U.S. News & World Report Rankings for 2025-26
U.S. News & World Report has released its “Best Hospitals” guide, with national and regional rankings across hospitals, Specialties, and Procedures & Conditions. Inova Fairfax is ranked #1, VCU #2, and Sentara Norfolk #3, with Virginia Hospital Center ranked #4 this year, and University Medical Center tied for #5 with Winchester Hospital and Chippenham & Johnston-Willis. Additionally, the number of high-performing ranked specialties we offer to our patients stayed consistent at four, and include Cancer, Orthopedics, Gastroenterology/GI Surgery, and Urology. It is important to remember that with the USNWR methodology, the data for both Specialty and Procedures & Conditions rankings lags. Specialty rankings were compiled from data collected between 2021 and 2023, while Procedures & Conditions were rated using data from 2019 and 2023. While the data used to produce the rankings is still incredibly valuable for understanding where we are doing well and where we must advance — it doesn’t tell the full story of what we’ve done over the last two years to improve outcomes, clinical documentation, patient progression, staffing, and reputation — all of which impact our standing. We will continue to discuss planned improvement strategies as a team over the coming year.

“Nothing’s More Important in This Hospital Than the Patients”
UVA Health’s Summer Junior Volunteer Program offers high school students a unique, eight-week opportunity to gain real-world experience in a hospital setting. With 37 teens serving across 15 departments, the program supports administrative, hospitality, clinical, and retail areas. This program not only fosters early professional development but also strengthens our culture of learning and community benefit.
One Junior Volunteer, Mukund Marri, recently demonstrated our ASPIRE values when he encountered an individual in the lobby who said he was having the “worst day of his life.” Read below to learn more about this heartwarming moment.
“I was at the hospital a few weeks ago, on probably the worst day of my life. That morning, I lost one of my closest friends, and a few weeks before this I was diagnosed with cancer. I remember just walking around the hospital — no real direction, just lost. I ended up sitting down somewhere and started crying.
“Then, this kid in a red shirt comes up to me. ... What really stood out was how he came up, all upbeat and smiling, like, 'Hey, sir! How’s your day going?’ He just had this positive energy that kind of caught me off guard in a good way.
“I was wearing a football sweatshirt and he pointed at it and said he liked football, too. That kicked off a little conversation, and he just kept it light and friendly. Even when he saw I was clearly upset, he didn’t act uncomfortable or pull away. He stayed right there, kept talking to me, like it was the most normal thing in the world.
“At one point I asked him if he had to be somewhere, and he said something like, 'Nothing’s more important in this hospital than the patients.' That stuck with me hard.
“He sat with me at least 15 minutes, maybe more. He didn’t act like he was in a rush, just kept that same good energy and stayed with me. I told him I didn’t want anyone else knowing what we talked about, and he made that little zipping-his-mouth motion and pretended to throw away the key. It actually made me smile for the first time that day — I even laughed a little bit. He ran off and brought me some tissues, and then right before he left, he asked if I needed a hug. I said yeah, and he gave me one. Then he shook my hand and just walked off like it was no big deal.
“Later on, I asked a staff person what the red polo shirts meant, and they told me he was a volunteer. That made me smile again — knowing that he didn't have to be here, but chose to.
“I don’t live anywhere near Virginia but, I swear, that kid makes me want to come back to UVA Health for my treatments. I just wanted someone to know how phenomenal your volunteer worker is!”
You never know when a caring act will make all the difference. Thank you, Mukund, for your kindness and empathy, and for exemplifying our ASPIRE values. You are a model for us all!

Food Is Medicine Emerging Leader
4P Foods has presented its Food Is Medicine Emerging Leader Award to UVA Health Office of Community Engagement and Health Outcomes for its commitment to Charlottesville’s Fifeville neighborhood.
As part of the Neighborhood Health program — started by UVA Health Chief Community Engagement and Health Outcomes Officer Tracy M. Downs, MD, FACS — UVA Health team members visit Charlottesville area neighborhoods identified by certain matrices including health outcomes. The office uses a social driver of health model, partnering with UVA School of Nursing to take in blood pressure and A1C screenings, while also working with the community to identify social needs. The Fifeville community identified access to healthy food as a priority.
Food access is an important issue in many of the areas we serve, says Jackie Martin, MPH, CDM, Director, Community Partnerships and Health Outcomes.
4P Foods works with 200+ independent, family farmers in Virginia, Maryland, Washington, D.C., and North Carolina, to deliver thousands of pounds of food monthly to communities through local partners. “This award celebrates a Food Is Medicine program that’s building orders around seasonal produce and locally sourced protein and dairy,” hails 4P Foods. “They are not only supporting local farmers, but also promoting a healthier and more sustainable food culture.”
Congratulations to UVA Health Office of Community Engagement and Health Outcomes!

