‘Medicine Is My Passion’: SMLP Inspires Undergrads From Underrepresented Backgrounds to Achieve Dreams
UVA School of Medicine’s Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion hosted 40 pre-med undergraduates from across the country at its six-week Summer Medical Leadership Program (SMLP). “A common thread that links them are the significant challenges they’ve overcome to get to where they are,” says Taison D. Bell, MD, MBA, UVA associate professor of medicine who leads the program along with Ashley Woodard, MS, of SOM’s Office of DEI. He adds that the main goal is “to show our students they are capable of achieving their dream of becoming physician leaders.”

World Lung Cancer Day Is Aug. 1: Get Screened!
Did you know that according to the American Cancer Society (ACS), lung cancer is the second most diagnosed cancer — but the most common cause of cancer death? And that cigarette smoking accounts for about 80 percent of lung cancer cases and deaths? Other exposures include secondhand smoke, radon, asbestos, and air pollution. The American Lung Association (ALA) reports 541,000 Americans living today have been diagnosed with lung cancer at some point in their lives and in 2023, only eight percent of the high-risk population in Virginia has been screened.
“At UVA Health, we’re trying to increase awareness and get more people into screening,” says Aimee Strong (pictured with radiologist Mike Hanley, MD, at a 2022 event). She’s been working on the UVA Health Lung Cancer Screening Program since 2017. “Lung cancer diagnosed at an early stage provides a significantly higher survival rate. Most of the patients I see in my clinic were in their teens when they started smoking — it was a different time.” Watch this video as Aimee explains what happens during a screening.
Aimee also reminds us that UVA Health and the community offer great cessation support services. But even if a smoker isn’t ready to quit, they should still get a screening, which is easy and covered 100% by Medicare and most private health insurance.
More good news: ACS reports recent advancements in treatment are leading to longer survival for lung cancer patients. Read on the Healthy Balance blog about how screening saved a life.
On World Lung Cancer Day tomorrow, and year-round, we thank UVA Health team members for their dedication to increasing lung cancer awareness — and to saving lives!

Operating Room Admitting Lobby Moves
On Monday, July 24, the operating room (OR) admitting lobby — registration for direct admissions — moved to the second floor and is now located in the OR and procedure check-in area. It can be found across from the link to the parking garage. Financial counselors now occupy the first-floor lobby office that is located with the Preanesthesia Evaluation and Testing Center (PETC).
This move will be easier for our patients, as they now have one location for inpatient and OR procedures. It is also helpful for patients to meet with financial counselors face-to-face to discuss financial assistance, estimates, and billing options.

‘They’re Like Family’
Chesapeake, Virginia, mother of five Kelly Curvin credits UVA Health team members and a living donor with saving her baby’s life. A Norfolk hospital diagnosed Josie with liver failure then transferred her to UVA Health, where she was diagnosed with bile duct disease. At UVA Health’s Charles O. Strickler Transplant Center, Josie became one of 20,000 people waiting for a liver transplant in the United States.
Josie’s emotional journey to finding a living donor, who make up only 10% of pediatric liver transplants across the country, is featured in a new UVA Health video, along with the outcome of her 10-hour transplant surgery and her family’s gratitude for the living donor and the UVA Health team.
“Donors are, of course, the heroes of the transplant … but living donors are giving of themselves in the most ultimate way,” says Anita Sites, nurse practitioner.
“They started out as, you know, doctors and nurses, but we’ve spent a lot of time together, so they’re like family,” says Kelly.
Watch the powerful video, which also features Frank DiPaolo, MD, pediatric hepatologist; Nicholas Goldaracena, MD, liver transplant surgeon; and Christina Miller, living donor.

‘They Make Me Feel Valued’
The U.S. Department of Defense has presented the Patriot Award to Kris Blackstone, nurse manager, and Jessica McVey, assistant nurse manager. The honor recognizes employers for supporting “citizen warriors” through flexible schedules, time off pre- and post-deployment, family care, leaves of absence, etc.
Ashley Smith — Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) travel nurse and Army National Guard Company Commander, 335th Medical Detachment, Fort Story, Virginia — says it was an easy decision to nominate Kris and Jessica. “From the beginning of my contract, the MICU team has been outstanding and very understanding of my military schedule. They make me feel valued.”
“As a community and as Americans, we want to be able to support the needs of our military friends in their service,” explains Kris, whose father was in the U.S. Navy. “It’s not me out there — it’s them. Whatever we can do to help them, the better.”
Congratulations to Kris and Jessica on receiving the award, and thank you to Ashley for her service! Read more on Connect.

