UVA Health Update | January 2026
USB Storage Devices Will No Longer Be Allowed on Health System PCs Starting This Spring
To strengthen our cyber defenses, starting in March, UVA Health will begin blocking the use of USB storage devices (e.g., “thumb” drives and other external storage drives) on all UVA Health personal computers (PCs). The blocking initiative will roll out in phases, starting with a pilot for inpatient room PCs which began on Jan. 27, and expanding to other areas starting in March. Instead of USB devices, team members should use their Microsoft OneDrive cloud storage account for secure data storage. To learn more about the USB blocking initiative, including a project timeline and FAQs, visit Connect.

Appreciation
‘One of the Best in the Country’ | Kudos to Our UVA Health Colleagues
To best serve our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their healthcare experience. Below is a selection of feedback praising our team members:
- "Your receptionist was excellent. I believe her name was Molly. She lightened everything up when I started joking about her desk name plate, which was an envelope with her name in marker. When Anthony came to take me back for the test, she even joked (lightheartedly) about his care. UVA Health needs more people like her.”
- "As far as I'm concerned, UVA Health is one of the best in the country. I have been hospitalized here many times and have always received the best care. My wife and I moved back to Charlottesville because of the medical care I needed. I have all the confidence in all the doctors and nurses there, as well as the other caretakers. No matter what medical problem presents itself, there is a doctor on premises who can handle it. This is not the case in some hospitals. Also, the food is very good; more like restaurant food than hospital food.”
- "Miss Jody made me feel very comfortable and made me realize I can be happy again, and that I'm not a weakling because I have something called depression. She gave me hope by giving me an exercise to do that brought me joy, which in turn brought me hope. I will do everything she tells me to do to help myself!”
Thank you to our team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care!

Thank You for Your Extraordinary Commitment
From senior leadership: “We want to extend our sincere thanks to every member of the UVA Health team for your extraordinary efforts over the past week. In the face of significant challenges — including a major storm and unexpected operational disruptions — you responded with professionalism, adaptability, and an unwavering focus on the people who depend on us.”
“Across the health system, teams activated emergency protocols, adjusted schedules and workflows, supported one another, and ensured that patient care continued safely with as few disruptions as possible. In many areas, this meant proactively reaching out to patients to move critical appointments earlier or pivoting to virtual visits when needed. One expectant mother later shared how relieved she was to be contacted in advance and not left wondering whether she would miss an important milestone in her care.” Read more on KnowledgeLink.

Voice for the Patients’ Families
Olivia’s Light Foundation — a nonprofit supporting children with genetic disorders, medical complexities, and severe disabilities — has made a $100,000 donation to UVA Health Children’s to create a pediatric palliative care endowment. The check was presented during a recent event at the Battle Building.
Pictured from left: Jason Lineen, MBA, Chief Strategy Officer, UVA Health, and interim Chief, UVA Health Children's; Malan Jackson, Associate Director of Development, UVA Health Children’s; Margaret Koval, Care Coordinator, and Joy Miller, Nurse Practitioner, UVA Health Pediatric Palliative Care; Barb Sauer, Treasurer, and Jenna King, Co-Founder, President, and Executive Director, Olivia’s Light Foundation.
“Palliative care providers are liaisons between the families and multiple specialists within pediatrics, so they are the voice for the patients’ families,” King tells reporters. “They also guide really tough decisions when you have a child with an extremely rare disease or complex issues.”
Olivia’s Light was founded by Jenna and her husband, Ben King, to honor their daughter Olivia, who was hospitalized shortly after her birth in July 2022 with life-threatening apnea and other unexplained conditions. Olivia was transferred to UVA Health Children’s, where broad genetic testing revealed she had a rare and fatal neurodevelopmental disorder.
While the diagnosis was the family’s “worst nightmare,” it enabled them to make informed decisions about their daughter’s care. Olivia was discharged at two and a half months old and passed away weeks later in her mother’s arms in October 2022.

