Held in the spring of 2025, the symposium brought together 79 total attendees, including 29 virtual participants, and featured a comprehensive and dynamic agenda that highlighted the breadth and depth of expertise across UVA’s medical community.
A Multi-Disciplinary Approach
The symposium featured 16 distinguished speakers, including faculty and specialists from:
- Vascular Medicine
- Medical Genetics
- Radiology & Interventional Radiology
- Structural Heart
- Cardiac Surgery
- Vascular Surgery
- Advanced Practice Providers (APPs)
- Vascular Fellows
This diverse lineup fostered an enriching, multi-faceted perspective on aortic disease, treatment, and innovation.
Aortic Anatomy in Focus
The event was divided into two focused sessions:
- Session One centered on the ascending aorta.
- Session Two covered the descending thoracic and thoracoabdominal aorta.
Through case presentations, cutting-edge research, and interdepartmental dialogue, participants deepened their understanding of complex aortic pathology and emerging therapies.
Industry Collaboration and Support
The symposium also welcomed the participation of seven industry partners in its exhibits program, offering attendees insight into the latest technologies and tools shaping the field. Generous educational grants from Edwards Lifesciences and Gore & Associates helped make this valuable gathering possible.
Building Bridges
One of the most meaningful outcomes of the symposium was the strengthened collaboration across disciplines, laying the groundwork for more integrated care pathways and research efforts at UVA and beyond.
A Human Perspective
The event concluded on an inspiring note with a presentation from Eileen Novins of the Marfan Foundation, who shared the organization’s mission and initiatives. Attendees also heard from Grace Barnhart, who offered a moving patient and volunteer perspective, underscoring the human impact behind every clinical and academic effort.
Looking Ahead
With an eye on continued growth and outreach, plans are already underway for a patient-focused symposium in 2026, in partnership with the Marfan Foundation. Additionally, May 30, 2026 has been announced as the date for the 2nd Annual UVA Aortic Symposium — a testament to the success and momentum of this inaugural event.
