"That's just what I needed!"

Congratulations to Terri Anderson, RN, UVA Health Cardiology, part of UVA Health Culpeper Medical Center, on earning a DAISY Award! A patient nominated Anderson for her thoughtfulness while being informative and honest — and for her advocacy for the patient’s wellbeing. 

The UVA Community Health Nursing Professional Governance Organization (NPGO) honors UVA Health Culpeper Medical Center nurses each quarter with a DAISY Award. 

Advocating for the Best Care

The patient first recounts the injury that prompted Anderson’s consideration, also noting her positive experience with other clinic team members when she first arrived. “I was scheduled for a nuclear stress test. But earlier in the day, during my usual morning walk through my neighborhood, I was in a hurry and fell, catching my toe on a piece of broken asphalt in a parking lot. There was nothing to grab, so I fell flat on the left side of my face. I managed to get home and get ready for my testing, but I arrived a little late. My husband accompanied me.

"The people who checked us in were so kind and helpful. When I met Terri, the bruising, bleeding, and swelling in my face were continuing to increase. First, she asked me many questions and prepped me to proceed with the test. Then, she paused and told me about the procedure, the need to go upstairs, the time involved in waiting, and her concern about whether I could make it through the procedure.

"With my injury in mind, she kindly suggested canceling and rescheduling the test. Initially, I felt I could do the test and my husband agreed; however, Terri waited a few more minutes and observed the increased swelling and my pain level, and again felt I needed to know more about the testing procedure. With the information she provided, I began to feel that she was right, and the test would be too much in my current state.” 

“Terri noticed my apprehension and called in the supervising nurse, and he immediately said to reschedule, so we did. Terri was so kind, caring, observing, calm, and patient-oriented.  That's just what I needed — your thoughtfulness, your knowledge of the testing procedures, your nursing experience, your putting the patient first, and your kindness. Thank you, Terri, God bless you!”

In Her Own Words

With a remarkable 43 years of nursing under her belt, Anderson reacts: “I feel very honored to receive this award. I love being a nurse and feel there is no better profession." She has been with UVA Health for 10 years and adds: “I want to continue to be the best nurse I can be and provide the care patients deserve.”

"DAISY" stands for "Diseases Attacking the Immune System." The DAISY Award was established by The DAISY Foundation in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at the age of only 33 of an autoimmune disease. The Barnes Family was awestruck by the clinical skills, caring, and compassion of his nurses, so they created this national award to thank nurses everywhere.

Patients or their family members; visitors; and team members can submit a nomination for a UVA Health Culpeper, Haymarket, Prince William Medical Center, or Medical Group nurse.
