Workplace Violence Prevention Month: Culture and Resilience
As we close out Workplace Violence Prevention Month — week four focuses on building a culture of safety and resilience. Creating a safe work environment is not just about responding to incidents — it’s about supporting one another, speaking up, and recognizing the efforts that contribute to a safer workplace every day.
- Speaking Up | A strong culture of safety starts with feeling empowered to speak up. Speaking up ensures that concerns are addressed early and that staff safety remains a priority. Every voice matters in creating a safer environment.
- Supporting Peers | Workplace violence does not just impact one person — it affects entire teams. Supporting one another is a key part of building resilience. A supportive team environment helps reduce stress, build confidence, and ensures no one feels like they are handling challenging situations alone.
- Recognition | Recognizing the efforts of staff who contribute to safety is an important part of sustaining a strong culture. Taking time to recognize these actions reinforces positive behaviors and shows that safety efforts are valued.
Workplace violence prevention is a shared responsibility. By speaking up, supporting one another, and recognizing the efforts of our teams — we can continue to strengthen a culture where safety comes first. Thank you for your continued commitment to keeping our workplace safe.
Donations Needed: Geri-Cart
University Medical Center Emergency Department (ED) had approximately 77,000 patient visits in 2025, with more than 20,000 of those being patients age 65 or older. Last year, a task force was formed with a focused initiative to improve outcomes and care for geriatric ED patients. One of the goals of this task force is to create a Geri-Cart to provide comfort and sensory items for elderly patients, especially those with dementia. The Geri-Cart will provide headphones, reading glasses, and “pocket talkers” to support hearing and vision. It also will provide magazines, coloring books, and crayons for stimulation — as well as fidget blankets, baby doll therapy, and aromatherapy to reduce agitation. If you are interested in donating to this initiative, visit this Amazon wish list. For more information on how you can support this vital initiative, email Dina Hood.

Appreciation
‘Made Me Feel Very Important’ | Kudos to Our UVA Health Colleagues
To best serve our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their healthcare experience. Below is a selection of feedback praising our team members:
- "My pre-op nurse, Beatrice, was amazing. I've been eagerly awaiting a survey so I could call her out. Her attentiveness, care, and demeanor were excellent, and all helped me relax before the surgery.”
- "Angel was very personable and, honestly, made the experience enjoyable. I have had a lot of tests lately and most of the technicians are all nice; however, Angel stood out. He had such a warm and kind vibe and was knowledgeable and took the time to explain things to me and make sure that I was comfortable.”
- "The staff of nurses and doctors who cared for me made me feel very important — although I know the people in the wing I was in needed of more care than me. My case was not as serious. But [the staff] made me feel just as important. My daytime nurse, Steven, was the biggest of help. I really hope he gets recognized for his compassion and care. He is truly a great nurse. I wish I could thank him more for how well he made my stay.”
Thank you to our team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care!

Workplace Violence Prevention Month: Response and Support
For week three of Workplace Violence Prevention Month, the focus is on how to respond during an incident and the support available afterward. Knowing what to do in the moment and understanding that support exists after can make a significant difference in staff safety and well-being.
What to Do During an Incident | If you are experiencing or witnessing workplace violence, your safety is the top priority. Trust your instincts. It is important to know when you need to step out and get assistance. Key actions to keep in mind:
- Remove yourself from the situation if it is unsafe to stay.
- Call for help early (Security, charge nurse, or BERT).
- Set clear boundaries using calm, direct language.
- Avoid escalating behaviors such as arguing or matching tone.
- Use team support; do not manage high-risk situations alone.
Post-Incident Support | Experiencing workplace violence can be difficult, both physically and emotionally. Support is available, and you are not expected to navigate these situations alone. Taking time to process what happened and accessing available resources is an important part of recovery.
If you or your team would like to learn more about response strategies or available resources, please reach out to Emily Schacht Shabani, MS, Workplace Violence Prevention Coordinator, or stop by one of the Friday booths mentioned in the above link. You are not alone — support is here when you need it.

To support this effort, training materials are now available within the Epic Learning Library. This includes:
- Secure Chat computer-based training
- Instructions on Secure Chat functions, such as managing groups
- Training on Haiku and Rover mobile apps
Additional materials will be added prior to go-live on May 20. Virtual Secure Chat Demos will also be available May 11-19.
We will continue to provide updates as new training becomes available.