Rosner, MD, MACP, FRCP, interim Executive Vice President for Health Affairs. “I am excited to see the hard work of our team members recognized with these national awards.” Read more about the awards on Connect.

Maintenance on Safety Data Sheet
Sunday, July 27 | 9 a.m.-3 p.m. | Security updates to UVA’s Safety Data Sheet (SDS) database provider may affect its accessibility for approximately six hours. Users attempting to access the SDS database will experience intermittent interruption in service during this period. During the downtime, team members should use an internet search engine (like Google) to search for a specific SDS. For example, if there is a problem with an infant heel warmer, search for "infant heel warmer safety data sheet." The SDS would show what actions should be taken to contain a spill or address an exposure. Team members should also refer to the Red Book in their areas.
Dentistry: Ready for New Appointments
UVA Health Dentistry downsized during the COVID years and patient capacity shrank as a result. After several years of rebuilding, it is now fully staffed and hoping to attract new UVA team members and their spouses and children. If you do not currently have a dental home and would like the convenience of our on-Grounds location, please reach out and make a new patient exam appointment by calling 434.924.1774. It has four experienced faculty and a regionally recognized residency program with four talented residents here to learn about hospital dentistry. Please consider receiving your dental care within your UVA family.

Appreciation
‘She Really Listened to Me’ | Kudos to Our UVA Health Colleagues
To best serve our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their healthcare experience. Below is a selection of feedback praising our team members:
- “I want to commend April for her fabulous and professional treatment process. She really listened to me. The heart echo was so much better than the last one I had, and I just loved her work suite — it was peaceful and beautiful. Jacqui was wonderful as well for my blood work. Really, I can't say enough about that appointment! I was nervous and I am working on some tough things right now and both of these wonderful practitioners put me at ease and made me feel happy to be there doing these steps in my healthcare.”
- “I can't begin to express my sincere thanks for the level of care that I received from NP Lisa. This was my first visit and, in the future, I will always come back to UVA Health’s Midlife Health clinic. Lisa is an exemplary NP with attention to detail and a great communicator — both in person and on MyChart. I felt seen, heard, and respected during my clinic visit. I have so much peace of mind knowing I'm in good hands at the clinic. I haven't met the doctors in the clinic, but — after my visit with Lisa — I'm sure they must be excellent!”
- “The team member that got me checked in and validated my parking was so pleasant — I think her badge said Lorri, if I recall correctly. ... She was super friendly and attentive, and seemed like she was doing an excellent job of checking in with coworkers and patients to keep everything running smoothly.”
Thank you to our team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care!

The SDS would show what actions should be taken to contain a spill or address an exposure. Team members should also refer to the Red Book in their areas.

Finding Confidence, One Haircut at a Time: How CareCuts Helps Patients Reclaim Their Identity
When Julie Gottschalk walked into her CareCuts appointment, she expected to leave with a shaved head. Chemotherapy had begun taking its toll on her signature long curly ringlets. But instead of shaving it off, the stylist suggested something unexpected: a stylish short bob.
Julie left the appointment surprised and delighted, recalling, “It was great to walk out of the CareCut and feel good about how I looked after my short cut.”
For patients like Sarah Burke, hair loss wasn’t just cosmetic. It was deeply personal.
A free haircut at Flourish through CareCuts was a turning point. “I wasn’t prepared for the challenges I’d face after treatment,” she explains. “I wanted a cute haircut, but I’d never had short hair and didn’t know where to start. My CareCuts appointment made me feel really cute when I walked out. It was one step toward my new normal.”
Thanks to programs like CareCuts, UVA Health is helping patients rediscover themselves with every step, snip, and smile. Read more on Connect in the latest installment in the Hope at Work series.

