Out of Sight But Not Out of Mind: Learn How This UVA Health Team Literally Goes Above and Beyond to Minimize Disruption to Patient Care
“Their efforts may not always be visible, but they make a meaningful difference every day."
Congratulations to UVA Health Haymarket Medical Center Plant Engineering's Eric Daniels, Supervisor; Stephen Dotson and David Friend, Facility Maintenance Technicians; and Robert Hook, HVAC Technician, on earning a BEE (Being Excellent Everyday) Award, which honors our team members who work alongside our nurses to impact patients’ experiences.
M. Kate Edwards, BSN, RN, CPAN, nominated these team members "in recognition of their consistent dedication to supporting safe, high-quality patient care.”
Rising to the Challenge
While much of this team’s work happens out of sight, it plays a critical role in keeping every unit running safely and efficiently. “From responding quickly to urgent equipment issues to maintaining the infrastructure that keeps patient care areas
operational,” explains Edwards, “their commitment allows clinical staff to focus fully on caring for patients.”
Recently, when an issue with the air handlers could've affected operations, the team demonstrated exceptional teamwork and responsiveness — minimizing disruption and ensuring patient care continues safely. “They go above — literally — and beyond to locate the origin of concern,” hails Edwards. “They arrive promptly, work collaboratively with other team members, and remain until the issue is fully resolved! What stands out most about this team is their willingness to go beyond expectations. They treat every request with urgency and respect, recognizing that even small issues can impact patient care.”
