest points of my life (physically) — and in the worst pain I have ever felt — the doctors and medical team rallied to help take care of me. The care I received was such to the extent that I was able to feel confident I would not only be OK, but that we would fix whatever was wrong with me. I'm so very thankful for the care I received.”
- “Chris was awesome — receptive, attentive, and measured — and asked very incisive diagnostic questions. I particularly liked the way he asked, ‘What are your goals for this visit?’ That made it very clear that — while he was working to get to the root cause of what's going on with my [health issues] — he also recognized the importance of treating my immediate needs (being out of pain).”
Thank you to our team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care!

Temporary Unit Relocation: 5 South and 3 East
Effective Thursday, March 5 | University Medical Center will swap the locations of units 5 South (currently Transplant) and 3 East (currently general medicine). This proactive move protects our transplant patients from environmental disruptions caused by the South Tower expansion construction occurring on floors 5 and 6.
The Move at a Glance:
- Transplant Services: Relocating to 3 East (to minimize noise/dust exposure).
- General Medicine: Relocating to 5 South.
- Duration: Temporary through November 2026 (pending project progress). Once the project concludes, units will transition back to their original locations.
To ensure safety during construction, bed availability on 5 South will be limited over the coming months, with portions of the unit closed periodically as work progresses. For additional information on this move, including a brief FAQ, please reference our story on Connect.
Thank you for your cooperation in prioritizing safe, high-quality patient care. Further updates will be provided as needed leading up to the transition.

Medical Care During Ramadan

One of the fundamental principles in observing this holy month for followers of Islam is fasting during daylight, which includes not taking oral medications. Please be aware of this custom and ask patients if they will be observing Ramadan. If so, it would be prudent to discuss a medication plan with them to ensure optimal medical care while they observe this holy month. Read more on Connect.

Teamwork and Trust: Enhanced Communication Between Nurses and Technicians Improves Cardiac Monitoring Across UVA Health
Keeping patients with cardiac arrhythmias safe is a team effort. At UVA Health, part of that team is about a dozen miles north of University Medical Center, at the Central Cardiac Monitoring Unit (CCMU) in North Fork Research Park. From there, CCMU technicians monitor patients who require cardiac monitoring, pulse oximetry, and capnography. They support patients in the Emergency Department (ED), certain surgical admission areas, Cardiac Transition Unit, and both adult and pediatric acute and intermediate care units.
CCMU technicians are specially trained and certified in rhythm interpretation and monitoring, making them experts in cardiac monitoring systems. But patient safety, a key initiative of our UVA Health strategic plan and nursing strategic plan, is about more than just technical skill. It depends on strong teamwork between CCMU technicians and bedside nurses — built on clear communication, shared understanding, and mutual respect. Read more on Connect.

Have you been keeping up with this weekly series? Researchers answer three questions: What do you do? What do you love about your research? How will it impact human health? View the latest:
- Kara Wiseman, PhD, MPH | "My research is focused on the development and evaluation of scalable health behavior change interventions, primarily focused on smoking cessation and alcohol use."
- Ian Wenker, PhD | "A big focus of [our] lab is trying to understand how the brain contributes to what’s called sudden unexpected death in epilepsy. People with epilepsy — unfortunately some fraction of them — will experience this where they’re found deceased and we don’t understand yet why."
- Kelly Shaffer, PhD | "In our center, we build internet-delivered programs that bring mental health to scale, and my work in particular focuses on helping cancer survivors and family caregivers with things like sleep, stress, and sexual health."
- Adam Goldfarb, MD | "My research focuses on the development of cells in the bone marrow that lead to the production of red blood cells and platelets."

‘Knowledgeable, Warm, Personable’ | Kudos to Our UVA Health Colleagues
To best serve our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their healthcare experience. Below is a selection of feedback praising our team members:
- “Wesley was full of knowledge and insight on my issues. He was patient and kind. I was having an extremely difficult day, but he was so helpful and understanding. I've dealt with braces and casts for 30-plus years in different locations [out of state] and he is by far the best I've encountered.
- "Dr. Bryer is an exceptional care provider and also an amazing leader among the UVA Health medical staff. Knowing that her nurse was tied up in a meeting that was running late, Dr. Bryer simply came out to the waiting area herself to retrieve me and take me back to the exam room. She is incredibly knowledgeable, warm, personable, and exceptionally thorough. I wish all care providers were like Dr. Bryer.”
- "I couldn't be happier with Dr. Le. He was able to address a problem that several other very fine dermatologists could not. He inspires great confidence with his extraordinarily positive outlook. His combination of world-class training and experience, comprehensive knowledge of treatments that may elude other experts, genuine care and compassion for his patients, and positive outlook make for truly outstanding care. UVA Health is fortunate to have him as head of the department.”
Thank you to our team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care!

‘Undaunted’: UVA Health Nursing Advocacy Initiative Goes to Richmond for Second Annual Advocacy Day
UVA Health Nursing Advocacy Initiative (NAI) held its second annual Advocacy Day on Jan. 29 at the Virginia General Assembly in Richmond. Every nurse who participated is an NAI Nurse Ambassador — a UVA Health professional nurse who has completed an in-person, NAI training session covering topics including the state legislature and legislators, nonpartisan advocacy communications, and coalition building strategies.
NAI didn't let anything stand in its way. "We were delighted (and frankly, relieved) to hold our Advocacy Day — even though the snow and ice shut down roads, schools, and created other logistical hurdles for all our Nurse Ambassadors who attended," recalls Leanne Fox, MPP, Nursing Governance Coordinator, Nursing Professional Governance Office. "We knew other organizations had to cancel their Advocacy Days earlier in the week, so we were glad ours was a 'Go!' NAI nurses arrived — undaunted — at pickup sites for the bus before 6 a.m., despite the ice and freezing temps." Read the full story on Connect.

