Webb Receives “Top Healthcare Professionals Under 40” Award
Congratulations to Cameron Webb, MD, JD, Director of Health Policy and Equity,Assistant Professor of Medicine, Assistant Professor of Public Health Sciences, on being a recipient of the “Top Healthcare Professionals Under 40” award by the National Medical Association (NMA). The award is conferred annually upon four individuals “of national and international stature whose efforts significantly benefit health and medicine.”
According to its site, the NMA is “the collective voice of African American physicians and the leading force for parity and justice in medicine and the elimination of disparities in health. … [it is] the largest and oldest national organization representing African American physicians and their patients in the United States.”
Nominator Krystilyn Washington, MD, shared this:
I first met Dr. Webb when I was a first-year undergraduate student at the University of Virginia and he was a fourth year. Even as an undergraduate student he was passionate about the health of vulnerable populations and aware of the social determinants of health, made evident by participating in the living wage campaign at UVA. These early passions drove his career choice to go into medicine and law. During medical school he was the national president of the Student National Medical Association and placed a nationwide highlight on health inequities by organizing a coast-to-coast tour for health equity. Even with his busy schedule, Dr. Cameron Webb continues to mentor students and other medical professionals. He delivers culturally sensitive and evidence-based care to his patients, advocates for them, and plays an active role in changing health policy and delivery. Dr. B. Cameron Webb is the current and future face of medicine and is well deserving of this award.
When asked how he felt to be named one of the Top Healthcare Professionals Under 40, Webb said, “It’s a huge honor. The rich and proud history and the legacy of the NMA — an organization going into its 125th year — are both a big part of what makes this so special to me.”
Webb says he was immediately humbled by the recognition because “I know the quality and the impact that defines the work my peers and colleagues around the country are doing. To be recognized in this way is special, because of how much respect I have for them.”
While Webb is the recipient of the award, he is quick to praise colleagues and says he could not do this alone. “This award is a testament to the support that I have received here at UVA from [School of Medicine] Dean Wilkes and from my department chairs, Ruth Bernheim and Mitch Rosner. They have been amazing to work with, and they have always given me the space to be creative and innovative in my work here at the University. Building on my own professional background, they have really facilitated my ability to make an impact because they’ve always enabled me to think and to act outside of the box, and to pursue my interests passionately. I’m lucky to have their support in this early phase of my career.”
Webb is a physician and health justice advocate with leadership experiences in clinical medicine, federal and state government, policy and public health research, the non-profit sector and community engagement. He is known for his expertise in health policy and health equity, and for creating innovative initiatives to improve health, advance knowledge, and facilitate collective impact. Webb is a graduate of the Wake Forest School of Medicine and Loyola University Chicago School of Law. He completed his internal medicine residency at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell. In his early but accomplished career he served as a White House Fellow on the Domestic Policy Council and in the Office of Cabinet Affairs. He also served as Founder and Chief Executive Office for EquityRx, Inc, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization focused on developing community-based health equity strategies. At UVA, he leads the development of research initiatives focused on health policy and equity, focusing on research to impact health outcomes for vulnerable populations for the School of Medicine. He has numerous publications and sits on the board of directors for multiple organizations, such as Doctors for America. Most recently, Webb launched a campaign to run for U.S. Congress in Virginia’s Fifth Congressional District.
In July, Webb was honored with the award at NMA’s Annual Convention and Scientific Assembly in Honolulu, HI.
