Cultivating Healthy Communities
UVA Health has allocated nearly $265,000 in grant funding to support 42 nonprofit organizations. Of these grants, 24 are designated for the Prince William Health District and 18 for the Rappahannock-Rapidan Health District. These funds are aimed at supporting our communities' most vulnerable populations — reflecting our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and addressing healthcare workforce development.
Recipients have demonstrated unwavering commitment to addressing community needs identified in a 2022-24 health needs assessment. Focus areas include mental health, behavioral health, substance use — and chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and obesity.
“One of our main goals in the 10-year strategic plan is to cultivate healthy communities and belonging for all,” explains says Michelle Strider, RN, MBA, CPHQ, Chief Nursing Officer for UVA Health’s community medical centers and clinics in Northern Virginia and Culpeper. “Our grant partners are instrumental in supporting that mission.” Learn more on Connect.

Feel Good Friday: Celebrating National APP Week
UVA Health is proud to have more than 600 advanced practice providers (APP) elevating the fields of medicine and nursing to ensure our patients and communities receive quick access, safe, high-quality, evidence-based care. Below are some kind and encouraging words about a few of our outstanding APPs.
- Min-Hee Kang, NP | “Simply an outstanding nurse practitioner. I am very impressed with her skillset and her very comfortable conversational style. She is also an excellent listener and diagnostician. I really appreciate all her advice and counsel which has been 100% on target. Dr. Darby is very fortunate to have her as his main nurse practitioner and she is clearly an asset to the Heart and Vascular Clinic.”
- Madison Murray, PA | “Fantastic — extremely thorough, great clinical bedside manner, asks the right questions to find the true origin of the problem, and provides great resources for learning more. We should all be so lucky to have such care in a primary care physician assistant.”
- Melody Noble, NP | “Absolutely incredible. My oncologist — who was out for maternity leave during a good portion of my chemo care — couldn't have left me in any better care. Melody is caring and listens to my concerns and needs always. I never feel like I am being rushed during my visit.”
- Michelle Proffitt, NP | “Outstanding! She looked over my chart before seeing me. Her knowledge of my history from my chart shows she is an excellent nurse practitioner and would be an asset to any practice. I would hire her if I worked in the medical field. She is caring, compassionate, and loves what she does, and it shows through and through.”
- Matthew Thomas, GC | “Exceptional and highly professional, and I was very impressed with the experience he provided. He was a great listener and made valuable suggestions. I really felt that I was being heard. I was made comfortable during the entire appointment and blood draw. I'd like to commend Matthew Thomas for reviewing my message in my health chart and nurse Q&A by phone prior to my appointment.”
- Evan Turnbull, PA | “Amazing physician assistant who listens to me when I have concerns regarding my pain levels; and mobility in my daily life; the overall care during my post-op is truly appreciated. I feel as though I'm being heard during my appointments with him and the daily goals we set for myself are effective in ensuring I have a successful recovery.”
If you haven’t yet, we hope you’ll reach out to an APP in your department and acknowledge them for the value they provide to our institution and patients.

Hoos on the Field?
It’s Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and we were honored and touched to watch UVA athletes and fans welcome two UVA Health Children’s patients, their families, and their care teams during a recent football game.
Six-year-old Blakeleigh Thompson was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia in April 2023. She is now in remission but still receives maintenance chemotherapy. Her care team loves the way she greets them at every visit with a hug and a smile, and they are so impressed by her bravery and strength.
15-year-old Lucas Frank was a three-sport athlete and the starting center for his high school football team before his T-Cell leukemia diagnosis. He’s also now in remission, and although he gets maintenance chemotherapy, recently he was cleared to play baseball for the first time since his diagnosis. He hopes to return to football soon.

