Construction Updates: Fontaine Research Park
Fontaine Research Park is undergoing an exciting and significant transformation with the development of the Paul and Diane Manning Institute of Biotechnology. To support this expansion, a new parking garage and central utility plant also are part of the plan. Please review the information and timeline to prepare for major changes.
- Timelines | These projects extend through 2027. Details.
- Blasting | Rock removal is required to build the Paul and Diane Manning Institute of Biotechnology and Fontaine Parking Garage. Blasting is the least impactful option for removing the rock. Blasts will occur Monday through Friday, at noon and at 3:30 p.m., and will sound like a series of firecrackers firing in sequence. It will only last a few seconds. Details.
- Parking | Parking options for team members, patients, and research participants will change every few months during these projects. Be sure to stay apprised of these changes. Remote staff who have parking questions should read the FAQ.
- Bus Service | Monday-Friday, 5 a.m.-8 p.m. | University Transit Service’s Purple Line bus will run from the John Paul Jones Arena Garage to Fontaine Research Park. Details. After-hours shuttle service is available 8 p.m.-5 a.m., Monday through Friday. Please use the TransLoc app to request an on-demand ride.
- Health System Transit Service | Monday-Friday, 7 a.m.-6 p.m. | Health System Transit Fontaine Research Park shuttle operates on a continuous, 15-minute route service from University Hospital to Fontaine Research Park. Details. After-hours pick-up service is available 6-10 p.m., Monday-Friday, by calling 434.982.1600.
- Golf Carts | 7:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m. | Six RMC Events-staffed golf carts will assist visitors and team members with transportation at Fontaine Research Park. The carts are continuously moving throughout the park to pick up passengers. If you need assistance, wave them down.
- Food Trucks | Monday-Friday, 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m. | 560 Ray C. Hunt Drive | Two food trucks — Dumplings and Sombreros — are stationed at Fontaine Research Park. Credit and debit cards accepted.

Construction Impacts on Emmet/Ivy Garage
June 1-2 | The Emmet/Ivy Garage and Rothery Road will close at 5 a.m. Saturday, June 1, and reopen at 10 p.m. Sunday, June 2. Sidewalks on the east and west side of Rothery Road will close at this time. Additionally, the sidewalks on the north side of Ivy Road — from Copeley Road to the UTS Blue Line bus stop — will remain closed. This sidewalk closure will remain in place until the completion of the Karsh Institute of Democracy, anticipated for Q3 2025. The pedestrian route of the south side of Ivy Road will remain open. During this time, alternate parking is available in the 11th Street Parking Garage (Level D and above only) or in the South Garage on Crispell Drive.
New Check Request and Emergency Payment Submission Form
Effective Monday, June 3 | Accounts Payable (AP) will launch a new form to streamline Check Requests and Emergency Payments submissions. This form, integrated with the AP system, enables shorter processing times for payments and the ability to track these requests.
- Using the form | Going forward, please submit all requests using this new AP Invoice Request Form. Note: it must be fully completed for the invoice to be processed; incomplete submissions may result in processing delays. AP has prepared a Quick Reference Guide to assist with completing and submitting the form.
- Effective Monday, June 3 | Please begin submitting all Check Requests (formerly demand payments), Emergency Payment Requests, and any other non-standard, non-current invoices through the new submission form. The existing process for standard PO invoices remains the same.
- Issues or questions? | Email RHEALTHAP@uvahealth.org.
Testing the Emergency Notification System
Tuesday, June 4 | 10:50-11 a.m. | The University will test all components of its emergency notification system. When the test is over, a “test complete” message will be issued. UVA’s siren and public address system will be included in the test. For details, refer to the May 28 email from Jennifer (J.J.) Wagner Davis, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, and Timothy J. Longo Sr., Associate Vice President for Safety and Security and Chief of Police. Questions? 'I Could Not Imagine a More Wonderful Care Team’ | Kudos for Our UVA Health Colleagues
To provide the best possible service and care for our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their recent healthcare experience. Below is a small selection of recent feedback praising our outstanding team members:
- “Dr. Grant Robinson was absolutely amazing! He was very kind, informative, patient, and gentle. He gave me suggestions about future treatment and verbiage to use when I followed up with my primary care physician. He made me and my mom feel we were seen, heard, and valued. What a great doctor! He's one of the best!”
- “The front desk professionals are very easy to work with and all have a smile while doing their work.”
- “I could not imagine a more wonderful care team. Every step of the way I was amazed by each staff member's thoughtfulness, kindness, warmth, and unmatched skill. The nurses and physicians took time to explain the procedure and made me feel genuinely cared for in every possible way. The anesthesiologist was so perceptive and cheerful, she even noticed that I looked cold and brought me a second warm blanket. Dr. Behm was knowledgeable, compassionate, and very thorough, both in learning my clinical history and in his explanation of findings on the endoscopy/potential etiology underlying my symptoms. I felt truly cared for by each care-team member — their extraordinary bedside manner and genuine dedication to their patients showed me that, while illness is often not in our control, the humanity with which we care for one another is. And I knew that I was in very capable and kind hands.”
- “The coordination of the Hand Clinic staff was truly excellent. Each and everyone — from the receptionist, to the nurse, to Dr. Hasselbrook, and Dr. Froelick — resulted in me having my concerns addressed and resolved in an impressive amount of time. I had their 100% attention, and I left with a smile.”
Thanks to all team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care.