“Nicest, Most Caring, Considerate People I've Ever Met” | Kudos for Our UVA Health Colleagues
To provide the best possible service and care for our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their recent healthcare experience. Below is a small selection of recent feedback praising our outstanding team members:
- “Please give my sincere thanks to my anesthesiologist. He listened to the fact that anesthesia causes me significant migraines post procedure, said he could care for that, and he did! I am so grateful. Having surgery is stressful enough; having a migraine when you wake up is even more exhausting. I appreciate his attention to detail very much. Thank you!”
- “I was very nervous as my son is non-verbal and had no idea how this would work. The tech, tech aide, and nurse were all very calm and reassuring and made sure [my son] was comfortable. I'm so grateful for the team at UVA Imaging. Thank you.”
- “The people working at UVA Medical Center are the nicest, most caring, considerate people I've ever met. From the surgeon and his team, the pain team doctors, nurses, CNAs [certified nursing assistants], people who served me food and cleaned my room, I was made to feel like I was the only person in the world that they had to look out for and I was made to feel very special.”
- “Let me tell you, I just fell in love with Dr. Yates! This is a man who is extremely well-qualified for his position! Not only is he a people person, he is also a top-tier specialist. He explained to me exactly what he was going to be doing regarding the injection in my eye. He explained to me the downsides ... [and] the benefits of this procedure. In no way did he influence me one way or the other ... it was totally my decision. His bedside manner was wonderful! This man is an asset to this eye clinic and to UVA Health!”
- “I love UVA Health and all of the staff who work there. I have been an oncology patient since 2018. Everyone from housekeeping to all of the specialists that I have seen have been awesome. I love, love, love, love UVA. Go Hoos!”
Thanks to all our team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care.

UVA Study Will Help New Moms in Bangladesh Recover From Anemia
The process of childbirth drains the blood of iron, adding to postpartum fatigue, which can lead to life-threatening anemia in up to 25% of new mothers. UVA Health’s Dr. William Petri recently returned from Saidpur, Bangladesh, where he and two doctoral candidates spent a week setting the stage for a hospital trial to combat postpartum anemia. The new medical protocols at the country’s LAMB Hospital start this week.
Anemia can lead to increased infections, irregular heartbeat, trouble breathing, and other potentially life-threatening problems. The researchers want to see how much they can improve health and wellness measures through the administration of intravenous iron treatment.
Thank you to Dr. Petri and his team for this outstanding work. Read the full story on Connect.

“Outstanding Experience” | Kudos for Our UVA Health Colleagues
To provide the best possible service and care for our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their recent healthcare experience. Below is a small selection of recent feedback praising our team members:
- “I had an outstanding experience from start to finish. The nurses, doctors, and staff were so courteous and really thoughtful. I appreciate that they had me explain my procedure in my own words to make sure I understood it thoroughly. They checked on my physical comfort and emotional well-being multiple times throughout my stay. I also really admire how inclusive your hospital is — asking everyone for their pronouns, promoting safety and open conversation with rainbow pins ... Not only does that communicate respect, but it invites open and honest conversation about any and all points relevant to medical care. Well done!”
- “The nurse assigned to me was Duncan. He is awesome. My husband decided to have his upcoming colonoscopy at UVA because of the great care I received from Duncan.”
- “The hospital staff worked well together. They were all there, ready to go on the 4th of July, no less! I was especially impressed with the professionalism and knowledge of the test equipment operators, both for ultrasound and NMR [nuclear magnetic resonance] imaging. The young physicians and medical students that I got to interact with had the professional maturity I would have expected of someone with much longer experience. I especially would like to commend a young resident, Dr. Marika Rayala. She took charge of my case and did an excellent job helping me understand the big picture of my stroke, its prognosis, and treatment.”
- “I never give 100% very good [on surveys], but UVA Medical deserves every one given and more. Dr. Sheehan and all staff are exceptional and we are seriously considering returning for a six-month exam, although I could have done in San Antonio, Texas.”
Thanks to all our team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care.

UVA Health, Riverside Health System Announce New Strategic Alliance
UVA Health and Riverside Health System in Eastern Virginia announced a new partnership that will build on UVA Health’s institutional strengths and expertise to deliver advanced, specialized care to patients throughout the state of Virginia. Working together, our two health systems will now partner and collaborate across multiple areas, including clinical program development, research, and graduate medical education. Our first collaborative clinical service will be a joint cardiothoracic surgery program at Riverside Health System’s flagship hospital in Newport News where a broad range of cardiothoracic surgical services will be offered. As we move forward with our collaboration, UVA Health and Riverside Health System will continue to enhance care coordination between our two institutions across several care areas, including adult and pediatric transplantation and advanced cancer treatments.

