Updated June 15: To allow additional time for completion of training, the planned GE Muse electrocardiogram (ECG) system June 16 go live has been postponed to June 17, 2026.

Effective June 17, University Medical Center (UMC) and UPG Clinical Practice Group (CPG) clinics will replace the current Philips TraceMaster Electrocardiogram (ECG) System with GE Muse’s ECG System with Epic integration. The integrated Muse platform offers a more streamlined clinical interface for readers and improves ECG routing for faster results.

Beginning June 1 through June 19, onsite and remote training will be conducted for all frontline ECG testers, readers (physicians who perform the final read and sign ECGs electronically), and reconcilers — approximately 4,000 team members total.

Please note: Prince William and Haymarket already use GE devices and the Muse system, but this upgrade will enhance their current functionality. UVA Community Health will conduct a separate training process for Culpeper which will be communicated at a later date. At all locations, historical ECG records in Epic will be transferred from TraceMaster to Muse for future comparison.

FAQs

What support is available to prepare for go-live? 
GE Muse and the internal deployment team will provide reminders and attend meetings to raise awareness. At go-live, GE Muse representatives will round on-site at University Medical Center June 16-19. For additional assistance:

What is the difference between an ECG tester, reader, and reconciler?

• ECG testers administer ECG tests.
• ECG physician readers perform the final read and sign ECGs electronically. 
• ECG reconcilers review ECGs performed in their assigned department by shift to ensure they are associated with an accurate and available ECG order.

What if a team member is unavailable during the training window? 
While all ECG testers, readers, and reconcilers are strongly encouraged to complete either on-site or remote training on the new ECG devices, current employees may use the new devices without completing a training session. All ECG testers should review the tip sheet attached to the new GE Muse machines before performing their first test on the new device.

• New Hires who perform ECGs will have a competency statement on their new hire orientation form that will be validated by their preceptor, consistent with historical practice, as the equipment will already be in use at the time of hire.

Why do ECG physician readers need to catch up on reading and signing outstanding ECGs?
At go-live on June 17, historical ECG records will be transferred from TraceMaster to GE Muse for future comparison. Only reviewed and signed TraceMaster ECGs can be transferred into Muse. Unsigned ECGs will remain preliminary, which prevents final interpretation, billing, and can impact patient care. Consequently, impacted ECG readers must review and sign all outstanding TraceMaster ECGs. The process takes less than five minutes per ECG. The TraceMaster system will now be permanently turned off on June 22 at midnight once the transfer process is complete.

What are the downtime procedures for Muse?

• In the event ECG orders placed in Epic are not available for use on the ECG machines, barcode scanners will not scan patient wristbands. Instead, ECG testers will need to manually type in the patient information into the ECG machine.
• In the event ECGs will not upload to Muse, the ECG testers who perform and use the ECG machines will need to manually upload the ECGs acquired during the downtime to Muse once the downtime is over and Muse is back up. This step is also crucial to getting these ECGs into Epic. ECG Reconcilers must merge the orders and route the ECGs to Epic. Instructions on how to do this can be found below.

Transmitting from the File Screen on MAC VU360 and MAC 5:

• From main screen, select Files.
• Expand the menu by touching the double arrow.
• Once expanded on the far-right side of the screen you will see the Sent column. The ECGs without checkmarks need to be transmitted. If your cart is set to auto-delete upon transmission the only ones on the screen would be those that did not send and there would be a red x in the Sent column.
• Click the box at the top left, and all the boxes will check. The Transmit Button will turn Blue. Select transmit.
• Verify transmission is completed.

Can I still use Haiku to submit an ECG order in Epic before testing?
Yes, orders can be placed in Haiku on your way to the patient.

Can I still order multiple ECG occurrences?
Yes. Use these as you feel clinically appropriate. Remember, the order needs to be signed before the ECG test is performed so the system can pull it into Epic immediately. Can I still place a PRN order?
Yes. Use these as you feel clinically appropriate. However, the order needs to be signed before the ECG test is performed so the system can pull it into Epic immediately.