Complete the three simple steps outlined on Connect by Wednesday, June 5, and you’ll be entered to win UVA Health-branded Stanley tumblers and jackets!

‘Collective Impact’
As part of the 2024 UVA Health Children's Week of Giving, the Cares for Kids Radiothon raised more than $82,091 through five radio stations — broadcasting inspiring stories from our patients’ families, child life specialists, and hospital leaders. This was the first Cares for Kids Radiothon since the pandemic that featured a live phone bank staffed by local volunteers. It aired for two days on Charlottesville Radio Group’s 97.5 3WV (pictured: DJ “Highway” John Spangler); Z95.1; 106.1 The Corner WCNR; C-Ville Country 92.7; and Newsradio WINA 98.9FM and 1070AM.
The radiothon supported several initiatives, including:
- Expansion of the neonatal intensive care unit and pediatric intensive care unit.
- Family-centered care program, which includes helping families with unexpected expenses during their child’s hospital stay.
- Launch later this year of the UVA Health Children's Neurodevelopmental and Behavioral Care clinic in Albemarle County in partnership with Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital.
- UVA Health Children’s pediatric cardiology program and pediatric cancer program.
“Week of Giving featuring the Cares for Kids Radiothon is a unique time for families, friends, and our surrounding communities to come together to make a collective impact on the smallest patients at UVA Health,” says Erin Chandler, UVA Health Associate Director of Development, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and Corporate Philanthropy.
Sponsors included Children’s Hospital Advisory Board, Dairy Market, Crutchfield, Flow Automotive, Children’s Dentistry of Charlottesville, Hunter Wyant Insurance, The Forum Hotel, Birch & Bloom, Rent-A-Center, Shenanigans, and Wegmans
This year’s overall UVA Health Children’s Week of Giving fundraising total was $110,634 — thanks to the 250 donations, 29 volunteers, patients and families, and UVA Health team members who made it all possible!

'Positive and Professional’ | Kudos for Our UVA Health Colleagues
To provide the best possible service and care for our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their recent healthcare experience. Below is a small selection of recent feedback praising our outstanding team members:
- “Dr. Burke and Dr. Su explained everything well. Dr. Muse made me feel safe and comfortable. Nurses Cia and Liz were great! Lesa, who helped us to the car, was so positive and professional.”
- “I immensely thank Dr. Jeanetta W. Frye and the team of nurses or assistants for such a pleasant experience. I felt very safe in their work — thousands of thanks and blessings.”
- “Jenn was my nurse in post op. She went above and beyond to make sure I was comfortable. She was extremely concerned about my comfort and safety when I went home. She was a pleasure!”
- “The front desk personnel were sanitizing the front desk when I arrived. The ladies were extraordinary. I left my cellphone at home and I needed to text my daughter to tell her that I arrived at the physician’s office safely. One of the ladies let me use the phone to call her. They were both very nice and helpful.”
Thanks to all our team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care.

Appreciation
'An Incredibly Remarkable Human Being’ | Kudos for Our UVA Health Colleagues
To provide the best possible service and care for our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their recent healthcare experience. Below is a small selection of recent feedback praising our outstanding team members:
- “The doctors made excellent decisions pertaining to my care. They scanned my leg and noted the blood clot wasn't there — but when my chest was scanned, a blood clot was found in my right lung. I feel that if it wasn't for highly skilled and personable caregivers, I wouldn't be living today!”
- “My chances of making it were in Dr. Catalino's hands. I'm glad to know he actually cares about his patients. He came to see me in the hospital every day to check on me and see how I was recovering. I would recommend him to anyone and everyone. He's an incredibly remarkable human being.”
- “Laura was friendly and professional. Her bedside manner was wonderful. She went the extra mile to make me comfortable; the warm blanket, supports for my arms, and music were nice touches, as were her frequent check-ins with me to ensure my comfort.”
This comment was recently shared with the Patient Experience Office:
- “From the time I darkened the doors of the Hand Center to when I left, it has been a remarkably positive and happy experience. I am deeply grateful for my ‘new’ thumbs and the skill and experience that allowed that to happen. Dr. Chhabra has created an exceptional team of kind, thoughtful, and professional people. Only one thing — I wish the doc had been there for my ‘exit interview,’ so I could have given him a big hug. Alas, he missed out because I don’t have any more thumbs to dedicate to the Hand Center.”
Thanks to all our team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care.