Submission of this form is for planning purposes only and does not constitute a reservation. Details.
More information will be sent via email and posted to Connect later today and throughout the weekend. As always:

Appreciation
‘An Example of Excellence’ | Kudos to Our UVA Health Colleagues
To best serve our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their healthcare experience. Below is a selection of feedback praising our team members:
- "The resident who was assigned to my case was a top-notch doctor. He was attentive and appropriately concerned. He conceptualized my case within the context of my medical history, and he provided targeted, over-the-counter recommendations in my after-visit summary. He validated my concerns while also providing appropriate hope. It was evident that he had a basic understanding of my medical chart. He was truly an example of excellence in patient-centered care.”
- "My entire experience with UVA Health ortho — Dr. Cooper and the entire team — has been outstanding. Every single person I've interacted with has been kind, caring, patient, thoughtful, and seems to genuinely love what they do and have a real passion for caring for patients and ensuring a positive experience. I have never had surgery prior to this experience — and probably should have been nervous or anxious — but I had full confidence in the team and had a truly great experience from start to finish. I would absolutely recommend UVA Health ortho and Dr. Cooper to anyone who needs ankle or other orthopedic care.”
- "Both of the technicians were warm and efficient, but the team member who impressed me the most was Lee, at the front desk. She was welcoming and courteous and — after I signed in for my X-ray appointment — she came to me saying she had seen in my chart that I was scheduled for a bone scan. She asked if I wanted to do it while I was there, and promptly signed me up. Dealing with health problems is always traumatic, but just a simple act of caring can make all the difference. Thanks, Lee!”
Thank you to our team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care!

Winter Weather Safety
At this time, we are closely monitoring the weather forecast for this weekend, as snow is expected to begin Saturday night and continue into Sunday. While forecasts currently vary on potential snowfall amounts across UVA Health’s service areas, we will have greater clarity as we get closer to the weekend. Our teams are actively preparing, and we will share updates as needed. In the meantime, we encourage you to stay aware of weather conditions and make any routine preparations.
To keep everyone as safe as possible, please be prepared for winter weather events. When severe enough, these events may cause us to modify our operations, alter parking locations and bus service schedules, and require some team members to remain in or near our patient care facilities after their shift ends. Learn more about winter weather preparedness on Connect.
- Report an icy patch or area that needs clearing at a UVA Health facility by calling 434.924.2267.

Thank you for all you do to care for our patients and one another, and please take care as you make preparations for the weekend. We appreciate your attention and will share updates as conditions evolve.

Mandatory Masking in Effect on 4C and 4N
From Costi Sifri, MD, Hospital Epidemiologist: Effective immediately, mandatory masking is in place on units 4C and 4N for all staff, patients, and visitors due to an increase in confirmed flu cases.
While on these units, please wear a mask at all times and continue to follow key infection-prevention practices, including good hand hygiene, symptom monitoring, and staying home when ill. These steps help limit the spread of respiratory illness and protect the health and safety of our patients, families, and team members.
Other details:
- During this time of heightened respiratory illness, units are likely to go on/off mandatory masking if/when there are specific unit outbreaks.
- Signage and masks will be present where and when masking is required.
- In areas where masking is not required, it is still strongly encouraged — especially in inpatient care settings.
Thank you for your cooperation and for your continued commitment to patient and team safety. For information on respiratory illnesses, please visit Employee Health. Read the message on KnowledgeLink.

