Training Materials: Unified Communications

Unified Communications is UVA Health’s initiative to bring the tools we use to coordinate patient care into one connected experience within Epic. By integrating on-call scheduling, role-based team organization, secure text messaging, and mobile access through apps like Haiku, Canto, and Rover, this effort reduces the need to toggle between multiple systems and makes it easier to quickly find and message the right person.

To support this effort, training materials are now available within the Epic Learning Library. This includes:

Donations Needed: Geri-Cart

University Medical Center Emergency Department (ED) had approximately 77,000 patient visits in 2025, with more than 20,000 of those being patients age 65 or older. Last year, a task force was formed with a focused initiative to improve outcomes and care for geriatric ED patients. One of the goals of this task force is to create a Geri-Cart to provide comfort and sensory items for elderly patients, especially those with dementia. The Geri-Cart will provide headphones, reading glasses, and “pocket talkers” to support hearing and vision. It also will provide magazines, coloring books, and crayons for stimulation — as well as fidget blankets, baby doll therapy, and aromatherapy to reduce agitation. Earth Day Network marked the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970. This year’s global theme: Our Power, Our Planet.

UVA Sustainability continues to recognize the important advances at UVA Health. “Sustainable healthcare practices play a vital role in the University’s ability to achieve our 2030 sustainability goals," says Andrea Trimble, Director, UVA Office for Sustainability. "Work is being done across many facets of UVA Health to reduce environmental impacts."

Mike Marquardt, CHFP, Chief Financial Officer, UVA Health University Medical Center, leads The Joint Commission Sustainable Healthcare Operations Team (SHOT) that meets quarterly to advance sustainable healthcare practices. “Sustainable healthcare at University Medical Center is an important part of the stewardship of our ASPIRE values as we continuously improve patient care while reducing associated energy use and solid waste," he explains.

Among those making an impact: UVA Health University Medical Center Nursing Professional Governance Organization Sustainability Champions! Some of the members include (pictured, from left) Kelsey Necelis, BSN, RN, CNOR; Alicia White, BSN, RN, CAPA; and Debby Moody, BSN, RN, CNOR

Joanne Ondrush, MD, Medical Director, Critical Care Services, UVA Health Haymarket and Prince William Medical Centers, also serves as Chair of the UVA Community Health Sustainability Committee. She’s "extremely proud" of committee members' work. Workplace Violence Prevention Month: Response and Support

For week three of Workplace Violence Prevention Month, the focus is on how to respond during an incident and the support available afterward. Knowing what to do in the moment and understanding that support exists after can make a significant difference in staff safety and well-being.

What to Do During an Incident | If you are experiencing or witnessing workplace violence, your safety is the top priority. Trust your instincts. It is important to know when you need to step out and get assistance. Key actions to keep in mind:

Post-Incident Support | Experiencing workplace violence can be difficult, both physically and emotionally. Support is available, and you are not expected to navigate these situations alone. Taking time to process what happened and accessing available resources is an important part of recovery.

If you or your team would like to learn more about response strategies or available resources, please reach out to Emily Schacht Shabani, MS, Workplace Violence Prevention Coordinator, or stop by one of the Friday booths mentioned in the above link. You are not alone — support is here when you need it.

Training Materials for Unified Communications Now on the Epic Learning Library

Abstract visual representation of interconnected user icons symbolising social networking, teamwork, and communication in a technology-driven environment, emphasising the power of digital connections.

Additional materials will be added prior to go-live on May 20. Virtual Secure Chat Demos will also be available May 11-19.

We will continue to provide updates as new training becomes available.

How UVA Health Community Engagement and Health Outcomes Makes a Life Changing Impact on Area Residents

Not only is “Community Engagement and Health Outcomes” a key initiative of our UVA Health strategic plan’s goal of Cultivating Healthy Communities — it’s also the name of a key office at UVA Health. And true to its name, the UVA Health Office of Community Engagement and Health Outcomes (OCEHO) has been having quite an impact on Charlottesville residents.

