Celebrating National Doctors’ Day
March 30 is National Doctors’ Day and UVA Health senior leadership took a moment this morning to recognize this special occasion dedicated to honoring the contributions of physicians. This one day of the year serves as a reminder of the profound impact they have on our patients, their families, and the communities we serve.”
“In celebration of National Doctors' Day, we encourage team members to take a moment to express your gratitude to those physicians you work with every day. A simple thank you can make all the difference, acknowledging the dedication and compassion our doctors bring to their work. University Medical Center: New Attendance Policy
Effective, Monday, April 1 | In direct response to feedback we heard from leaders, and in support of our efforts to make UVA Health a great place to work, UVA Health University Medical Center will be revising its attendance policy to offer team members more flexibility. Changes include:
- Eliminating department addendums to have one consistent attendance policy across our operations.
- Extending the time at which disciplinary action occurs for unscheduled absences and/or lateness. Today, counseling is initiated on the team member’s fifth tardy within a year, followed by termination on their eighth occurrence. Now, we are instituting the following:
- 7th tardy: informal counseling
- 8th tardy: formal counseling
- 9th tardy: performance warning
- 10th tardy: termination
- For clinical areas: We’re changing the time a person is considered tardy from 1 minute to 5 minutes, giving our team members a bigger window in which to clock in while still recognizing the need to adequately staff our departments.
If you have questions about the new attendance policy, please contact your manager. Managers may contact their HR Business Partner with questions.
Benefits Wednesday: Meet a Counselor
Wednesday, April 3 | 7 a.m.-3 p.m. | Medical Center Dining Conference Room 3 | Ask questions and discuss your benefits with a Human Resources counselor. Walk-ins welcome. See monthly dates.

Appreciation
‘The Best Care’ | Kudos for Our UVA Health Colleagues
To provide the best possible service and care for our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their recent healthcare experience. Below is a small selection of recent feedback praising our outstanding team members:
- “The triage doctor listened to my concerns and ordered a CT scan with contrast and labs. He was pleasant and efficient. The doctor I saw the second time I was brought back was exceptional. He took the time to explain what was going on and to answer all the questions when I got a surprise diagnosis of no kidney stones. As busy as the Emergency Department was, he made me feel like I was the only patient when he was in the room. I know he was running everywhere, so it was especially thoughtful for him to focus on the patient when he was in the room. My medical care by the doctors was greatly appreciated.”
- “Dr. Jeff Elias and his whole team are ‘rock stars.’ The nurses and everyone that participated, including the Medtronic representative, did an excellent job. I have always been impressed with the care and attention shown to me.”
- “Dr. Gelker is the absolute most professional, caring, and knowledgeable physician I or my husband have ever encountered. She is detail oriented, truly listens, and seems like she has all the time in the world for each and every patient, yet somehow is able to stay on schedule. Her reputation is excellent around Charlottesville!”
- “From the moment we arrived until the time we left, we were given the best care. Our questions were answered. All the staff were personable and caring. Jared was particularly very sensitive to our needs. The entire experience was very positive. Dr. James Browne was exceptional in his treatment. We only have good things to say about UVA Health Orthopedics!”
Thanks to all our team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care.

Spring Cleaning Week
March 25-29 | As part of our ongoing commitment to patient safety and quality, it is essential that we regularly check our workspaces and all clinical areas for expired supplies and dispose of them in the most responsible manner possible. Spring is an opportune time for a housewide clean-up effort! To add a little extra motivation, we will raffle off a free lunch to participating departments/units/clinics. Details:
- Spring Cleaning Week is March 25-29.
- Scour your areas for expired supplies (and remember that supplies are stored in many locations, so search every corner!).
- Bring expired supplies to the following drop off locations:
- Inpatient: University Hospital room G821 (near loading dock) 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Label box/bag with department/unit/clinic name to ensure entry in the raffle.
- Ambulatory: Ambulatory directors will collect supplies from their clinics and deliver them to Rachel Nauman’s office.
- Please check for expired and outdated items. Examples:
- point of care testing (POCT) supplies — glucose test strips and controls
- old paper copies of POCT procedure manual
- outdated Red Books
- incomplete Orientation Competency Assessment forms
- expired IV solution bags, blood culture bottles, or blood culture vacutainers
- expired or opened single-use bottles (such as betadine or hydrogen peroxide)
- Any department/unit/clinic that participates will have their name recorded at drop off and entered in a raffle for a free lunch of their choosing. Tacos? Thai? Pizza? It’s your call! There will be one winner for inpatient and one winner for ambulatory.
The expired supplies will be sorted, and any reusable items will be donated to the Medical Equipment Recovery of Clean Inventory (MERCI) Program, of which UVA Health is a proud supporter.
While we are sponsoring this Spring Cleaning Week, review and disposal of expired supplies should happen regularly across all facilities. The MERCI Program operates year-round to accept expired supplies and funnel those that are safe to reuse to groups in need. Visit the MERCI Program page for more information.
We know this is a very busy time with ongoing Joint Commission preparations, so we thank you in advance for your attention to this important matter.