To best serve our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their healthcare experience. Below is a selection of feedback praising our team members:
- "Dr. Bruno was very efficient in reviewing my lab results and determining a diagnosis, while being respectful to my concerns and questions. Dr. Bruno took extra time to find and perform a procedure that confirmed diagnosis and offered a way to relieve the condition. I appreciate the teamwork in the Emergency Department during my visit, and especially Dr. Bruno's input.”
- "Wayne, the technologist, was amazing! He told me what to expect at each step and asked how I was after each scan. He made sure I was ready before he walked me back to the dressing area after the scan. I really didn't have any concerns and definitely didn’t have any complaints.”
- "Technologist Mikki was a blessing — she was professional, efficient, kind, knowledgeable, and respectful. ... This type of scan is very invasive and uncomfortable, but your tech, Mikki, calmed all my fears and treated me with respect and dignity. She made me emotionally comfortable, and the scan itself was painless. ... I think you should consider her as an instructor/trainer for all your technologists.”

New Year, New Beginnings: UVA Health PACU Nurses Deliver Baby Boom
UVA Health University Medical Center's Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) is welcoming a remarkable number of new arrivals! With eight nurses either recently having newborns or preparing to do so — the unit has become a place of shared excitement, deep support, and teamwork during a season of major life transitions. After all, one of our guiding principles is caring for and empowering our fellow team members, and one of our strategic plan's key initiatives is making UVA Health a best place to work.
“Our managers have been amazing at helping us schedule breaks and prepare the unit for the changes ahead,” says Sarah Warring, MSN, RN, CNL, CPAN. “I think it shows our resiliency and dedication to patient care, even when big life changes are happening to many of our coworkers.”
For many PACU nurses, this moment also has deepened how they see their patients. “I've realized that everyone was an infant at one point — helpless, relying on caregivers for every need,” Warring says. “I look at my patients differently now. I see them at their core.”
On Connect, meet several of the many growing families behind the PACU baby boom — and learn how the unit’s nurse management team — Lashanda Baker, BSN, RN, CMSRN; Katherine Kois, MSN, RN, PCCN; Ashley O’Keefe, MSN, RN, CNL; Anika Spry, MSN, RN, CPAN; Michael Wald, BSN, RN, PED-BC; and Charge Nurse Christin Child, BSN, RN, CEN — is supporting them through their experiences.

Care Options and Locations
Virginia is seeing a rise in the census of respiratory illnesses across the Commonwealth. As such, we wanted to remind team members and their patients of care options and locations if you or your patients are experiencing respiratory symptoms. Please use this information to direct patients, friends, and loved ones to receive the appropriate care:
- Urgent Care: When a sickness, pain, or injury keeps you from temporarily doing your normal activities, but isn’t an emergency, you’ll want an urgent care visit.
- Same-Day Care: When you need a primary care provider for common, less urgent conditions, but can’t get an appointment with your regular doctor today, you’ll want same-day care.
- Emergency Department (ED) Care: When you need immediate help because of a life-threatening or very serious health issue needing emergency care, call 911. Our EDs are open 24/7.
Masking: Transplant Service Line
As respiratory illness rates increase in our region, we are implementing temporary masking precautions across all transplant care areas effective immediately.
Where masking is required:
- 5 South inpatient unit
- All transplant clinics
- Infusion Center
Staff expectations:
- Wear a mask when entering any inpatient room or clinic exam room.
- Wear a mask during any significant patient contact, defined as being within three feet of a patient for more than one minute, not only while providing care.
- For all admitted transplant patients (including those on 5 South and other units), please use the Protective Isolation order and select both options:
- Patient masked when leaving the room.
- Staff masked when entering the room.
Patients and visitors:
- Will be asked to wear masks while waiting in the transplant clinic waiting rooms.
Masking is optional in common work areas or other non-patient-facing spaces.
We will continue to monitor local respiratory illness trends and reassess as conditions change. Thank you for helping us protect our highly immunocompromised patients.

