UVA Health Update | June 2026
USB Storage Device Blocking Expands to Pharmacy, CPG Clinics
To strengthen our cyberdefenses, UVA Health has begun blocking the use of USB storage devices (e.g., thumb drives and other external storage drives) on all UVA Health-issued personal computers (PCs). The next implementation phase begins June 30 and includes inpatient and outpatient Pharmacy, UPG Clinical Practice Group (CPG) clinics, and remaining University Hospital inpatient unit PCs. See Connect for a detailed schedule. If you’re wondering if USB storage devices are blocked on your PC, HIT has deployed a desktop tray icon to indicate your computer's status: 1) blocked, 2) exception granted, or 3) policy not yet implemented. See the FAQs on Connect for more.
As a reminder, instead of USB devices, team members should use their Microsoft OneDrive cloud storage account for secure data storage and sharing. This change does not affect USB-connected mice, keyboards, phone chargers, or similar accessories.
Ambulatory
PFA Is Now Ambulatory Access
To ensure the name of the division and related teams are simple, concise, and accurately reflect the work that these teams perform, Patient-Friendly Access (or PFA) has changed its name to Ambulatory Access. Scheduling Pods (or Pods) are now Ambulatory Scheduling Teams.
Together, these new names support greater clarity and understanding of the access function across clinical, operational, and administrative settings, while bringing UVA Health in line with our peers and industry standards for how access work is identified. These names apply to patient access across University Medical Center (including service lines) and UPG Clinical Practice Group. If you have questions, please contact the Ambulatory Access leader in your area.
Operations
Pap Smear Turnaround Times Delayed
UVA Health Cytology Lab’s turnaround times for Pap smear testing is expected to exceed 30 days through August 2026, returning to fewer than 30 days in September. Delays stem from a nationwide shortage of trained cytologists to review Pap smear specimens. Reference labs are dealing with the same personnel shortages, so they are not a viable alternative. Average turnaround time for HPV testing is seven days, so clinicians are encouraged to use primary HPV screening when appropriate, per American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommendations. UVA Health lab leadership is pursuing multiple pathways to mitigate delays and increase staffing. Your support and patience during this time are greatly appreciated.

‘The Best Care Provider’ | Kudos to Our UVA Health Colleagues
To best serve our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their healthcare experience. Below is a selection of feedback praising our team members:
- "This was the first time we had been to UVA Health. We drove three hours to get there and were very pleased with the treatment. We knew more and were treated better in the few hours we were there than we have in two months with healthcare near our home.”
- "I have been seeing Dr. Bergin twice a year for 30 years. He has always been very professional and personable, and I have great confidence in him. I feel so fortunate to be working with him now and for the past 30 years! He is always very prompt and wanting to hear how I've been feeling. In my opinion, he's gives 100% of his knowledge and care each time I see him.”
- "The nurse practitioner, Michael Burson, was phenomenal! He corrected some issues I'd had with scheduling, made me feel heard, and took away my anxiety over being able to get the pain management and range of motion I desire. He's the best care provider I have had overall in years.”
- "Keith Pillow [Dermatology] is excellent — he is a perfect example of how patient care should be handled. He is kind, gentle, very thoughtful, takes time to listen, and explains everything. His knowledge and patient interaction are exceptional!”
Thank you to our team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care!

UVA Health WellAware Program Hosts Healthy Streets, Healthy People Event in Partnership with City of Charlottesville
UVA Health’s Population Health WellAware Community Health Worker program team recently hosted their fifth annual Healthy Streets, Healthy People event in partnership with the City of Charlottesville and the Move2HealthEquity Coalition. Held at Booker T. Washington Park, the family-friendly community event featured engaging activities for all ages while sharing resources for street safety and environmentally healthy neighborhoods.
"The Healthy Streets Fair is what caring for your neighbors looks like in action," says Betsy Peyton, BA, BSN, RN, Director, Clinical Care Services WellAware. "This year, more than 50 organizations came out to offer resources, health education, safety trainings, kids' activities, gardening demos, and a free BBQ lunch. But it's more than just a fun afternoon — it's a chance to have real conversations about the things that affect people's daily lives, whether that's gun violence, pedestrian safety, healthy food access, or staying safe in the heat. We are committed to making our community safer and more welcoming for everyone."
Teams from UVA Health and UVA student groups played a big role in creating a successful day of fun and education for the Charlottesville community! Read more and see photos on Connect.

