UVA Health Update | July 2024
UVA Health Completes Purchase of Piedmont Family Practice
UVA Health has completed the purchase of Piedmont Family Practice, effective July 31, 2024. Today, we will welcome 86 new team members to the UVA Health team, resulting in substantial growth of the number of UVA Community Health Medical Group primary care providers.
The practice team members and providers are now part of UVA Community Health Medical Group. The practice will begin seeing patients as a UVA Health entity today.
Until the fall, the UVA Health Piedmont Warrenton practices will remain on their existing electronic medical record platform. Work is underway to integrate the practice with the UVA Health instance of Epic EMR this fall. For details, visit Connect.

Coming Aug. 13: New Emergency Dept. Referral Process
The process for referring patients to the University Hospital Emergency Department (ED) will change on Tuesday, Aug. 13, when the ED Clinic/Home Transfer order will be replaced by Expected ED Admission Activity in Epic.
The ED Clinic/Home Transfer process historically has been completed via an Epic order that is not user friendly, makes tracking patients difficult for the ED, and includes outdated manual elements. The new process will remain Epic-based, leveraging the Epic-recommended Expected ED Admission Activity workflow. Using this workflow will help ensure that there is a reliable, user-friendly, and consistent process for documenting and locating ED transfer patient information in Epic so that the ED care team is best positioned to support the referred patient. Learn more on the ED intranet page.

Shout Out to Our Researchers!
While many at UVA Health deliver care to our patients or educate students about the delivery of such care, our colleagues conducting research shape the medicine we deliver tomorrow — and how we deliver it. Recent examples:
- Long-Haul COVID Risk | Catherine A. Bonham, MD (pictured), and colleagues have discovered a potential way to predict which patients with severe COVID-19 are likely to suffer “long-haul” lung problems. That could help doctors better personalize treatments for patients.
- COVID Antibody Answers | An antibody discovery by Steven L. Zeichner, MD, PhD, and his team offers a potential explanation for some of the most perplexing mysteries of COVID-19 and long COVID. The surprise findings could lead to new treatments for COVID, long COVID, and possibly other viruses.
- Sparing Patients Surgeries | Lian-Wang Guo, PhD, and K. Craig Kent, MD, are pioneering a technique to “paint” nanoparticles on transplanted veins to prevent the veins from becoming clogged. This could save heart and dialysis patients from the need for multiple surgeries — and the U.S. healthcare system billions in costs each year.
- Battling Diarrheal Diseases | Josh M. Colston, PhD, and collaborators have been developing an online dashboard to advance the global battle against deadly childhood diarrheal diseases by identifying transmission hotspots and accelerating the deployment of treatments and vaccines.
- Unsafe Sleep Practices | Multiple unsafe sleep practices were at play in more than three-quarters of Sudden Unexpected Infant Deaths analyzed by Fern Hauck, MD, MS, and colleagues. The findings underscore the need for more comprehensive safe-sleep education for new parents, including from healthcare providers.
This is only a sampling of the research that occurs here daily. (More can be found in the UVA Health Newsroom.) We’re grateful to these team members and to all who expand our knowledge of medical science. Thank you, researchers!

‘Educational Mission Milestone!’
Congratulations to UVA Health University Medical Center’s Graduate Medical Education (GME) training programs, which have received the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)’s Institutional Letter of Notification — earning Continued Accreditation status with zero citations and zero areas for improvement.
“This is really a remarkable accomplishment given the size of our GME enterprise and recent leadership changes, and is a credit to the outstanding work of our dedicated program directors and coordinators, GME office staff, Brad Kesser, MD [former interim Designated Institutional Officer], and Susan Kirk, MD [now retired], as well as UVA Health leadership’s support of our GME programs,” says Monica Lawrence, MD, Designated Institutional Official, UVA Health, and Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education, UVA School of Medicine.
The programs offer training to more than 800 residents and fellows in 84 ACGME-accredited specialties and subspecialties.
UVA School of Medicine Dean Melina Kibbe, MD, hails the program as one of the strongest in the nation, attracting a large number of highly competitive applicants. “This flawless accreditation is a testament to the dedication of our department chairs, attending faculty, GME staff, and our current trainees who provide a climate for learning that has remained a vital and unique part of the program. I’m so pleased to be part of a teaching program with a long tradition of developing physicians of the highest caliber who excel in all aspects of patient care and research.”
“An educational mission milestone!” touts CEO Wendy Horton, MBA, PharmD, FACHE, UVA Health University Medical Center. “Fantastic news! Achieving this was no small feat, and I know the hard work that went into it. A big congratulations to the entire team!”