Medical Care During Ramadan
Ramadan began on the evening of Sunday, March 10, and ends at sundown on Tuesday, April 9. One of the fundamental principles in observing this holy month for followers of Islam is fasting during daylight, which includes not taking oral medications. Please be aware of this custom and ask patients if they will be observing Ramadan. If so, it would be prudent to discuss a medication plan with them to ensure optimal medical care while they observe this holy month. Read more on Connect.

‘Treated With Friendliness and Respect’ | Kudos for Our UVA Health Colleagues
To provide the best possible service and care for our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their recent healthcare experience. Below is a small selection of recent feedback praising our outstanding team members:
- “Everyone was great! The anesthesiologist listened very carefully to my concerns and needs, and addressed all of them fully, as did the MD performing my procedure. It was as good as a colonoscopy can get!”
- “Dr. Cooper listened to my health updates, asked me questions, and recommended a new medication as a treatment option. I feel very lucky to have Dr. Cooper as my provider. I highly recommend him.”
- “We felt like the whole team was listening to our questions and answering them patiently. I felt completely at ease. I was treated with friendliness and respect throughout.”
- “My doctor is the best always! He listens and treats me like a friend. This is the reason I travel from Delaware to be seen by a caring doctor. I am a retired nurse and know about quality care and compassion.”
Thanks to all our team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care.

Rock Your Socks on World Down Syndrome Day
Thursday, March 21 | World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) is a global awareness day which has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012. The date for WDSD — the 21st day of the third month — was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome. Learn more about how this day is celebrated globally.
UVA Health Children’s is one of four Down syndrome medical care centers in Virginia. At UVA Health, children with Down syndrome are seen in both the Developmental Pediatric Clinic and the Pediatric Orthopedic Clinic, since Down syndrome is associated with multiple musculoskeletal problems, largely related to generalized ligamentous laxity and joint hypermobility.
Every year, on March 21, people come together to celebrate WDSD by wearing brightly colored, mismatched socks. Socks were chosen because the karyotype of Down syndrome chromosomes actually looks like mismatched socks. Providers and clinic staff can support the Virginia Down Syndrome organization’s “Rock Your Socks” campaign by wearing fun socks in celebration of WDSD.
- Step UP for Down Syndrome | Sunday, April 21 | 1-4 p.m. | Piedmont YMCA | This event is designed to bring the community together to show support and solidarity with individuals with Down syndrome. This is a great family festival which includes food, music, face painting, inflatables, silent auction, and more. Learn more and register.

Medical Care During Ramadan
Ramadan began on the evening of Sunday, March 10, and ends at sundown on Tuesday, April 9. One of the fundamental principles in observing this holy month for followers of Islam is fasting during daylight, which includes not taking oral medications. If so, it would be prudent to discuss a medication plan with them to ensure optimal medical care while they observe this holy month. Read more on Connect.

‘A True Gem’ | Kudos for Our UVA Health Colleagues
To provide the best possible service and care for our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their recent healthcare experience. Below is a small selection of recent feedback praising our outstanding team members:
- “I was provided with excellent customer service! This visit could not have been any better. I wish every medical care facility was this nice, well-coordinated, efficient, and staffed with the most pleasant professionals on the planet.”
- “It was a very good experience for me and my wife. I was fortunate to have Dr. Nicola as my hearing-aid doctor. She helped me improve my hearing with a very good hearing aid — allowing me to play golf without fear of losing them on the golf course — which is a very good relief for me. Dr. Nicola knows how to explain to me and my wife how to use the equipment. So far, they have worked very well. Thank you, Dr. Nicola.”
- “Destiny Dolin is a true gem. I had to communicate often with her due to my surgery getting canceled last minute as I had COVID. She is an amazing ambassador for the Plastics department, always responsive and understanding.”
- “Dr. Pinkerton came in to explain that she had a procedure and she would be right in. She made sure I was comfortable and warm while I waited an extra few minutes. Dr. Pinkerton always spends time with me, talking about my care. I'm very grateful for such excellent care.”
Thanks to all our team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care.