Shout Out to Our Researchers!
While many at UVA Health deliver care to our patients or educate students about the delivery of such care, our colleagues conducting research shape the medicine we deliver tomorrow — and how we deliver it. Examples:
- HIV Drugs for Alzheimer’s | Jayakrishna Ambati, MD (pictured), and collaborators found that NRTIs used to treat HIV also offer substantial protection for Alzheimer’s disease. While further testing is needed, Ambati says the drugs could prevent a million cases of Alzheimer’s per year. Ambati also has developed an alternative drug, K9, he plans to test for Alzheimer’s.
- Peanut Allergy Treatment | At UVA Health Children’s, a real-world test of peanut oral immunotherapy in children younger than 3 showed the approach is safe and effective. Researcher Jonathan Hemler, MD, and colleagues are calling for multicenter trials based on the highly successful results seen in the 27 children who completed the study.
- Sound Waves for Cavernomas | An incision-free focused ultrasound technique developed at UVA Health has shown great promise for treating debilitating brain lesions called cerebral cavernous malformations, or cavernomas. In early testing, Richard J. Price, PhD, and his team found the technique halted the growth of the cavernomas almost entirely.
- App Detects Heart Attacks, Strokes | A potentially lifesaving new smartphone app being developed by UVA Health’s Jonathan R. Crowe, MD, MPH, and colleagues can help people determine if they are suffering heart attacks or strokes and should seek medical attention, a clinical study found.
This is only a sampling of the research that occurs here daily. (More can be found in the UVA Health Newsroom.) We’re grateful to these team members and to all who expand our knowledge of medical science. Thank you, researchers!

Response to Leadership Transitions
From Mitchell H. Rosner, MD, MACP, FRCP, interim EVP for Health Affairs, University of Virginia, Henry B. Mulholland Professor of Medicine: “I am sure you are trying to make sense of the recent announcements of leadership transitions both at the University and Health System. These changes can be unsettling, and I fully understand that you may have questions and concerns about the direction of our institution. First and foremost, my priority is to make sure UVA Health continues to be there for our community, and our patients and their families. This is a responsibility we cannot fall short on. To that end, we are working on a transition plan to ensure seamless operations and ensure no disruptions to patient care. I will have more details to share on this plan in the coming weeks. However, any plan will rely on each and every one of us to continue our focus on the work ahead — something that I have no doubt we will do with excellence and grace.” Read more on KnowledgeLink.

UVA Health Family Medicine and Same Day Care Dominion
Opens Monday, July 21 | UVA Health will begin offering services at a new location in Culpeper that supports the continued need for primary care services. UVA Health Family Medicine and Same Day Care Dominion at 731 Dominion Square Shopping Center supports our 10-year strategic plan by enhancing ambulatory access to primary care and bolstering our capacity to deliver value-based care programs.
According to Erik Shannon, CEO, UVA Community Health, and Stephen Keiser, Chief Operations and Growth Officer, UVA Community Health Medical Group: the need for this facility is reinforced by our latest Community Health Needs Assessment, which identifies a growing demand for primary care services within the expanding population of Culpeper County.
The practice includes Kearn Ghuman, DO (pictured) board-certified family medicine physician with extensive primary care experience, and Heather Cannova, FNP, from UVA Health Piedmont Urgent Care. An additional physician will join in fall 2026. This location also functions as an access point for patients who may seek chronic disease management in hospital emergency departments rather than with their primary care providers.
We recognize the UVA Community Health Board of Directors for their support of this impactful project and for acknowledging the requests from our communities for additional primary care services.

Appreciation
‘Spunk, Personality, Care, and Compassion’ | Kudos to Our UVA Health Colleagues
To best serve our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their healthcare experience. Below is a selection of feedback praising our team members:
- “My experience with hip replacement surgery was extremely well managed in every way — from the pre-op coordination and instructions to the day-of care and the post-op recovery process. I particularly appreciated being assigned a patient coordinator — in my case, nurse Tory, who has been available throughout my healthcare journey to address my questions and concerns. To her credit, she has initiated phone calls to discuss more complicated questions and ensure my understanding and comfort. Thanks to the entire UVA Health staff for a smooth, well-orchestrated experience from start to finish!”
- “Getting a mammogram is never fun and there is always worry in the back of your mind that something could be found. However, this time, I met Angie. She has spunk, personality, care, and compassion. She made me so comfortable, and we chatted while doing the test and it truly eased my mind. I asked Angie before leaving if I was able to request her for the next time — that's how good she was. She said, 'Absolutely.' That makes me happy!”
- “Sarah McLaughlin is the best dental hygienist who has ever cared for me. She is caring and compassionate, clinically talented and astute, and so personable. She demonstrates that she truly cares for me from the start of my visit to the end. ... I fully trust her with my care, and I am delighted to have her as my dental hygienist.”
Thank you to our team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care!