This year UVA Health University Medical Center ranked high-performing in four clinical specialties, as well as in 12 out of 20 eligible clinical conditions and procedures. Further good news is that five University Medical Center clinical specialties now rank in the Top 100 nationally, an improvement from three last year. Your daily commitment to excellence is inspiring and your dedication to our patients, our communities, and to each other is extraordinary. We look forward to achieving our vision of becoming the best public academic health system in the country. Thank you!

Enhancing Patient Safety and Infection Prevention
As part of UVA Health’s ongoing efforts to enhance patient safety and infection prevention, we're introducing new, transmission-based, precaution signs and implementing Enteric Contact Isolation across our facility. We've updated signage to ensure clear and consistent communication regarding necessary precautions for different types of transmission-based infections.
These new signs — rolling out July 29 — are designed to be visually intuitive and informative, making it easier for all staff to quickly understand and adhere to required precautions. Questions? Contact Hospital Epidemiology/Infection Prevention and Control at 434.924.0260 or PIC: 1243. Read more on KnowledgeLink.

'Unbelievably Excellent’ | Kudos for Our UVA Health Colleagues
To best serve our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their healthcare experience. Below is a selection of feedback praising our team members:
- “Wayne was my tech and he was simply amazing. A terrible life-or-death situation has me terrified of MRIs. Wayne focused solely on me! He kept my attention and had me focus on his eyes. He made a massive difference in my test. He — and only he — made this test possible for me. He is such an amazing part of UVA Health, and that's why I drive over an hour to be part of the UVA Health family. Wayne, you are invaluable! Thanks so much.”
- “I was beyond nervous for my appointment with the urologist. I can't begin to describe how great his bedside manner was. I am also a biomedical PhD student, so I love research and detailed answers. He sensed that and explained everything to me. I mean this when I say that this was literally the best appointment I've ever had with a doctor’s office. I typically skip reviews unless they are at one of the two possible extremes, and Mikel was not only on the positive end of that extreme, but he surpassed any hopes I had for a good appointment.”
- “We arrived early because we came from out of town. Tim noticed that we were in the waiting room, and we explained we were very early. (We were taken at exactly the scheduled time.) He asked if he could do anything to make us more comfortable. Another lady at reception gave me a bottle of water. Mission statements are usually developed in a board room and posted. Every person we encountered loved the mission. Dr. Buda is a great communicator who answered every one of my questions. The nurse was spectacular. Very professional and helpful. Tim called me the next morning with scheduled tests. Great follow through. A true gentleman. The entire experience was unbelievably excellent.”
Thank you to all team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care!

Exceptional and Extraordinary
UVA Health Neurosurgery has presented Shelly Rush-Evans, AG-ACNP, with the department’s highest honor for exceptional and extraordinary patient care: 2024 Message to Garcia Award.
Rush-Evans is consistently in the top percentile for patient satisfaction — this is just one example of how she goes above and beyond:
An inpatient at a Harrisonburg, Virginia hospital was on a pump that delivered medication to the patient’s spinal canal. The medication level was dangerously low. There was no provider there that could refill the patient’s pump — and the patient could not come to Charlottesville. Here at UVA Health, Rush-Evans worked with the Harrisonburg hospital’s HR and pharmacy to secure emergency credentialing privileges and the proper medication. Then she drove more than 60 miles to Harrisonburg to take care of this patient.
Congratulations to Rush-Evans and thank you to all our team members for supporting our mission of transforming health and inspiring hope for all!

- “As we’ve gotten to know Toni Kistner, FNP, it has fostered a very worthwhile relationship between us. My wife and I are usually seen at the same time, so we all stay on the same page.”
- “Dr. Hall patiently listened to our story and was honest in his assessment. He has an engaging and compassionate demeanor, which Is appreciated.”
- “Dr. McGhee, in all respects, was beyond exceptional. The honesty and medical professionalism cannot be fully defined. Her answers to questions allowed us to fully trust her expertise. We were blessed to have her for surgery.”
- “UVA Health was the best choice for my medical care! I felt seen, heard, and like a priority. Thank you very much to the pediatrics nurses who comforted me until my mom and dad arrived. It was my first hospital visit ever, and I was in pain and scared. They made me feel safe and like everything would be okay ... and it is. Thank you again!”
Thank you to all team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care.

