Coming This Fall: New, Epic-Integrated Patient Education

Clear, effective patient education is a vital part of delivering quality care and providers should be able to seamlessly share comprehensive education that patients can easily access and understand. To improve the experience of assigning and receiving patient education, UVA Health will be adopting WebMD Ignite on FHIR, an enterprise patient education platform fully embedded in Epic.

WebMD Ignite on FHIR will bring together 25,000 pieces of trusted education content in one place, featuring health sheets, discharge instructions, and short educational videos. This integration of standardized, evidence‑based education directly into your Epic workflows means materials can be quickly assigned to patients where you already work.

This project supports health system goals to reduce fragmentation, improve consistency, make it easier for providers to confidently deliver patient education without adding extra logins or tasks, and as importantly, strive to ensure that our patients are informed and engaged in their health care journey with us, resulting in a more satisfying experience and better outcomes.

Updated Aug. 4: Effective immediately, the Patient Education section is being removed from the Clinical Practice Guideline template and from any working drafts in PolicyTech. During this transition period, Accreditation will be auditing currently published documents and removing patient education content as appropriate. Regulatory requirements related to patient and family education continue to be addressed through the Provision and Documentation of Patient and Family Education Medical Center Policy. Requests to include patient or family education content in governed documents to support specific regulatory requirements will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

WebMD Ignite on FHIR FAQs

What is WebMD Ignite on FHIR?
WebMD Ignite on FHIR is UVA Health’s new Epic-integrated enterprise patient education platform. It will replace multiple existing sources of patient education with one centralized, standardized solution. FHIR (sounds like “fire”) stands for: Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources.

Will this change my workflow?
WebMD Ignite on FHIR is a certified Epic-integrated solution, designed to fit naturally into existing workflows. No separate system or additional login is required. This product is designed to minimize clicks and simplify patient education assignment workflows.

Why are we making this change?
Patient education sources are currently spread across multiple tools, with varying quality and formatting. For patients, implementing WebMD on FHIR will improve the consistency and quality of education, ensuring that our patients are informed and engaged in their health care journey with us, resulting in a more satisfying experience and better outcomes. For providers, WebMD on FHIR will create a single source of truth and reduce time spent searching for materials with seamless integration directly within Epic workflows.

How will I access and assign education?
All patient education will be accessed and assigned directly within Epic – no separate system or login needed. Within Epic, you will be able to:

What types of patient education are included?

How do I assign content to a patient whose preferred language is not English?

WebMD Ignite on FHIR provides all patient education in English and Spanish. Select content is also available in Arabic, Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), French, German, Haitian Creole, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Tagalog, and Vietnamese.

How does WebMD Ignite on FHIR generate content suggestions for my patient?

Can education be recalled from MyChart after it has been assigned to a patient?
Yes, assigned education can be recalled from MyChart for up to 30 days. If the patient has not viewed the content, it will be removed from their MyChart account. If the patient has viewed the content and it is later recalled, they will still see the title of the recalled content assigned to them. However, clicking on the title of recalled content will lead to a “not available” message.

Can I see if my patient reviewed the education I assigned?
Yes! When education is sent through MyChart within Epic, you can see if a patient opened the assigned education; if a video was assigned, you can see how much was watched. This visibility and insight will support follow-up conversations and reinforcement of key teaching points.

What will the patient experience be like?
Patients will see newly assigned education marked with a “New” indicator. They will have ongoing access to assigned education for 12 months. Content is delivered in a mobile-friendly format and includes both written materials and short videos.

How does an assigned video appear on the AVS?

Can I still customize patient education?

What happens to existing custom or specialty content?

Those PDFs and flyers will remain available as supplemental resources and can be found in the Patient Education Repository (PER), accessed via Knowledgelink under Clinical Links. The Repository can also be accessed from Epic under the Resources pull down menu. New custom content will be displayed as plain text documents within WebMD Ignite on FHIR.

Will Clinical References still be used?
