Thank You: Volunteers at UVA Children’s Community Pediatric Vaccination Event
On Saturday, June 25, UVA Children’s hosted a vaccination event, offering the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine to children 6 months through 4 years of age. Thank you to the 25 volunteers — nurses, physicians, techs, CNAs, representatives from Volunteer Services, pharmacists, and a medical student — who dressed as superheroes or Disney characters to make the day a little more fun (and less scary) as they administered vaccines to 177 of our smaller patients. "We were all so happy to take this opportunity to serve our community," says Teresa Green, Director, UVA Children’s Hospital. "Parents were so happy this day had finally come and shared some of the things they were going to be able to do now that their child/children were vaccinated!" See photos from the event on Connect.

UVA Experts Help Write New Safe-Sleep Guidelines to Reduce Infant Deaths
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has updated its safe-sleep guidelines for infants for the first time in more than five years, emphasizing that babies should sleep on their backs on flat, level surfaces to reduce their risk of Sudden Unexpected Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). It’s estimated that there are 3,500 sleep-related infant deaths in the United States each year. Many of those deaths are preventable, and the authors of the new guidelines are urging parents to take simple steps to help keep their children safe. UVA Children’s Rachel Moon, MD, served as lead author of the new guidelines, and Fern Hauck, MD, MS, also contributed to this important work. We thank these two providers for their thought leadership and dedication to keeping the smallest members of our communities healthy and safe. Read more on Connect.

IV Iodinated Contrast Update: Shortages Impacting Partner Services
Our partnerships within UVA Health and across the region have been essential to our ability to conserve limited supplies of IV iodinated contrast and provide imaging services to as many patients as possible. Some regional partners who were not immediately impacted by the contrast supply shortage, like Augusta Health, were instrumental in providing additional imaging services to our patients in need, and we are extremely grateful for the collaboration. Currently, Augusta Health is reporting that they are being more directly impacted by the shortage and will not be able to perform additional outpatient studies for UVA Health patients, including Oncology. We do not anticipate a change in our ability to provide clinically indicated contrast CT scans services as long as our current supply chain remains consistent and we continue with all conservation efforts. Read details in the June 17 email from Reid Adams, MD, Chief Medical Officer, and Alan Matsumoto, MD, Chair, Department of Radiology and Medical Imaging, or on Connect.

Temporary Outage of Rapid Testing Platform
Wednesday, June 8 | Starting at 2:30 p.m. | The rapid testing platform on which many of our COVID tests are run (as well as the COVID/Flu A & B/RSV combined test, C. difficile, MRSA, and Enterovirus) is undergoing repairs. It is uncertain when the system will be back in operation, so please plan accordingly. Until repairs are complete, testing is being performed on a platform with a four-to-six-hour turnaround. Please note the following:
- Testing for C. difficile, MRSA, and Enterovirus will be delayed until repairs are complete.
- There is no change in the ordering process for COVID, Influenza, or RSV. The laboratory will prioritize tests that would typically run on the rapid platform.
- Policies regarding testing and inpatient bed placement of asymptomatic patients are unchanged. It is acceptable to place an asymptomatic patient in a semi-private room as long as they screen negatively for COVID signs/symptoms. Please mask the patient/roommate until testing results return.
- Policies regarding testing and isolation of symptomatic patients also remain unchanged, however, it is recommended to order tests early. Appropriate isolation and infection precautions should be taken until negative results return.
- Patients under investigation for COVID already in the inpatient environment should be discussed with hospital epidemiology per guidelines.
To ensure staff can focus on optimizing processing times, please do NOT call the laboratory regarding test results unless the six-hour turnaround time has been exceeded. Questions? Contact Dr. Melinda Poulter, Director, Clinical Microbiology, at mdp3s@hscmail.mcc.virginia.edu or 434.924.5667.