HIT Implements Cybersecurity Enhancement Measures
Health Information Technology (HIT) will implement preventive measures to protect patient data and help ensure uninterrupted care. Beginning June 28, it rolled out two security features for all team members:
- External Email Flag: All emails from external senders will be flagged. This external email warning will help alert users and help prevent them from clicking malicious links in emails sent by external senders.
- Report Suspicious Email Button in Outlook: Team members can use the “Report Suspicious Email” button in Outlook to report junk and phishing messages. Reporting these emails helps us protect data and teaches the Microsoft filters to catch spam and suspicious email before it arrives in inboxes. To learn more about how to utilize the Report Suspicious Email Button, please refer to the tip sheet.

Surgery Wayfinding: Name Change Is Coming Soon
A day-of-surgery wayfinding improvement project is underway — a big component of which is a name change to University Hospital’s second floor registration area. Currently called “OR & Procedure Check In,“ this space is used to register patients and welcome visitors waiting for patients in surgery. With the combination of patients registering on the second floor (direct admits, main OR surgery, Cath Lab, and IR), we are excited to share the new name to globally direct patients and families: “Admitting and Surgical Waiting.” Signs will start transitioning the first week of July. This phase of the wayfinding project will include directional signage from the Battle Building, parking garages, and surrounding areas.
New: Saturday Lab Hours at ECCCC
Effective July 6, the lab at the Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center (ECCCC) will offer Saturday lab appointments for patients in need of urgent lab testing. This expansion of service will help expedite care for those in need and help divert non-emergent patients from the Emergency Department.
- What: Saturday appointments for urgent labs, to include venipuncture (adult and pediatric patients), urine collection, and home collection specimens drop off.
- Patients with emergent labs who require medical attention should still be seen in the Emergency Department.
- Where: Lab at Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center (First Floor, Room 1990c)
- When: Saturdays, 8 a.m.-2 p.m.
- How: Two ways to schedule: send in-basket message to Ancillary Clerical Support Pool or providers may send a scheduling ticket to the patient through MyChart so they can self-schedule online. See tip sheet for details.
Construction Update: Fontaine Research Park
Fontaine Research Park is undergoing an exciting and significant transformation with the development of the UVA Paul and Diane Manning Institute of Biotechnology. Good news: the blasting component of this project is ahead of schedule and will be complete soon. Because of this, we will be returning to previous parking operations earlier than expected. Starting Monday, July 8:
- U9 permit holders will be able to return to parking at Fontaine Research Park.
- Valet parking will no longer be provided.
- There will be a reduction in golf carts, but traffic control will be maintained.
For details, please review the Fontaine construction website.

May The Force Be With Them
UVA Health Children’s patients and their families got a special visit June 28 from “The Mandalorian” TV series star and UVA alumna Emily Swallow who dressed in costume as her Armorer character! She’d returned to Charlottesville as part of the Virginia Theater Festival’s 50th anniversary celebration and asked local members of the global 501st Legion if she could join their hospital visit.
“The way kids respond to my costume or any Star Wars characters — they just light up!” says Swallow. “It’s a gift to me to be able to … make somebody’s day. Gives them a break in the monotony of going through treatments. A lot of the parents are fans, too, so it brightens their day a little bit!”
Thank you to Swallow and the cosplayers for visiting patients and their families!

UVA Undergrad’s Discovery Could Spur Better Crohn’s Treatments for Kids, Adults
Remarkable new research by a UVA undergraduate may help explain recurrent Crohn’s disease in children and open the door to new ways to treat or even cure the devastating condition.
Crohn’s is a debilitating — and possibly life-threatening — inflammation of the digestive tract. Symptoms include abdominal pain, weakness, fatigue, and malnutrition caused by the body’s inability to absorb nutrients. It’s most common in adults but afflicts tens of thousands of children in the United States alone. Many of those kids struggle to go to school and find their lives and childhoods greatly disrupted. These children can suffer stunted growth and delayed puberty and may need to have sections of their bowels surgically removed.
UVA’s new research suggests answers to why children with relapsing Crohn’s endure repeated bouts even after appearing to recover. Working under the guidance of the UVA School of Medicine’s Chelsea Marie, PhD (left), undergrad Rebecca Pierce (right) found that children with relapsing Crohn’s had a persistent disruption of their microbiomes — the collection of microorganisms that lives in our guts — even after inflammation was successfully controlled by treatment.
Thank you to Pierce, Dr. Marie, and all who work to improve the lives of our patients. Read more on Connect.