Appreciation
‘Something Unexpectedly Magical’ | Kudos to Our UVA Health Colleagues
To best serve our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their healthcare experience. Below is a selection of feedback praising our team members:
- "The care and kindness from the nurses turned our NICU experience into something unexpectedly magical. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!”
- "The receptionists — in the front when you're checking in — are phenomenal. They're the first ones I see when I'm coming in. They always have a smile on their faces and it shows me they're happy and having a great day. Shout out to Miguel: thank you so much for all the times I needed help with getting in for labs, so that my wait time was short. His communication with the team is great. Thank you.”
- “The front desk staff is both professional and very good at making people feel at ease. I saw them adjusting their interactions to help people who were older, had hearing impairments, and had questions. The pre-op and post-op nurses are excellent, and Dr. Marcantonio and the anesthesiologist (don't remember her name) were warm, made sure I was well prepared, and comfortable throughout.”
Thank you to our team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care!

How UVA Health Community Engagement and Health Outcomes Makes a Life Changing Impact on Area Residents
Not only is “Community Engagement and Health Outcomes” a key initiative of our UVA Health strategic plan’s goal of Cultivating Healthy Communities — it’s also the name of a key office at UVA Health. And true to its name, the UVA Health Office of Community Engagement and Health Outcomes (OCEHO) has been having quite an impact on Charlottesville residents.
UVA Health Chief Community Engagement and Health Outcomes Officer Tracy M. Downs, MD, FACS, launched the Neighborhood Health program to support Charlottesville neighborhoods identified by certain matrices including a social driver of health (SDOH) model.
"Strong neighborhoods are the foundation of strong health — and community connection isn’t just good practice — it’s prevention science in action," says Dr. Downs. Read more on Connect.

Happenings
Workplace Violence Prevention Month: Recognizing the Signs
For week two of Workplace Violence Prevention Month, the focus is on recognizing early warning signs, using de-escalation techniques, and understanding behavioral flags. Identifying concerns early can help prevent situations from escalating and improve safety for both staff and patients. Common warning signs include:
- Increased agitation or restlessness
- Raised voice, yelling, or use of aggressive language
- Clenched fists, pacing, or tense body language
- Refusal of care or escalating frustration
- Sexually inappropriate comments or boundary testing
Behavioral Flags | Behavioral flags are used as a communication tool to help staff be aware of a patient’s past behaviors and potential risks. Flags are not meant to be punitive. Instead, they help ensure that all staff interacting with a patient have the information needed to provide care safely and effectively. Flags:
- Provide important context for how to approach patient care.
- Highlight triggers or patterns of behavior.
- Support proactive safety planning.

Appreciation
‘Rate it at 100!’ | Kudos to Our UVA Health Colleagues
To best serve our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their healthcare experience. Below is a selection of feedback praising our team members:
- "I entered UVA Health through the Emergency Department. They were very responsive to my need for medical attention, which I received in an expedited fashion. Dr. Dimitry Pokheashchev was fantastic in ordering a CT scan and diagnosing treatment. Fantastic, professional doctor. I have been a patient at this hospital for more than 20 years and find it to be tops in care.”
- "All-around attentive to my individual needs, but I was pleasantly surprised — specifically by how affirming staff was. As a gender-nonconforming person, I am used to being misgendered and not always receiving the most sensitive care, but all staff involved in my care contributed to me feeling affirmed. Especially, the preop nurse who asked me about my pronouns.”
- "I was only allowed to rate my experience on a scale of 1-10, but if I could, I would like to rate it at 100! My experience was excellent in every way, from beginning to end. The staff, nurses, anesthesiologists, and doctors worked as a well-oiled team. I was well informed and cared for by everyone involved. Special kudos to Dr. Volker and her fellow!”
Thank you to our team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care!

Exemplary Care and More
The UVA Health University Medical Center Heart Failure team has completed a very successful Joint Commission Heart Failure Survey with no deficiencies!
“Please join me in congratulating the Heart Failure team for their exceptional work and unwavering commitment to their patients and program,” says JoAnna Monroe, MPH, CHES, Director of Accreditation and Regulatory Standards. “The survey highlighted numerous strengths, with particular recognition of exemplary outcomes, a truly patient-centered approach, robust data support, and a highly cohesive interdisciplinary team.”
The March 13 Joint Commission Heart Failure Disease-Specific Certification survey represented the renewal of the UVA Health Heart Failure program’s two-year certification. It evaluated compliance with certification standards including clinical care processes, performance measurement, and interdisciplinary coordination for heart failure patients.
Survey activities included document review, staff interviews, and evaluation of patient care processes to confirm the program’s ongoing delivery of high-quality, evidence-based, heart failure care.
“It is a testament to the entire team,” says Terrie Edwards, MHA, FACHE, interim CEO, UVA Health University Medical Center. “Thank you to everyone who works so hard to have an excellent program all year so that we perform so well in the survey process. Congratulations!”