Windows 11 Upgrade for All PCs Across UVA Health
UVA Health HIT is upgrading all devices from Windows 10 to Windows 11 as part of our commitment to providing the best tools and technology for enhanced productivity and security. With Microsoft retiring Windows 10 at the end of October, HIT is upgrading existing devices across the health system until the end of November.
In most areas, the upgrade will be deployed to computers automatically and completed after business hours. For departments operating 24/7, the upgrade will be scheduled during slower shifts, affecting only a limited number of computers at a time. For areas where any computer downtime is not feasible, HIT will collaborate with stakeholders to minimize potential disruptions. To prepare, team members are encouraged to back up critical files to network locations like the F: drive or departmental folders. While no data loss is expected, this precaution ensures data safety in case of upgrade issues. For more details on interface changes, visit the HIT intranet site or refer to the ServiceNow article.

Typenex Bands Going Away, New 'Type and Screen' Order for Pre-Transfusion Testing
Implemented prior to 1984 and once the standard of care for labeling and tracking patient blood specimens, Typenex blood bands will no longer be used at UVA Health facilities effective July 15, 2025. The trifecta of Electronic Positive Patient Identification (EPPID), Blood Product Administration Module (BPAM), and Transfusion Time-Outs — all currently standard work across UVA Health — will continue to be used to ensure accurate labeling of patient specimens and delivery of the correct blood product to the patient.
With the elimination of the Typenex band, we also will retire the “Type and Hold” (TYHD) order from Epic and replace it with a new “Type and Screen” (TASN) order for pre-transfusion testing, and a streamlined “Prepare” order to request the number of units to be crossmatched for the patient. Starting July 15, Ambulatory clinics will need to replace active collected or signed “Type and Hold” orders that contain a red blood cell (RBC) order with the new “Type and Screen” order and a separate “Prepare RBC” order.

Fontaine Research Park Garage Update
The new 1,250-space parking garage is nearing completion at Fontaine Research Park. The garage will serve U9 permit holders and health system commuters currently parking at the Emmet/Ivy Garage. To support patient access, Parking and Transportation also will reassign some existing U9 surface lot spaces as patient-only parking once the garage opens.
While the project is ahead of its contractual schedule (originally set for November 2025), the garage still must complete inspections and receive a certificate of occupancy before it can open to vehicles. The construction team is working diligently to accelerate the timeline, and we’ll share updates as soon as they’re available.

Appreciation
Gratitude From Camp Holiday Trails
Wendy Horton, PharmD, MBA, FACHE, Chief Executive Officer, University Medical Center, recently received a wonderful note from Tina LaRoche, Executive Director, Camp Holiday Trails, and we wanted to share it.
“I just want to take a minute to send our thank you to a group of people who have been instrumental in Camp Holiday Trails' year-round programs for children and teens with medical needs and their siblings. Our three core programs include day and overnight Summer Camp, year-round Family Camps, and year-round Pop Up Camps that travel to hospitals and partners in the Mid-Atlantic region.
- Dr. Madhusmita Misra, Chair of Pediatrics, has helped secure time at camp for many UVA Health physicians and residents.
- Dr. Meg Keeley and Jill Clarke have helped secure the fourth-year pediatrics elective that medical students have spent at Camp Holiday Trails for over 25 years (and perhaps longer).
- Dr. Ina Stephens serves as our medical director and has stewarded us through COVID and now measles concerns.
- Teresa Green, Amy Cesak, and Tina Knicely have all been instrumental in camper recruitment and supporting our in-hospital Pop Up Camp program.”
Thank you to Tina for sharing this note, to those listed above for their service and dedication, and to all in our community who support Camp Holiday Trails!
