OneUVA Workday: Building a Stronger Foundation for Our Future

As UVA Health continues to care for more patients by expanding its clinical reach and deepening partnerships across the Commonwealth, leaders are focused on ensuring the organization’s operations evolve alongside its care delivery. That focus is driving OneUVA Workday — a multi-year business operations transformation designed to strengthen how UVA Health works, makes decisions, and sustains its mission for the long term. It is being organized in collaboration with the University of Virginia and was initially announced in October by various members of the University and Health System.

“This is not simply a technology implementation,” says Mitchell H. Rosner, MD, MACP, FRCP, Chief Executive Officer, UVA Health, Executive Vice President for Health Affairs, University of Virginia. “OneUVA Workday is about building an operational foundation that matches our clinical excellence. As we grow, we must function as one unified system — aligned, transparent, and ready for the future.”

A Transformation Grounded in Purpose

Healthcare continues to grow more complex, and UVA Health’s footprint continues to expand in an effort to care for more patients. To keep pace, leaders understand the organization must simplify work, strengthen coordination, and reduce administrative friction so resources can be reinvested in patient care, research, and its people.

“When we eliminate inefficiencies and operate more cohesively, we create real capacity,” says Stephanie Schnittger, Chief Financial Officer of UVA Health. “The efficiencies we gain through OneUVA Workday will strengthen our overall business operations and financial resilience and allow us to reinvest in the mission that defines us.”

The transformation will unfold in phases through 2028 and is structured around four integrated workstreams:

1. Workday Integration. UVA Health will bring Finance, Supply Chain, Procurement, and Human Resources together in Workday as a single, modern, cloud-based platform. This integration will enhance data visibility, reporting, and stewardship of resources across the enterprise. The design phase begins March 2026 and will involve deep collaboration to ensure the future system reflects how teams actually work — and how they need to work going forward.

2. Sourcing Optimization. Beginning March 2026, clinical and administrative leaders will work together to evaluate suppliers, consolidate vendors where appropriate, simplify inventory management, and leverage the full purchasing power of the organization. The goal is to maximize value while maintaining quality and service.

3. Process Optimization. Rather than digitizing existing workflows, this effort will reimagine them. Teams will identify redundancies, eliminate unnecessary steps, and standardize best practices to reduce administrative burden and free teams to focus on mission-driven work.

4. Operating Model Design. This workstream will define the structures, governance, and service delivery models necessary to support a more integrated enterprise. By clarifying roles and strengthening coordination across Finance, Human Resources, and Supply Chain, UVA Health will ensure the organization is positioned to operate seamlessly as one system.

Redesigning How We Work — Together

Leaders emphasize that OneUVA Workday is about intentional redesign, not incremental adjustment.

“We are taking this opportunity to rethink how we operate at a fundamental level,” Rosner says. “This is about creating clarity, strengthening collaboration, and ensuring that our systems support our people — not the other way around.”

Schnittger addd that the long-term impact extends beyond operational efficiency. “Efficiency gains today create stability for tomorrow. By aligning how we work and making better use of data and scale, we position UVA Health to adapt, grow, and continue investing in the communities we serve.”

A Multi-Year Commitment to the Future

OneUVA Workday represents a significant commitment — one that will require engagement and partnership across the organization. Leaders stress that every voice matters as teams design the future state together.

“This transformation will shape UVA Health for years to come,” Rosner says. “By working collaboratively and thoughtfully, we are building a stronger, more unified foundation that will sustain our mission well into the future.”

Through OneUVA Workday, UVA Health is not only modernizing its operations — it is strengthening its ability to deliver exceptional care, advance discovery, and serve communities for generations to come.
