Ready, Set — Socktober!
Did you know clean socks are the top requested — yet least donated — item at homeless shelters? You can help change that in the Charlottesville area. After all, October at UVA Health is Socktober!
Oct. 1-Oct. 31, drop off a new pair of socks in Socktober bins at:
- University Medical Center Cafeteria
- Wahoo West Café
- OR waiting room
- Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center
- Orthopedic Center at Ivy Road
- Fontaine
Or, rally your department to vie for prizes! The department that turns in the most socks each week will receive cookie platters for their team. There will be a total of four departmental winners this month:
- Oct 1-8
- Oct. 9-15
- Oct. 16-22
- Oct. 23-29
There also will be overall departmental prizes. The three departments who turn in the most pairs of new socks will win catered events and the top department also will earn a trophy! For donations to count toward a departmental prize, give collected socks directly to the retail manager or supervisor on duty. Questions? Contact Chadwick French, Director of Retail.
In the 2022 campaign, team members donated 5,053 new pairs of socks for local organizations that help the homeless. This year's goal is 10,000! Living on the street, many unsheltered individuals rarely take their shoes off, walk often, and don’t always have access to laundry facilities. Socktober’s mission is to keep feet warm, dry, and clean.
