UVA Health Social Worker Becomes ‘Relentless Advocate’ When He Encounters a Person in ‘Active Crisis’ on the Street

"Compassionate care does not end when circumstances become difficult."

UVA Health University Medical Center Clinical Social Work Supervisor William "Bill" Potts, LCSW, Transplant Department, didn't hesitate when he saw a person in “active crisis” in an "unpredictable and potentially dangerous setting” in the middle of a Charlottesville street. He jumped into action, prioritizing de-escalation and safety. And now — for his heroism and much more — Potts has earned a BEE (Being Excellent Everyday) Award.

Rob Teaster, MBA, RN, FACHE, CPTC, Administrator, Transplant Service Line and Digestive Health Programs, and BEE Award Committee Chair Samantha Shifflett, surprised Potts with the award.

Administrative Assistants Missy Horton, and Emily Duvall, Transplant Department, described the stressful scene in their nomination of Potts (summarized below):

"Bill was on duty and walking to the Battle Building, when he encountered a person in active crisis — in the middle of the street — who reported experiencing a panic attack. Despite the unpredictable and potentially dangerous setting, Bill immediately exemplified extraordinary compassion, clinical judgment, and unwavering commitment to safety when he engaged the person in a calm, supportive, and therapeutic manner — prioritizing de-escalation and safety.

"He appropriately attempted to redirect the person to the Emergency Department; however, when the person firmly declined, Bill respected autonomy while continuing to assess risk and advocate for the safest possible outcome.

"At the person’s request, Bill — demonstrating strong knowledge of community resources and continuity of care — contacted Region 10. Then Bill remained physically present — providing constant emotional support, reassurance, and guidance until Region 10 assumed care. This required patience, persistence, and a genuine commitment to wellbeing.

"Bill’s actions reflect the very essence of the BEE Award: going above and beyond expected duties, advocating relentlessly for a vulnerable person, and demonstrating that compassionate care does not end when circumstances become difficult. His dedication ensured this person was not alone in a moment of crisis — and ultimately reached a place of safety."