Flu Activity Increasing – Operational Change Effective Jan. 8
From senior leadership: As we continue to closely monitor respiratory illnesses within our community, we are seeing a steady increase in cases of influenza across the UVA Health system. To help protect our patients, staff, and visitors — the following operational changes will take effect for all hospitals beginning Thursday, Jan. 8, at 7 a.m.:
- Mandatory Masking Within Emergency Departments. All patients and visitors entering the Emergency Department will be required to wear a mask in the waiting room and continue masking until placed in a room for evaluation. In addition, all UVA Health team members also are required to mask while in the Emergency Department during any significant patient contact, defined as being within three feet of a patient for more than one minute in any area, not only while providing care. Masks and signage will be made available for placement within the Emergency Department.
In areas outside the Emergency Department, voluntary masking is strongly encouraged for both patients and team members, in particular in care settings. Respiratory illness trends will continue to be monitored across our community, and additional operational updates will be implemented as necessary. Read the full message on KnowledgeLink.

Clinical Practice Oversight Project: Document Cleanup and Hold on Requests
To strengthen how we govern clinical practice across University Medical Center, a Clinical Practice Oversight Project (CPOP) has been formed to conduct a comprehensive cleanup of existing documents and implement a more defined structure for how future documents are developed and approved. This effort — slated to last until fall 2026 — will ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, and also provide teams with clinical practices that have been consistently reviewed and approved across the organization.
Key information:
- To kick off this project, a document cleanup process is underway and expected to last through the spring. During this time, requests for new documents are temporarily on hold to allow our teams to focus on reviewing, updating, and/or appropriately archiving existing documents.
- Exceptions to this temporary hold will be considered only when a written document is required for regulatory compliance or when there is an urgent, time-sensitive, patient safety or institutional need. To submit an exception, please use the document request form.
- Following the cleanup efforts, we will work to establish a more sustainable practice governance and oversight process which will be foundational in ensuring safe and consistent care across our teams.
Questions about this project? Reference FAQs, which will be updated as information becomes available. Additionally, you may reach out to your administrator, who has been tasked to lead cleanup efforts for their areas.

Video Series | Research in Motion
Have you been keeping up with this weekly series? Researchers answer three questions: What do you do? What do you love about your research? How will it impact human health? View the latest:
- Anny Xiaobo Zhou, PhD (pictured) | "Our research program aims to characterize the function of genetic variants identified from genome-wide association studies, therefore, designing novel drug targets to treat lung diseases."
- Thomas Platts-Mills, MD | "We do research on allergic disease in my clinic, measuring IgE antibodies to many different allergens, including allergens that we first identified here."
- Gordon Laurie, PhD | "There are no effective treatments for many chronic diseases. One approach is an unbiased screen. We did this to address the most common eye disease and discovered a new protein that we named Lacritin. We have now successfully taken Lacritin into a large clinical trial, with two more underway."
- Zhenqi Liu, MD | "I’m a clinical endocrinologist treating patients with a variety of hormonal disorders, including diabetes. My laboratory is focused on how insulin works in the body, including vasculature and skeletal muscle, trying to understand the molecular mechanisms so that we can find treatment for it."
Thank you to these researchers — and all our colleagues who advance medical knowledge — for conducting research that shapes the medicine we deliver tomorrow, and how we deliver it. Watch new Research in Motion videos every Friday on Connect.

Emergency Management recently updated the Red Book, which includes an emergency contact page and basic response procedures for team members to use during emergency events. All team members are required to be familiar with the Red Book for their area, including location, contents, layout, and when it is to be used. To best serve our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their healthcare experience. Below is a selection of feedback praising our team members:
- "Dr. Robinson did a fantastic job of doing the tests required and minimizing pain, keeping me informed, arranging for a comfortable chair — just a very, very good bedside manner!”
- "A nurse not assigned to my care saw my wife sitting alone during my procedure and stopped to ask if she was OK, and if she needed or wanted anything. That small act of kindness meant more to both of us than your staff will ever know.”
- "Dr. Hoeg is wonderful. She is attentive, caring, and calm. I really appreciate her ability to fully understand my needs and create a plan accordingly. She always asks my thoughts and input on decisions that need to be made, and I feel confident about the care choices we make together. Thank you!”
Thank you to our team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care!
