UVA Health University Medical Center Chief Operating Officer Min Lee, MHA, MBA, and BEE Award Committee Chair Samantha Shifflett surprised Charlotte Rice, Environmental Services, UVA Health Endoscopy Monroe Lane, with a BEE (Being Excellent Everyday) Award.

Susan Gayda, BSN, RN, CGRN, nominated Rice:

"As someone new to the interim manager role, I was preparing for my first infection control and reprocessing audit for our team. I spoke with Charlotte to ensure she was informed. She was a great resource during the days leading up to the audit, drawing on what was learned from prior walkthroughs — and took action!

"I was thoroughly impressed by the initiative she demonstrated — conducting her own cleaning walkthroughs, checking expiration dates on hand sanitizers and soaps, and proactively identifying and reporting areas that needed attention. While she routinely manages these responsibilities, she truly stepped up and took extra initiative to ensure our unit was prepared. We had an excellent audit! The auditor even noted that the tops of the blanket warmers ... were spotless — a direct result of Charlotte’s attention to detail and high standards.

"Following the survey, we discovered that some areas — specifically those Charlotte doesn’t typically have access to — had dust accumulation. She immediately developed a plan to address the issue. Charlotte coordinated with the team that has access to unlock the closets and assist with moving the machines to ensure those spaces are thoroughly cleaned. She then created a plan to add the closets to a regular cleaning rotation.

"Her pride in her work and commitment to doing things right set her apart. Beyond her impressive work ethic, Charlotte is a pleasure to work with! Her dedication to maintaining a clean and safe environment does not go unnoticed and I am truly grateful to have her as part of our team!"