‘An Extraordinary Job’ | Kudos to Our UVA Health Colleagues
To best serve our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their healthcare experience. Below is a selection of feedback praising our team members:
- "UVA Health Emergency Department is hard to beat. The team does an extraordinary job! Thank you.”
- "I had a terrific experience overall. Very professional from the moment I walked into the hospital until I walked/wheelchaired out. I was born at UVA Health 80 years ago. We are so blessed to have one of the top hospitals in the county. Thank you for the wonderful and sensitive care for health!”
- "Malik in nutrition is wonderful — always very polite and has a heartwarming smile.”
- “Working with Josh, my pain has decreased faster than I thought possible — and he's helped me regain strength and stability to keep the pain away long term. Even more importantly, I feel confident in our plan because he's given me the knowledge to understand both the issues we're trying to fix and how each exercise contributes to resolving them. Understanding the mechanics and getting the correct muscle engagement and coordination is so much easier and quicker when I know the what, why, and how behind the plan.”
Thank you to our team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care!

All team members are required to be familiar with the Red Book for their area including location, contents, layout, and when it is to be used. Appreciation
‘Beyond Exceptional’ | Kudos to Our UVA Health Colleagues
To best serve our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their healthcare experience. Below is a selection of feedback praising our team members:
- "Dr. B. is incredible. She spent so much time with me, as she always does, listening to how I was feeling and never rushing me along even though I'm sure I made her late for other appointments. I was having a really tough time when I saw her, and not only did she give me hope while I was there, but she also [provided medication], which has substantially helped with my mood swings. I am beyond grateful and rave about her to everyone I know.”
- "Dr. Verga is beyond exceptional! She's a consummate listener, empathetic, and knowledgeable. Her interventions have drastically improved my life. The pain relief from my treatment has made a huge difference in my everyday routine. I can exercise more, sleep better, and eat again. Dr. Verga is a rock star — please make sure she remains at UVA Health!”
- "I planned for a one-night stay but, due to post-op issues that arose, I was kept for four nights. I am so thankful for my surgical team under Dr. Garneau, putting my welfare over making room — as I have heard happen to people at other facilities. I need to give a special shout out to these nurses who worked closely with me: Katie, Jill, and Anita. They were so caring, attentive, and reassuring. I couldn't have come through this event without their humor and humanity. I feel blessed to have been treated by this UVA Health team from start to finish.”
Thank you to our team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care!

‘No Mother or Baby Is Left Behind’
American Red Cross Central Virginia has presented the 2026 Healthcare Hero Award to the UVA Health University Medical Center interdisciplinary Obstetrics, and Maternal and Fetal Medicine, teams.

"This incredible group isn't just working within the walls of the UVA Health University Medical Center,” hails Jason Lineen, MBA, interim Chief, UVA Health Children’s, and Chief Strategy Officer, UVA Health. “They’re actively stepping up to address the growing crisis of maternity deserts in Central, Southern, and Southwest Virginia.”
He adds: “In an era in which maternal care is becoming harder to access in rural areas, this team is working tirelessly to ensure no mother or baby is left behind. I’m constantly inspired by my colleagues' dedication to expanding access and delivering world-class care to every corner of our state.”

The Power of Nurses: 2026 National Nurses Week at UVA Health
UVA Health celebrated 2026 National Nurses Week from Charlottesville to Northern Virginia — honoring the around the clock contributions of thousands of nurses in a wide variety of roles and sites. The concept of National Nurses Week began in the early 1950s, but wasn't formally celebrated until the mid-1970s. In 1974, the International Council of Nurses declared May 12 — the birthday of Florence Nightingale, often called the “the founder of modern nursing” — as International Nurses Day. This year's theme: Our Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives.
