The UVA Medical Center Inclement Weather Incident Management Team is actively monitoring the weather forecast. When the Medical Center modifies operations for inclement weather, we communicate this through multiple channels. We announce the decision as early as possible to give members of our community time to plan:

• Mass email

• Direct communication from your supervisor

How Do We Decide?

A team of Medical Center officials closely monitors developing weather conditions and assesses the expected impact to our patients, staff, and facilities.

Weather is unpredictable. Although we base our schedule decisions on the best available information, our team members come from a wide geographic area where road and weather conditions can change quickly and vary greatly.

Safety Tips

• Develop an emergency plan and maintain an emergency kit (“go-kit”).
• Watch out for slips, trips, and falls. Remember that roads and walkways can never be completely cleared of slick spots. 
• Don’t forget your winter weather attire: boots, gloves, and a hat. Dressing in layers will also help retain heat.

Transportation

• Plan ahead and add extra time for safe travel. View road conditions from the Virginia Department of Transportation’s Virginia 511 site and mobile app.
• For the status of University Transit Buses (UTS):
  • Monitor your email for notices from UTS regarding changes to parking locations.
  • Visit the UTS website for current information.
  • Download the Transloc app to your mobile device.

Weather

• UVA Medical Center makes its decisions based on the forecast from the National Weather Service.

Human Resources

• The University has assigned an emergency event status to all Academic Division and UVA Health employees: “designated” or “non-designated.”
  • Team members should refer to HR Policy 510, Modified Medical Center Operations, and discuss questions with their supervisor.