They provide medical nutrition therapy and nutrition counseling to adult, adolescent, and pediatric patients. Many RDNs work in specialized areas, such as transplant, nutrition support, oncology, renal, cardiology, GI, diabetes, bariatrics, neurology, and specialty pediatric areas — just to name a few. Please extend (belated) gratitude to these important team members!

On Monday, March 11, following President Biden’s State of the Union Address, Danielle Carnival, PhD, Deputy Assistant to the President for the Cancer Moonshot and Director for Health Outcomes for Office of Science and Technology Policy, came to UVA Comprehensive Cancer Center to uplift new announcements made by the President to advance the goals of the Biden Cancer Moonshot and his Unity Agenda.
The Cancer Moonshot announced new commitments from seven leading health insurance companies to begin paying for navigation services for people living with cancer and their families. In total, these health insurers serve more than 150 million Americans across the country.
Additionally, the Biden Cancer Moonshot announced 40 comprehensive cancer centers and community oncology practices nationwide that have committed to using the new navigation codes to deliver effective patient navigation to people facing cancer. Navigators guide families through every step of their cancer journey and have been shown to improve health outcomes and the patient experience by reducing times between diagnosis and treatment, and by increasing treatment completion.
Dr. Carnival discussed how this latest step will reduce cancer disparities, improve health outcomes, and create a pathway of continued support for more American families.

Shout Out to Our Researchers!
While many at UVA Health deliver care to our patients or educate students about the delivery of such care, our colleagues conducting research shape the medicine we deliver tomorrow — and how we deliver it. Recent examples:
- Improving Lung Transplants | Researchers led by Swapnil K. Sonkusare, PhD (pictured), have identified a potential way to improve lung transplant success by preventing damage when blood flow is restored to the organ.
- Better Breast Care | A decision-making aid developed by Lynn Dengel, MD, and Crystal Chu, PhD, RN, to help women at high risk of breast cancer decide whether to add MRIs to their screening regimen has proved popular with both patients and care providers alike.
- Preventing Atherosclerosis | A new “atlas of atherosclerosis” developed by Clint L. Miller, PhD, and colleagues reveals, at the level of individual cells, key processes responsible for the harmful plaque buildup and advances efforts to find better ways to prevent and treat it.
- Understanding Alzheimer’s | George Bloom, PhD, and his team revealed how harmful tau proteins damage the essential operating instructions for our brain cells, a finding which could lead to new treatments.
- Omega-3s to Slow Lung Fibrosis | Higher levels of omega-3 in blood plasma is associated with better lung function and longer transplant-free survival among patients with pulmonary fibrosis, John Kim, MD, and his collaborators found.
This is only a sampling of the research that occurs here daily. (More can be found in the UVA Health Newsroom.) We’re grateful to these team members and to all who expand our knowledge of medical science. Thank you, researchers!

Appreciation
‘Medicine at Its Best’ | Kudos for Our UVA Health Colleagues
To provide the best possible service and care for our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their recent healthcare experience. Below is a small selection of recent feedback praising our outstanding team members:
- “A heated massage chair and a comforting picture on the CT ceiling were much appreciated. Also, thank you for the snack basket goodies on the way out. I could feel the happiness of the staff working together. Someone said this was their second family. Medicine at its best.”
- “The whole of the emergency room personnel were efficient and quick to treat my injury. I was impressed with how I was received into the ER and how the process was orchestrated, so that so many procedures could be going on at the same time.”
- “I wish I could remember the name of the lady who performed my mammo — she is retiring this summer after 40 years with UVA Health — she was the absolute best. Of all the mammos I have had in the past, this was hands down the most pleasant experience. I also work at UVA Health and I hope I help my patients feel as comfortable as she made me.”
- “NP Emily Kock saved my life, because she took time to listen to me and my concerns. You are lucky to have her.”
Thanks to all our team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care.