‘Pleasant, Caring Demeanor of the Entire Staff’ | Kudos to Our UVA Health Colleagues
To best serve our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their healthcare experience. Below is a selection of feedback praising our team members:
- "The pleasant, caring demeanor of the entire staff was commendable, especially since an unexpected complication occurred at the end of a routine surgical procedure. In all my years of medical treatment, the genuine attention given to me as an individual patient was noticed and appreciated beyond measure. Thank you!”
- "I had a nice gentleman meet me while I was dropping my mom off out front for a wheelchair — and he offered to bring my mom to her appointment/registration for me while I parked. It was a very nice gesture. I wish I would've gotten his name, but it all happened so fast.”
- "My visit with Anna Parrish, PA, was excellent. Not only did she take time to hear my concerns, but she asked pertinent questions to reveal possible causes or outcomes of medical issues plaguing me. At no time, did I feel rushed or insignificant. She is a great listener who responds with knowledge and concern for you as her patient. She also followed up with pharmacist on a question regarding a non-formulary product via MyChart. I would heartily recommend Anna Parrish to any patient seeking competent and compassionate care.”
Thank you to our team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care!

UVA Health Recognized as an ALL IN Wellbeing First Champion
Thanks to the work of the UVA Health Office of Team Wellbeing and the Clinical Staff Credentialing Office, the Dr. Lorna Breen Heroes’ Foundation recognizes UVA Health as an ALL IN Wellbeing First Champion, meaning our credentialing applications are free from overly broad and invasive mental health questions.
Like everyone, health workers deserve the right to pursue mental healthcare without fear of losing their job. However, overly invasive mental health questions in licensing and credentialing applications prevent health workers from seeking support and increase the risk of suicide. Such questioning tends to be broad or stigmatizing, such as asking about past mental healthcare and treatment, which has no bearing on a health worker’s ability to provide care and violates the Americans with Disabilities Act. Ensuring that health workers can access mental healthcare when needed not only benefits their wellbeing, but it also improves the health of our entire country.
Thank you to all who had a hand in protecting our healthcare workers’ wellbeing through such transparent and measurable action. Learn more.

‘So Kind and Comforting’ | Kudos to Our UVA Health Colleagues
To best serve our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their healthcare experience. Below is a selection of feedback praising our team members:
- "The nurses who accompanied me to the operating room were so kind and comforting. To give that amount of kindness and care that is not necessary is such a beautiful thing; especially, the nurse who comforted me and rubbed my leg as they administered the anesthesia. Thank you. It does not go unnoticed.”
- "I was scared for weeks about this MRI, but when I got there — and saw Lillianna's smiling face when I registered, then Dan and Carmen's wonderful care of me before, during, and after the procedure — I'm not afraid of having an MRI anymore. They are the best! Thank you all for taking care of me!”
- "Dr. Hughes was born to be a pediatric dentist for children with sensory needs! He was gentle, patient, and caring toward my [child]. We are so grateful he came to UVA Health.”
Thank you to our team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care!

Shout Out to Our Researchers!
While many at UVA Health deliver care to our patients or educate students about the delivery of such care, our colleagues conducting research shape the medicine we deliver tomorrow — and how we deliver it. Examples:
- Understanding Alzheimer’s | Researchers led by UVA’s Ukpong Eyo, PhD (pictured), revealed how and why ailing immune cells called microglia may be contributing to Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and other neurological disorders. The findings could open the door to new approaches to treating those conditions.
- Stopping Sepsis | UVA Health’s Jianjie Ma, PhD, and colleagues developed a monoclonal antibody to stop sepsis, a deadly full-body infection. Their research indicates that the antibody also has the potential to treat a broad array of other inflammatory conditions, including autoimmune disorders.
- AI to Battle Brain Cancer | UVA’s Bijoy Kundu, PhD, and collaborators are developing an artificial-intelligence imaging approach to distinguish between glioblastoma progression and brain changes caused by tumor treatment. It now can take months to make that distinction, leaving doctors uncertain if the tumor is growing and stalling important care decisions.
- Drug for POTS | Antonio Abbate, MD, PhD, and colleagues at UVA Health and Virginia Commonwealth University identified a drug to provide lasting relief for Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, a condition that causes heart racing associated with dizziness when standing, among other symptoms. The findings also provide insights into the underlying causes of the syndrome.
This is only a sampling of the research that occurs here daily. (More can be found in the UVA Health Newsroom.) We’re grateful to these team members and to all who expand our knowledge of medical science. Thank you, researchers!

The blocking initiative will roll out in phases, starting with a pilot for inpatient room PCs which began on Jan. 27, and expanding to other areas starting in March. Instead of USB devices, team members should use their Microsoft OneDrive cloud storage account for secure data storage. To learn more about the USB blocking initiative, including a project timeline and FAQs, visit Connect.

See graduation photos and read more on Connect about the program and the first cohort: Rebecca Waje, Ajmal Ghafari, and Allison Loya. Congratulations!