Appreciation
“A Blessing in This Whole Experience” | Kudos for Our UVA Health Colleagues
To provide the best possible service and care for our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their recent healthcare experience. Below is a small selection of recent feedback praising our outstanding team members:
- “Child Life — Darcy. This experience would've been completely different without Darcy. She took the time to build rapport with my child, and walk her through two procedures with pictures and child-friendly language. She was amazing and my child still talks about her. I am so thankful to Darcy — she is a vital piece of your ED team! If I saw her again, I would become a puddle of tears and give her the biggest hug. She was such a blessing in this whole experience.”
- “I've been a patient at many of the top-rated healthcare facilities — including the Mayo Clinic and Johns Hopkins — I've never had better care than at the UVA inpatient and outpatient facilities. Very impressed!”
- “Dr. Wilder always makes the experience incredibly positive because he finds a solution to the problem and it is 100% correct! His passion and empathy are so much appreciated. For several months I have been in pain and he found the cause and treatment, as he always does! Trustful and empathetic, knowledgeable physicians are hard to find. He considers the whole person’s needs.”
- “Wow!! Dr. Stump was worth the five-month wait! So informative! I was really impressed when she came in and said she had read my file. Usually when going to a new doctor they ask me what am I there for? Or how can I help you? She listened to me, then gave me her expertise on which direction she thought I would benefit more from. I was/am so excited because she totally explained everything and wanted to make sure I was OK with it. So friendly, patient, and a great listener. I am so glad I have her for a doctor now!”
Thanks to all our team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care.

Same-Day Clinic Aims to Boost Patient Access, Reduce Readmissions
UVA Health’s newest Ambulatory clinic has a unique mission: to provide same-day care to patients with minor acute illness and/or injury. Slated to open July 11 in the former COVID-19 clinic location at 1222 Jefferson Park Avenue, the Same-Day Clinic represents an innovative approach to increasing patient access while reducing hospital readmissions. Initially, the clinic will support patients referred from the Emergency Department, Continuum Home Health, and Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy (OPAT) for nurse visits to address acute care needs (such as infusions, wound care, etc.).
Later this summer, the clinic will expand services to primary care patients seeking same-day appointments and patients referred by the in-home monitoring (IHM) program operated by Population Health. The Same-Day Clinic is the first of its kind at UVA Health and directly supports the One Future Together | Health and Hope for All Strategic Plan initiatives to radically improve patient access and deliver superior patient care.

“A Leader of the People”: Mike Starr
This month’s “Leadership Matters Because People Matter” conversation with Wendy Horton, UVA Health University Medical Center CEO, features Mike Starr.
He began his UVA Health career in the Perfusion Department 1989-94, then left for medical sales before returning as a vendor in 2015. He was later hired as a UVA Health linen services manager, and soon promoted to manager of supply chain and logistics of the Medical Center and surrounding clinics. During COVID-19, Mike and his team members set up vaccination clinics on- and off-site, built COVID-19 units, and relocated ICUs.
“I tend to lead by example,” says Mike when asked by Wendy about his leadership philosophy. “We’re here for the patients … all the clinicians … they can’t do anything if our team isn’t getting the supplies up and in their hands at the right time.”
Watch to learn the interesting ways Mike initially found Charlottesville, met his future spouse at work, and has gone out of his way — even on his days off — to support colleagues.

Welcome to Culpeper, Mr. President!
On Monday, June 26, Jeff Say, UVA Health Culpeper’s manager of community engagement, introduced President Joe Biden at an event addressing the importance of broadband internet connectivity. Before transitioning to his role with UVA Health, Jeff was the Culpeper Chamber of Commerce CEO and vocal about challenges in receiving high-speed internet in his community. Internet infrastructure is an administration priority for President Biden, who had visited Culpeper, especially regarding providing seamless healthcare, and heard stories from the community about the problem.
U.S. Rep. Abigail Spanberger’s office contacted the chamber’s new President/CEO Amy Frazier, looking to connect Jeff with the administration about the possibility of giving some remarks at the White House about Culpeper’s long-standing broadband issues.
“It was really exciting for me to be able to represent Culpeper and advocate fiercely for broadband for all because it really is a utility not a luxury," Jeff told the Culpeper Times.
Thank you, Jeff, for speaking up for your community and for those who tirelessly work to provide healthcare to the community. Your voice is heard and appreciated!