UVA Health Chief Community Engagement and Health Outcomes Officer Tracy M. Downs, MD, FACS, launched the Neighborhood Health program to support Charlottesville neighborhoods identified by certain matrices including a social driver of health (SDOH) model

"Strong neighborhoods are the foundation of strong health — and community connection isn’t just good practice — it’s prevention science in action," says Dr. Downs. Read more on Connect

Launch Postponed: Epic Care Everywhere Referral Management

The April 14 launch of Epic Care Everywhere Referral Management (CERM) is being postponed. This additional time allows us to align more closely with clinical leadership and ensure shared understanding around referral workflows — including what information is shared externally, how referral patterns may change, and how teams manage internal and external referrals.

Clinical, IT, and operational leaders will reconvene the week of April 13; an updated timeline and clearer guidance will be shared after those discussions. In the meantime, Access and Scheduling team members have more time to complete training. While there’s no immediate go-live date, teams are encouraged to continue progressing so they’re well prepared when a new launch date is confirmed.

The Joint Commission standards are developed in consultation with healthcare professionals, measurement experts, and patients. Certification is renewed every 24 months, with a mid-cycle review to assess program progress and metrics. The advanced COPD Program underwent a rigorous, unannounced onsite review on Feb. 3, 2026.

COPD Program team members include: Jamie MacLeod, MD, and Y. Michael Shim, MD, Program Physicians; Brandie Taylor, MSN, RN, Clinical Program Coordinator; Derrick Many, RRT, Pulmonary Navigator; Numann Malik, MD, and Katarine Egressy, MD, MPH, Medical Directors; Hannah Mannem, MD, Director of Lung Transplant; Jeanell Webb-Jones, RN, Ambulatory Manager; Edela Colindres, LCSW; and the Pulmonary Function, Pulmonary Clinical, and Patient Access teams

April 7-9 | The Inpatient Hand Hygiene project is aligned with our systemwide transition to a new hand hygiene product vendor, GOJO (Purell products). The first phase involves conducting a current-state assessment to evaluate the placement of existing wall‑mounted and pump hand sanitizer dispensers. Due to the large number of locations, the vendor is unable to assign a specific appointment time for each unit/department. Instead, the assessment team will conduct roving visits to units and departments. Please ensure that a leader or designee is available during the assessment. Thank you in advance for your flexibility — every effort will be made to accommodate unexpected delays and ensure each clinic is visited. A member from the Infection Prevention team will accompany the vendor representatives. Schedule:

UVA Health Heart Failure Team

Exemplary Care and More

The UVA Health University Medical Center Heart Failure team has completed a very successful Joint Commission Heart Failure Survey with no deficiencies!

“Please join me in congratulating the Heart Failure team for their exceptional work and unwavering commitment to their patients and program,” says JoAnna Monroe, MPH, CHES, Director of Accreditation and Regulatory Standards. “The survey highlighted numerous strengths, with particular recognition of exemplary outcomes, a truly patient-centered approach, robust data support, and a highly cohesive interdisciplinary team.”

The March 13 Joint Commission Heart Failure Disease-Specific Certification survey represented the renewal of the UVA Health Heart Failure program’s two-year certification. It evaluated compliance with certification standards including clinical care processes, performance measurement, and interdisciplinary coordination for heart failure patients.

Survey activities included document review, staff interviews, and evaluation of patient care processes to confirm the program’s ongoing delivery of high-quality, evidence-based, heart failure care.

“It is a testament to the entire team,” says Terrie Edwards, MHA, FACHE, interim CEO, UVA Health University Medical Center. “Thank you to everyone who works so hard to have an excellent program all year so that we perform so well in the survey process. Congratulations!”

Transplant Team Creates a Garden of Pinwheels to Honor Those Who Have Donated Life

If you have time during National Donate Life Month, stop by the front of the West Complex to visit the Pinwheel Garden. Each blue-and-silver pinwheel, with its single stem and eight spokes, represents the ability of one person to save up to eight lives through organ donation. The multi-colored pinwheels symbolize the diverse stories and experiences connected to organ donation and transplantation.

Created by team members, patients, and families, these pinwheels illustrate the community spirit of Donate Life Month. The Pinwheel Garden will be on display through April 30. Thank you to everyone who helped make this possible!
