How BEE Award Winner Serves As a Shining Light at UVA Health Culpeper Medical Center

"Through her warmth, initiative, and unwavering commitment to improving the patient experience — she embodies the spirit of our organization.

Angela "Angie" Breeden, Surgical Services Scheduler, is the newest BEE Awardee at UVA Health Culpeper Medical Center!

Lara Walker, Operating Rooms Manager, nominated Breeden calling special attention to the ways she “goes above and beyond every single day to make patients, families, and visitors feel welcome and cared for. Angie is an outstanding example of compassion, professionalism, and dedication in action!”

Walker also describes what really sets Breeden and her work apart: “As the first person you see when walking into the Outpatient Surgery Center, Angie sets the tone for the entire patient experience. Her friendly smile and genuine enthusiasm instantly put people at ease.”

Walker then provides specific examples of Angela’s exemplary work: “What makes Angie exceptional is her natural ability to connect with everyone she meets. Whether she's greeting scheduled patients or helping visitors who stop by mistakenly, Angie treats every interaction as an opportunity to make a positive impact. She's often the first point of contact for individuals looking for directions elsewhere in the hospital, and she never hesitates to go out of her way to help them get where they need to go. Her kindness and warmth truly make a difference.”

Dedication and Instinct to Care

Alongside the positive impact that Angie makes with her day-to-day kindness, she also recently had an especially notable impact on a visiting family through her empathy and personal touch. Walker recounts, “A son brought his parent in for an appointment, and they stopped by the Surgery Center so the parent could sit and rest for a moment. The patient was noticeably anxious and nervous, and when the son needed to go retrieve their car, the patient didn't want him to leave. Angie immediately offered to stay so he could go, and the parent agreed. Angie spent the entire time talking with and helping the parent feel calm, comfortable, and cared for.”

“Before they left, the patient needed to use the restroom. Angie walked with them there and waited nearby to make sure they were okay. None of this was part of Angie's job description, but it speaks volumes about her personal character and her instinct to care for others with genuine empathy. Her dedication extends beyond daily interactions!”

Communicating and Collaborating for Improved Patient Experience

Breeden also has used her empathy to speak up for others, ensuring that providing thoughtful care is a hospital-wide, collaborative endeavor. Shares Walker: “Angie also noticed recurring questions from patients about navigating the facility and took action. She collaborated with the Wayfinding Committee to share her insights, offering feedback that was used to help improve wayfinding across the hospital.”

“She also took the initiative to help ensure provider address information on the university webpage is accurate and current. These changes have not only enhanced the clarity of hospital communication, but also contributed directly to a better overall patient experience.”

Measuring Success in Smiles

While Walker comments in her nomination on Breeden’s natural affinity for friendliness and connection, it’s important to recognize the intentional work that’s put into these attributes every day. Walker concludes, “Perhaps most importantly, Angie measures her success by the smiles she creates and the comfort she brings. Many patients and families have expressed gratitude for her kindness. Some even stop back by just to thank her or say hello long after their appointments or surgical procedures.”

“These meaningful connections remind her of the difference she makes every day, and they remind us how lucky we are to have her as part of our team. Angie is truly a shining light at Culpeper Medical Center! Through her warmth, initiative, and unwavering commitment to improving the patient experience, she embodies the spirit of our organization and deserves to be celebrated for the positivity she brings to everyone around her.”

In Her Own Words

Breeden has been with UVA Health for nearly three years, and enthusiastic about what winning the BEE Award represents, taking time to express her pride, gratitude, and overwhelming emotions when she was first surprised with her award ceremony: "Being the first point of contact for our patients is something I never take lightly. I always want every person who walks through our doors to feel at ease, comfortable, confident, and cared for.”

“What makes this award even more meaningful is knowing this job is so much bigger than just me. I could never do what I do without the support, teamwork, and dedication of every single person I work alongside. It means so much to be able to serve as a positive outlet for both my team and our patients, and I’m incredibly thankful to be part of such an amazing group of people.”

Elaborating on her career goals, Angela adds her focus is on “continuing to grow personally and professionally while helping make our Surgery Center the best it can possibly be for everyone! I want to play a meaningful role in making our facility even more accessible and effective for both our patients and our team, and a positive difference in my workplace by contributing to an environment where people feel supported, valued, and cared for.”
