How UVA Health Culpeper Medical Center DAISY Award Winner Put a Personal Touch on Patient Care for Another UVA Health Team Member
Dawn Brown "went way above and beyond to make a hospital team member and a patient feel special.”
Congratulations to Dawn Brown, MSN, RN, CMS-RN, UVA Health Culpeper Medical Center DAISY Awardee! The Surgical Services team member was nominated by Keith Brown, Culpeper Medical Center Public Safety Officer, whose uplifting interaction with Dawn occurred when he visited the medical center as a patient.
The UVA Community Health Nursing Professional Governance Organization (NPGO) honors UVA Health Culpeper Medical Center nurses each quarter with a DAISY Award.
Collegial Comfort and Post-Op Pudding
Keith recounts, “While making security patrols, I stopped by pre-op and was greeted by Dawn Brown, who assured me that my procedure would be stress-free and efficient. I joked and requested the VIP treatment package with chocolate pudding served in post-op. I reported for surgery the next day and awoke to the pleasant surprise of chocolate pudding. Still coming out of anesthesia, I laughed out loud and asked who made it. Unbeknownst to me, Nurse Brown has a reputation for the best chocolate pudding on the East Coast, called Dirt and Worms!”
Keith adds that Dawn even went out of her way to bring the pudding in for him on her day off. “Nurse Brown went way above and beyond to make a hospital team member and a patient feel special. This type of patient care is unheard of, and I am forever grateful and will never forget the experience. I departed the hospital after a successful surgery and an elevated blood sugar level. I want to make sure that Nurse Brown's unmatched customer service and patient care are recognized.”
In Her Own Words
A nurse for 35 years, Dawn has spent 28 of those years with UVA Health, and she intends to climb the Clinical Ladder to a Clinician III. She comments that she always wanted to receive a DAISY Award before retiring. Mission accomplished!
Know a Fabulous Nurse?
"DAISY" stands for "Diseases Attacking the Immune System." The DAISY Award was established by The DAISY Foundation in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at the age of only 33 of an autoimmune disease. The Barnes Family was awestruck by the clinical skills, caring, and compassion of his nurses, so they created this national award to thank nurses everywhere.
Patients or their family members; visitors; and team members can submit a nomination for a UVA Health Culpeper, Haymarket, Prince William Medical Center, or Medical Group nurse.
