On Oct. 1, 2024, UVA Health University Medical Center submitted the 2024 Magnet document to be reviewed by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Magnet Recognition Program® as a first step in our redesignation. “This recognition is an honor reserved for organizations that demonstrate commitment to transformational leadership, structural empowerment, exemplary professional practice, and new knowledge and innovation,” says UVA Health University Medical Center Chief Nursing Officer Kathy Baker, PhD, RN, NE-BC. “As a result, Magnet organizations serve their patients at the highest level by achieving exemplary performance in nurse-sensitive patient outcomes.”

There are only 613 Magnet-designated organizations across the world; just 9.7% of hospitals in the United States have Magnet designation. UVA Health University Medical Center was previously designated in 2006, 2015, and 2020.

“Magnet is important not just as a reward or an achievement, but also as a validation that nursing excellence is a part of who we are as a professional nursing team,” says Baker. “Our commitment to outstanding care delivery — represented by the Magnet model — enables us to embrace our professional practice model.”

The document showcases examples of nursing’s expert caring, quality achievement, innovation, empowered leaders, and lifelong learning tenets — representing the amazing care provided for our patients and families — and examples of how UVA Health University Medical Center nurses “live” the theoretical framework of relationship-based care.

The 2024 Magnet document by the numbers:

• 91 required standards
• 735 pages of written narrative 
• 436 team members featured in the narratives 
• 2,704 pages of supporting evidence
• 418 graphs 

“As you read our document, I hope you will feel as much pride in the legacy of nursing excellence at UVA Health as I do,” says Baker.

Preparations are underway in the next few months to welcome Magnet appraisers for a site visit in spring 2025.
