‘She’s Going to Stay Forever in Our Family’s Hearts!’
Learn how UVA Health nurse Addison Hawpe "went above and beyond the call of duty" to take care of a mother and baby during a "really stressful time."
The Nursing Professional Governance Organization (NPGO) honors up to two UVA Health University Medical Center nurses each month with a DAISY Award. Associate Chief Nursing Officer Karin Skeen, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, and DAISY Award Committee Chair Crystal Richard, MSN, RN, CCRN, surprised Addison Hawpe, BSN, RN, 7 Acute, with an award.
A patient's family member nominated Hawpe:
"Where do I begin? Addison has been like family for us during a really stressful time. My son was born with a congenital heart defect ... and was operated on at UVA Health. While we were in the recovery ward awaiting his discharge, Addison helped us maintain hope and joy in a difficult time.
"My son was one-month-old and he wouldn't be photographed on the milestone blanket my toddler had used at birth. Addison created a little 'One Month' laminated sign and found a donated yarn blanket and helped us organize a small photo shoot for his one month birthday.
"She also spotted a onesie I had by my personal belongings that I wanted to put on my baby (it was a sentimental item) but I had anxiety about dressing him with all the wires. Well, when I went back the following morning, she surprised me with him wearing his onesie!!!
"She would hold and comfort my son so that I could not feel guilty leaving for the Ronald McDonald House after spending 12 hours a day by my son's bedside. She was intuitive to my baby's needs, often affirmed what I was feeling, and made me feel safe listening to my own intuition about his medical needs.
"Finally, Addison surprised me with some art, using my son's footprint, that just absolutely lifted me up! It had a quote on it that I frequently said to my son — which she didn't even know about!
"Addison went above and beyond the call of duty. She's going to stay forever in our family's hearts!"
Know a Fabulous Nurse?
"DAISY" stands for "Diseases Attacking the Immune System." The DAISY Award was established by The DAISY Foundation in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at the age of only 33 of an autoimmune disease. The Barnes Family was awestruck by the clinical skills, caring, and compassion of his nurses, so they created this national award to thank nurses everywhere.
At UVA Health University Medical Center — patients or their families, visitors, and team members may submit a DAISY Award nomination.