UVA Health to Purchase Piedmont Family Practice
K. Craig Kent, MD, CEO, UVA Health, EVP of Health Affairs, University of Virginia, and Erik Shannon, CEO, UVA Community Health, have announced that UVA Health has completed the agreement to acquire Piedmont Family Practice in Warrenton, Virginia. “Providing personalized, quality healthcare is a key shared value of both organizations and was an important factor when Piedmont Family Practice leadership chose UVA Health for their partner. We anticipate closing in late summer 2024. Piedmont Family Practice will align under the UVA Community Health Medical Group portfolio of UVA Health.”
“Piedmont Family Practice is a well-established and respected group of healthcare providers in the Warrenton community, serving the area since 1993, and the largest primary care practice in Warrenton. This summer we will welcome their approximately 90 team members, including seven physicians, 17 advanced practice providers, a certified diabetic educator, and a registered dietitian to the UVA Health team. This will result in substantial growth of the number of UVA Community Health Medical Group primary care providers.” For details, read their message on KnowledgeLink or see the press release.

Shout Out to Our Researchers!
While many at UVA Health deliver care to our patients or educate students about the delivery of such care, our colleagues conducting research shape the medicine we deliver tomorrow — and how we deliver it. Recent examples:
- Stopping HIV Transmission | A research team with UVA’s Thaler Center for AIDS and Human Retrovirus Research that included Patrick Jackson, MD (pictured); David Rekosh, PhD; and Marie-Louise Hammarskjöld, MD, PhD, identified a novel factor in HIV transmission that could lead to new ways to prevent HIV’s spread.
- Promising Heart Drug | Researcher Jeffrey J. Saucerman, PhD, and former student Anders R. Nelson, PhD, combined machine learning and human learning to identify a promising drug to treat harmful heart fibrosis (scarring). Their innovative approach could lead to new treatments for many other diseases.
- Atherosclerosis Insights | Researchers led by Mete Civelek, PhD, found important answers about strokes, heart attacks, and cardiovascular diseases in the biological glue our bodies create to protect us from them.
- Battling Acute Myeloid Leukemia | A team that included UVA Cancer Center’s B. Bishal Paudel, PhD; Kevin A. Janes, PhD; and Thomas P. Loughran Jr., MD, developed a new way to identify high-risk patients with acute myeloid leukemia, one of the most common blood cancers. Their work could lead to more tailored treatments and improved patient outcomes.
- Migraines in Women | Doctors may be able to develop new treatments for migraines and chronic pain in women by targeting receptors in the brain that help regulate their fertility, research from Jaideep Kapur, MD, PhD; Suchitra Joshi, MSc, PhD; and their collaborators suggests. Dr. Kapur is co-director of the UVA Brain Institute.
This is only a sampling of the research that occurs here daily. (More can be found in the UVA Health Newsroom.) We’re grateful to these team members and to all who expand our knowledge of medical science. Thank you, researchers!

UVA Health Team Members Take Center Stage in Advertising Campaign
“Driven to Bring Hope to Life” is the theme of UVA Health’s recently launched statewide advertising campaign, but it’s the health system’s own researchers, providers, and nurses who bring this concept to life on air, on screen, and in print. More than 40(!) team members lent their time and talent to multiple campaign production shoots that ultimately yielded four television commercials and dozens of billboards, print, radio, and social media ads that will be seen by millions of Virginians across the Commonwealth.
Connect talked to the cast of the “Driven to Bring Hope to Life” campaign and shared some of their stories, insights, and a few laughs. The article also includes a complete cast list. On behalf of the health system, UVA Health Strategic Marketing and Communications is incredibly grateful to these team members and everyone who played a role in producing this inspiring campaign!
'The Smiles Were Warm and Comforting’ | Kudos for Our UVA Health Colleagues
To provide the best possible service and care for our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their recent healthcare experience. Below is a small selection of recent feedback praising our outstanding team members:
- “They took good care of me. The smiles were warm and comforting. They were also very thoughtful and answered any questions my husband had as well. Thank you for taking care of us.”
- “Everything went really well and the staff were great. I specifically want to note that the food delivery gentleman, Filbert, always made my day and I really appreciated his wonderful spirit.”
- “Both the receptionist and ultrasound tech were friendly and professional. The ultrasound tech could tell I was anxious, and made a point to ease my anxiety and make me smile.”
- “Dr. Pinkerton and team are A++. Strong communication, positive dialogue. Suggestions are proactive, guidance is clear and precise. For me, I am grateful to be cared for by Dr. Pinkerton. I like her smile.”
Thanks to all our team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care.

Spark Innovation Competition Outcomes
Dave Kashatus, PhD, Spark Initiative Lead, has announced the semifinalists in the second annual UVA Health Spark Innovation Competition. This year’s competition focused on improving the research environment.
The Spark Innovation Competition was established in 2022 to leverage the wisdom, energy, and dedication of UVA Health team members who are invited to submit ideas that could bring positive change to the culture of UVA Health. The competition was born out of our broader culture transformation and is one of the many initiatives aimed at improving the daily lives of our team members.
319 ideas were received from individuals in over 80 different areas of the health system. “Thanks to you, the response to this year’s competition has grown since this program launched several years ago. Together, we are truly leveraging the knowledge, enthusiasm, and creativity of our team members to bring positive change to the organization’s culture,” says Dr. Kashatus.