‘She Saved the Day!’ | Kudos for Our UVA Health Colleagues
To best serve our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their healthcare experience. Below is a selection of feedback praising our team members:
- “They had issues finding a vein for an IV, and all the staff were super helpful and nice — but the anesthesiologist named Lisa Igbani, MD, was the absolute best at having patience, and was just so calm and relaxed. And she actually found a vein, so she made it all better. I had to give her a hug before I left, because I honestly thought the procedure wasn't going to happen at all — but she saved the day!”
- “Ollie served my meals and is such a ray of sunshine that I looked forward to seeing him. McKenzie or Mac was one of my nurses and made me feel like family. She is very knowledgeable and made sure I understood what the doctors ordered and why. Excellent nurse. The night I came to 4 North, Rachel called a sepsis alert and may well have saved my life. She and her team were fast and efficient. A wonderful caring group of people.”
- “This was by far the easiest allergy visit my child has had and that was due to the patience and kindness of our nurse. She took time to explain each step of the testing process and answered my anxious child's many questions. She made what has, historically, been a very stressful and difficult day for him into a calm and successful experience.”
- “I rely on Ellen's wisdom understanding, listening skills, knowledge, and flexibility. She listens well. I leave an appointment feeling back on track and more optimistic about my condition. I rejoin the fight knowing I have the very best of care and determined to come back in a few months' time with something positive to demonstrate to her.”
Thank you to all team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care!

National Physician Suicide Awareness Day
Tuesday, Sept. 17 | According to NPSADay.org, physicians have one of the highest suicide rates of any profession. More than half of physicians know a physician who has either considered, attempted or died by suicide in their career. It’s estimated that one million Americans lose their physician to suicide each year. We can all help prevent physician suicide.
While physician suicide was a crisis long before COVID-19, the demands of the pandemic have created a sense of urgency to better support physicians’ mental health and wellbeing.
National Physician Suicide Awareness Day is a reminder and call to action. With your help, every day we can make time to talk — and to act — so physicians’ struggles don’t become mental health emergencies. We can all help prevent physician suicide by learning the signs, starting the conversations, removing intrusive mental health questions from applications and sharing the resources that can help those in distress seek mental healthcare. Flu No More in ‘24 — 2024 Team Member Flu Vaccination Program
UVA Health is preparing for the arrival of flu season, and we’re excited to announce this year’s flu vaccination initiative: Flu No More in ‘24.
Getting influenza/flu vaccination is the best way to prevent flu and its complications. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend annual flu vaccination for everyone age six months or older. Flu vaccination can lower your risk of getting flu, and it also can lower the risk of having serious illness from flu. By getting vaccinated, you are also protecting people around you, including those who are more vulnerable to serious flu illness, including babies and young children, older people, and people with certain chronic health conditions. Read more about the vaccination program and FAQs on Connect.

Appreciation
‘Treated With Dignity and Respect’ | Kudos for Our UVA Health Colleagues
To best serve our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their healthcare experience. Below is a selection of feedback praising our team members:
- “I was so impressed with this hospital. When I went back to be prepped for surgery, I had the nicest nurse that I have ever had in a medical facility. She treated me as if I were the only patient in the facility. Her name was Susan, and she is absolutely fantastic. And during my recovery, I had the pleasure of having another fantastic nurse, and her name was Miah. I am so impressed with the UVA Health surgery department, where you are treated with dignity and respect at all times.”
- “Dr. Wilson is a life-giver. Her expertise, knowledge, personal concerns, and the joy she clearly feels for her practice are going to be sorely missed upon her retirement. She truly has given me extraordinary care and I am so grateful. Thank you!”
- “I usually bring a book to my appointments (although I usually don't get to read very long), and Dr. Yarboro actually remembered what book I had been reading at the previous visit — and asked about it. It certainly made me feel recognized as an individual and not just another generic clinical problem.”
- “The entire visit was excellent. The doctor (John Harrison) was thorough and detailed in explaining answers to my questions and concerns prompting my appointment. He was friendly, open to discussion and examination of my issues, articulate, and clearly interested in me. He gave me the confidence in knowing that I was in the right medical practice. I would recommend anyone to seek his five-star professionalism.”
Thank you to all team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care!

