‘Heroic Quick Thinking!’: UVA Health Team Member ‘Springs Into Action’ to Save a Colleague

"In an instant — the situation changed!"

A UVA Health APP manager is thanking a colleague — for saving another team member from "what could have been a devastating head injury." And now for her valiant actions, Hope Wells, Clinical Laboratory Assistant, Phlebotomy, has earned a BEE (Being Excellent Everyday) Award!

UVA Health University Medical Center Chief Operating Officer Min Lee, MHA, MBA, and BEE Award Committee Chair Samantha Shifflett surprised Wells with the honor. Jessica Kassay-McAllister, DNP, APP Manager, Stem Cell Transplant, nominated Wells in recognition of her "exceptional professionalism, clinical expertise, and heroic quick thinking!"

Here's the nomination:

"Hope plays a vital role in our in-clinic, bone marrow procedures — consistently demonstrating efficiency, knowledge, and kindness. She is not only highly skilled in preparing and assessing slides and samples — she also brings a calm, friendly presence that reassures patients and team members. Her insight and attention to detail elevate the quality of care we provide every day!

"On what began as a routine procedural day — Hope arrived prepared, focused, and ready to assist with biopsy slides and specimen preparation. I was the proceduralist, and Hope was accompanied by another team member. The procedure was progressing smoothly.

"Then, in an instant — the situation changed!

"Near the end of the procedure, the team member suddenly became pale and diaphoretic [sweating excessively]. Within seconds, they began to lose consciousness and collapse toward the concrete floor. Without hesitation, Hope sprang into action! With remarkable awareness and reflexes, she caught the team member mid-fall, preventing them from striking their head on the hard surface. Hope carefully and safely assisted them to the floor and immediately placed them in the rescue position.

"Throughout this critical moment — Hope maintained calm, clear communication with the team. She independently assessed the situation, ensured the team member’s safety, and coordinated next steps — all while maintaining composure and clinical judgment.

"Because of Hope’s vigilance and decisive action, the situation resolved safely. The team member regained consciousness within minutes and recovered fully. Hope’s actions exemplify the very spirit of the BEE Award. She demonstrated:

"Hope did not seek recognition. She simply acted — instinctively, professionally, and selflessly — to protect the team member while continuing to support patient care. Hope Wells truly embodies the best of our team. Her keen assessment, rapid response, and steadfast commitment to safety quite literally saved the day. I cannot think of a more deserving recipient of the BEE Award!"
