‘We Wouldn’t Have Survived Without Her That Day!’

Learn how Christine Smith, RN, "jumped right in" where she was critically needed.

The Nursing Professional Governance Organization (NPGO) honors up to two UVA Health University Medical Center nurses each month with a DAISY Award. Associate Chief Nursing Officer Veronica Brill, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, and DAISY Award Committee Vice Chair Crystal Richard, MSN, RN, CCRN, surprised Christine Smith, RN, Staffing Resource Office, with the award.

Catherine Denton and Tonya Wrenn nominated Christine:

"Christine came down to the ED as support to help out in our trauma section on a particularly busy day when we were critically understaffed in trauma. She jumped right in and was the best team player — helping with everything from cleaning up patients to transporting critical care intubated patients to CT.

"Christine brought an incredible attitude and broad knowledge base to our team that day. Her experience as a former ED nurse helped her fit right in — and her skills and knowledge shined with some particularly complex and critical patients first thing in the morning. We kept telling Christine we wouldn't have survived without her that day — it's so true!

"An extra set of hands is crucial — and to get an extra set with ED experience and a positive attitude is a bonus. We were so happy to have Christine in the ED. She truly made a difference for our patients and our staff that day. Thank you for being a great team player and for your obvious stellar clinical expertise! You fit right in!"

Know a Fabulous Nurse?
"DAISY" stands for "Diseases Attacking the Immune System." The DAISY Award was established by The DAISY Foundation in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at the age of only 33 of an autoimmune disease. The Barnes Family was awestruck by the clinical skills, caring, and compassion of his nurses, so they created this national award to thank nurses everywhere.

At UVA Health University Medical Center — patients or their families, visitors, and team members may submit a DAISY Award nomination