Years Ahead
America’s Essential Hospitals is recognizing member hospitals and health systems for successful projects to improve the quality of care and population health. It’s highlighting UVA Health’s Interactive Health Monitoring (IHM), a remote patient monitoring and care coordination program to reduce readmission rates among our sickest patients and those with the highest social needs.
Inpatient discharges — and pediatric, ambulatory, and emergency department patients — receive no-cost tablet computers and cellular hub patient kits with condition-specific peripherals to monitor vital signs. IHM aims to improve healthcare outcomes; manage patient care where the patient lives, including on the streets and in deeply rural areas; and target underserved patient populations.
In 2017, UVA Health had an 18.1% readmission rate among our sickest and highest-risk patient populations; from 2020 to the present, overall readmission rates have ranged from 7.3 to 9.3%. UVA Health also has taught systems in southwest Virginia how to provide this service for their patients.
“UVA Health is years ahead of many other health systems due to our belief in the power of innovative technology and programs that deliver care beyond hospital walls. Today, not only do we provide high quality patient care through our IHM program, we’ve expanded into other areas where remote patient monitoring is a common thread that positively impacts the behavioral utilization of services. The credit for this recognition all goes to my IHM program leader Jared McComb, our case management, and clinician team,” says Novella Thompson, MBA, MA, ALM-C, FACHE, Administrator, Population Health.

Patient Care Change to Complete Blood Count Orders Coming Sept. 10
Currently, six unique Complete Blood Count (CBC) lab orders specific to various clinic locations exist in Epic (e.g., CBC WITH DIFF, RIVERSIDE [LAB6274]). As part of the Sept. 10 Epic bundle update, these location-specific orders will no longer appear in order sets, preference lists, or treatment plans and care teams should transition to ordering CBC WITH DIFFERENTIAL [LAB293], a universal CBC order that works across all UVA Health locations.
On Sept. 10, the Epic team will run an order replacer activity to update active, outpatient site-specific CBCs to LAB293. This activity will capture most but not all existing orders (e.g., signed, held, etc.); therefore, prescribing teams are asked to check to ensure that existing orders have been updated to LAB293. To support a smooth transition, location-specific CBC orders will not be deactivated until mid-October, though care teams should begin using LAB293 on Sept. 10. Please see the ELL tip sheet for additional information and contact Carl Lake, point of care testing lead, with questions.

Patient Care

‘Life Changing and Transformative’ | Kudos for Our UVA Health Colleagues
To best serve our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their healthcare experience. Below is a selection of feedback praising our team members:
- “I am a retired critical care and clinical research RN who worked at [another institution] for 33 years. I've had several surgeries through the years and this experience was by far the best I've ever had! Thank you for your excellence!”
- “The overall visit was excellent, well-coordinated, and carried out extremely well. The scheduling staff were very helpful and patient, since my trip to the hospital was emergent, delayed, and late in the day on a Friday. The nursing staff were amazingly supportive from the start through my surgery and discharge the following day. Dr. Mangram and his surgical staff were outstanding, providing excellent information about the procedures. All aspects of my visit, surgery, and post-op were excellent. The quality and extent of information provided far exceeded my expectations and that of my wife. Follow-up has been regular, frequent, and helpful.”
- “My experience at the UVA Health Transplant Center has been life changing and transformative. I am a better person after receiving care from the entire team, from check-in through leaving the building.”
Thank you to all team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care!

Celebrate National CNS Recognition Week
Sept. 1-7 is National Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) Week. This year’s theme, "Innovate," highlights the transformative impact CNSs have on healthcare through their leadership, expertise, and innovation. With nearly 90,000 CNSs across North America, we proudly acknowledge their critical role in enhancing patient care, advancing nursing practice, and improving health systems.
CNSs, as advanced practice registered nurses, excel in integrating care across three key areas: patient, nurse, and system. Their specialized education and clinical skills enable them to tackle complex health challenges and drive evidence-based improvements in care delivery. They lead initiatives that improve patient outcomes and shape the future of nursing practice through clinical education, technology integration, and evidence-based practice. Their progressive Advanced Practice Provider-CNS model is setting new standards, influencing healthcare organizations nationwide, and serving as a benchmark for achieving exceptional patient outcomes.
Join us in celebrating our outstanding CNSs advancing healthcare and empowering change in our communities. Their dedication and expertise are vital to the success of our healthcare system.