Population Health Team Working to Improve Patient Outcomes With a Rainbow Wheel
The Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) Rainbow Wheel is a tool that helps identify the socio-economic factors, health behaviors, and physical environments that may be impacting a patient’s overall well-being and creating barriers to healthcare. The Wheel works by identifying barriers, so care teams can create pathways around them, thus giving the patient a more positive outcome. SDoHs account for an estimated 80% of health outcomes in the United States with the remaining 20% attributed to medical care in a hospital or clinic. The Rainbow Wheel application was part of the May 25 Epic upgrade, and Population Health is managing a six-month voluntary pilot of the platform, rolling it out to clinics that have expressed interest in using it. Thank you to the Population Health team for leading this effort that is so important to the long-term health of our community. Read more on Connect.

Appreciation
Ending Gun Violence
In recognition of National Gun Violence Awareness Day today, June 3, UVA Medical Center will illuminate the South Tower in orange for a final of three nights. Gun Violence Awareness Day is also known as Wear Orange Day to increase attention on the issue and end gun violence. Gun violence is a public health crisis, and it affects us all. These events are shocking, painful, frustrating, and horrific. They take a toll on our mental health and work directly counter to the mission that we at UVA Health work so hard to fulfill — to preserve life and relieve pain and suffering. After sunset tonight, check out the South Tower and pause for a moment of silence for the victims of gun violence.

Celebrating LGBTQ+ Pride Month
The nation recognizes June as Pride Month. This month is a time to acknowledge and celebrate the LGBTQ+ community. Equity, diversity, and inclusion are among our shared values at UVA Health — and community and health equity is one of the main pillars of our mission. We strongly support the LGBTQ+ community. We stand in solidarity because, by putting our patients at the center of everything we do, we provide compassionate and inclusive care regardless of their backgrounds, such as sexual orientation and gender identity. This support has made UVA Health a national leader in LGBTQ+ healthcare services, like gender-affirming care, recognition that makes us exceptionally proud.
A reflection of our commitment to upholding the dignity of all people and celebrating our diversity, we invite you to join the UVA Health community in observing Pride Month. Take a moment to explore this excellent resource on healthcare and the LGBTQ+ community from the Claude Moore Health Sciences Library. Also, read UVA Health Update and Connect in the coming days to learn more about how you can participate in Pride Month events throughout June.

CORRECTION
Amendment to Graduation Numbers
In the May 25 edition, the UVA Health Update reported on graduation numbers for our School of Medicine and School of Nursing students, accidentally omitting the nine MD/PhD students in the roundup of those who graduated. Their achievements are remarkable and we sincerely apologize to those nine students and to the educators who played an important role in their journey here at the University of Virginia. Congratulations!

Booster Doses Now Available for 5-11 Year-Olds
At UVA Health, children 5-11 years old can now begin to receive a single booster dose at least five months after they complete their primary Pfizer series. Children 5-11 years who are immunocompromised can receive this booster dose three months after completion of their primary series. Families can call 434.297.4829 (434.297.4VAX) to schedule a booster, or they can call their child’s clinic for options. Learn more about COVID-19 vaccine on this FAQ. Temporary Outage of Rapid Testing Platform
Friday, June 3 | 6:30 a.m.- 2 p.m. | There will be a temporary outage of the rapid testing platform on June 3 on which many of our COVID tests for admissions and Emergency Department are run (as well as the COVID/Flu A & B/RSV combined test, C. difficile, MRSA, and Enterovirus). Testing will be shifted to a platform with a four-to-six-hour turnaround in the interim. Please plan accordingly.
- Cases relating to PUIs already in the inpatient environment should be discussed with hospital epidemiology as per guidelines.
In order to ensure staff are dedicated to optimizing turnaround times, please do NOT call the laboratory regarding test results unless the six-hour turnaround time has been exceeded. Questions? Contact Dr. Melinda Poulter, Director, Clinical Microbiology, at mdp3s@hscmail.mcc.virginia.edu or 434.924.5667.

Patients, families, and UVA Health team members can nominate anyone who impacts patient care, including nursing assistants, respiratory therapists, occupational therapists, Environmental Services team members, front desk team members, transporters, and more.
