‘Like Talking With a Friend’: Only a Few Months Into Her Role, UVA Health Patient Care Technician Is Honored With a BEE Award
Learn how future RN Cassidy Bianchi already is taking"the time to help, motivate, and offer a sense of humility in the way she cares for others."
Every month, Nursing Professional Governance Organization (NPGO) BEE Award Committee honors up to two UVA Health University Medical Center team members with this award. One of the latest recipients earned the recognition fewer than six months into her role!
University Medical Center Associate Chief of Business Operations Kathryn King Perkinson, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, CEN — and BEE Award Committee Vice Chair Allisha Shifflett, AEMT — surprised Cassidy Bianchi, Patient Care Technician, Staffing Resource Office, with the BEE (Being Excellent Everyday) Award.
Elizabeth "Liz" Reinhard, MSN, RN, CMSRN, nominated Bianchi:
"When I met Cassidy at the beginning of our shift on 5 Central, I knew it was going to be a good day! She shared with me that it was only her fourth shift on the floor as a PCT (although you'd never know with her confidence and go-getter personality)! We had mutual patients throughout the day and Cassidy constantly brought a bright smile and was cheerful and upbeat.
"She motivated a patient, who was 'set in his ways,' to get out of bed and wear a supportive back brace. He'd been in the hospital for several days. Cassidy was calm, patient, and kind with each interaction. As our shift was ending, he thanked her for her help — with a smile of his own!
"Cassidy is such an asset to have at UVA Health. She truly goes above and beyond and creates a connection and partnership with her colleagues and patients. She's shared with me that she's in her last year of nursing school. I am confident that when Cassidy receives her RN degree, she'll be an exceptional nurse because of the way she takes the time to help, motivate, and offer a sense of humility in the way she cares for others."
Karina Guinn, BSN, RN, MEDSURG-BC, Inpatient Charge Nurse, also nominated Bianchi:
"Cassidy provided exceptional care while assisting the patient with a shower. The patient was deeply appreciative and expressed how genuinely happy she felt with the way Cassidy supported her. Cassidy took her time, explained each step, and spoke to the patient with warmth and respect — making her feel like she was talking with a friend. This helped the patient feel comfortable, valued, and far less self‑conscious.
"The patient repeatedly shared how good Cassidy made her feel throughout the experience. Cassidy even helped with her feet, turning what could have been an uncomfortable moment into something simple and dignified.
"Despite caring for multiple patients on the unit, Cassidy responds promptly to all call lights and maintained a positive, uplifting attitude. We are truly fortunate she floated to our unit, and her compassionate care exemplifies the qualities worthy of recognition."