Appreciation
Thank You to Our Social Worker Team Members
In celebration of Social Work Month, Leon Henry, MSW, LCSW, Ambulatory Social Work Manager, shares: “I want to express gratitude on behalf of the University Medical Center leadership team and care management. I have been blessed with the opportunity to engage with workers assigned to various units across inpatient units and in the ambulatory space. In doing so, I am moved — day in and day out — as a result of the work we do. The impact we have on patient care is invaluable and the value we bring to patient experience is immeasurable.”
“To my social worker colleagues: regardless of what department or patient population you are assigned, please know you are seen, respected, and appreciated. It takes a special person to sign up to be a social worker. We provide care for the most vulnerable patients in our health system; people who struggle everyday just to have their basic needs met during these challenging times.
“Thank you, UVA Health social workers, for your advocacy and commitment to providing patient care at the highest level. Also, I am grateful to University Medical Center leadership, who has been supportive and has prioritized the mission of addressing social determinants of health barriers.”
Thank you for sharing this heartfelt message, Leon. And we echo his sentiment: UVA Health social workers are the best!

Wonderful Collaboration
Virginia Master Naturalists (VMN) has named The Cleopatra Project — a collaboration among VMN, UVA School of Medicine, and UVA Health’s Blue Ridge Poison Center — as the Most Impactful Project of the Year.
The outreach program by VMN chapters across the state aims to educate the public on how to live safely and respectfully with Virginia’s poisonous and venomous animals.
Virginia Master Naturalist Alfred Goossens led the project in 2021, in response to hundreds of reports of human exposure to poisonous and venomous animals annually in the state. The resulting peer-reviewed reference guide, featuring 32 poisonous and venomous animals in Virginia, is available online. Printed copies also are distributed, and The Cleopatra Project team hosts presentations at libraries and to volunteer and professional groups.
“It has been a wonderful collaborative partnership to work with the Virginia Master Naturalists to create this award-winning publication that helps to educate the public on these amazing animals found within Virginia’s natural habitats,” says Christopher Holstege, MD, UVA Professor of Emergency Medicine; Chief, UVA School of Medicine Division of Medical Toxicology; and Medical Director, UVA Health’s Blue Ridge Poison Center (pictured).
A companion guide, The Socrates Project: Poisonous Plants of Virginia, also is available. Thank you to all involved for cultivating healthy communities statewide!

Same Day Care Clinic Available for Acute and Urgent Care Overflow
As respiratory and other illnesses circulate in our area, ambulatory clinics are reminded that UVA Health Same Day Care (SDC) is an available overflow option for acute/urgent adult patients, offering provider and nurse visits. In order to be seen at SDC, patients must be scheduled by a UVA Health clinic, department, or provider. Team members may schedule appointments directly in the “JPA Same Day CL” Epic department using visit type “PC Same Day.”
Pediatric patients should not be scheduled at SDC, nor should patients with emergent issues such as chest pain, suspicion of stroke, etc. Same Day Care is not a walk-in urgent care — patients need an appointment. For questions, contact Ben Dolewski, Ambulatory Director, Primary Care.

Planned Medical Gas Outage
7 p.m. Friday, March 1, through 8 p.m., Sunday, March 3 | A planned medical gas outage will affect magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), nuclear medicine, and interventional neuroradiology (INR). During this time, any INR cases requiring anesthesia will take place in interventional radiology (IR) room 6, located on the second floor of the IR department. To ensure that we can continue to provide safe and effective care to patients during this outage, each affected area has been stocked with portable suction and supplemental oxygen. If you are responding to a code event or other medical emergency in one of these areas during this time, please realize that wall-based oxygen outlets will be non-functional. Use supplemental oxygen in the provided tanks. Similarly, wall-based suction will not be functioning — instead, use the portable suction devices. Please share this information with your team and reach out to Rebekah Billings with questions or concerns about code response. For renovation project questions, please contact Hunter Durrer.

‘Truly Amazing’ | Kudos for Our UVA Health Colleagues
To provide the best possible service and care for our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their recent healthcare experience. Below is a small selection of recent feedback praising our outstanding team members:
- “The care my son received during this visit was phenomenal. We were blown away by how genuinely caring and kind every person we encountered was toward us. They were professional and very informative. Everyone spent time answering our questions and were clearly very knowledgeable. I have already recommended UVA Health to my friends and family.”
- “Vivian in scheduling was so helpful with each of my calls. She was truly amazing. I really appreciate her kindness. She was a great resource, as I was new to the system and looking specifically for a contrast-enhanced mammogram.”
- “Dr. Asthagiri is amazing. I came to him because of his level of expertise. But I also stay with him because of his willingness to explain everything in a way that I can understand. And I believe that he listens to me and considers my input.”
- “Always the best experience. My transplant team always gets back to me as soon as possible; they have supported me since day 1. They never give up on me. They root for me — even when I was difficult — and they saved my life several times and more. They are all truly amazing!”
Thanks to all our team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care.
