UVA Health Update | March 2026

Celebrating National Doctors' Day

doctors' day banner

Today, we come together to honor National Doctors' Day — a moment set aside each year to recognize the extraordinary dedication of our doctors and to express how deeply grateful we are for everything they do. Day in and day out, our doctors are transforming lives through exceptional patient care, pushing medicine forward through groundbreaking research, and investing in the next generation of physicians — all while being an invaluable part of the UVA Health family.

Watch this video, which captures the story of one patient whose life was changed forever by the care received at UVA Health. Teams: Recognize a UVA Health doctor by sending a personal note of appreciation. Read the full leadership message

Hand Sanitizer Dispenser Site Assessments

April 7-9 | The Inpatient Hand Hygiene project is aligned with our systemwide transition to a new hand hygiene product vendor, GOJO (Purell products). The first phase involves conducting a current-state assessment to evaluate the placement of existing wall‑mounted and pump hand sanitizer dispensers. Due to the large number of locations, the vendor is unable to assign a specific appointment time for each unit/department. Instead, the assessment team will conduct roving visits to units and departments. Please ensure that a leader or designee is available during the assessment. Thank you in advance for your flexibility — every effort will be made to accommodate unexpected delays and ensure each clinic is visited. A member from the Infection Prevention team will accompany the vendor representatives. Schedule:

If your site has any known conflicts that may prevent the assessment team from completing the visit, please contact the Hand Hygiene Coalition

Epic Care Everywhere Referral Management

Launches Tuesday, April 14 | UVA Health will soon launch Care Everywhere Referral Management (CERM), Epic’s integrated solution for referrals between Epic organizations. This enhancement represents a meaningful step in strengthening referral management across UVA Health and other Epic sites using CERM — shifting from manual processes to a fully integrated digital experience that streamlines referral capture, routing, and timeliness; reduces leakage; and improves conversion of existing demand — while creating a more seamless pathway for clinicians and patients.

To prepare for this launch, access/scheduling staff must visit the Epic Learning Library (ELL) to complete required training beginning April 2. Provider tip sheets and other reference materials will also be available in the ELL beginning April 2. Watch your email for additional training information coming soon.

Thanks to all our providers, access team members, and ambulatory operations leaders for your partnership as we continue improving care coordination and access for the patients we serve.

Match Day 2026

105 Photos | School of Medicine Class of 2026 Celebrates Match Day

UVA School of Medicine students celebrated Match Day on March 20, 2026, a significant milestone in their medical career journey.

After years of demanding coursework and rigorous clinical training, Match Day is the moment students learn where they will complete their residency program. Held annually at medical schools across the country, the event is filled with excitement, anticipation, and emotion as soon-to-be physicians take the next major step in their profession.

The Class of 2026 matched into 25 different specialties across 29 different states and the District of Columbia, with 30 students matching at UVA for some or all of their residency training. Their placements reflect both the breadth of medical interests within the class and the strength of their training at the School of Medicine.

Congratulations to the Class of 2026 — and thank you to all the faculty and staff who help them on their medical education journey! Read more and see photos on Connect

Phenomenal Work

Good news from the UVA Safety and Security Subcommittee — which has representation from 10 departments across UVA Health. Data on patient and visitor falls related to the environment shows there were only four such incidents in January. That’s low, considering central Virginia was relatively frozen in what some observers dubbed “snowcrete” — snow packed in by ice for more than a week, making for treacherous movement.

“At face value, this data suggests Facilities Management did a great job clearing the snow and ice, which they did; however, this is also a testament to all our team members who reported unsafe conditions to Facilities Management via the online portal or by calling 434.924.2267,”  says C. Hunter Martin, CSP, Safety Officer, Facilities Planning and Capitol Development.

Thank you to UVA Facilities Management and UVA Health System Physical Plant (HSPP) — which collaborated on snow removal depending on location — for their phenomenal work on the sidewalks and crosswalks around UVA Health to keep our team members, patients and families, visitors, community members, first responders, and more safe during the storm!

Karen Forsman

Celebrating Karen Forsman as She Retires April 25

After 42 remarkable years of service to UVA Health, Karen Forsman will officially retire on April 25, 2026. Forsman has been the cornerstone of the Heart and Vascular Service Line since its founding in 1994, and her contributions over three decades have shaped the program into the nationally recognized center of excellence it is today. Her unwavering commitment to exceptional patient care, steady leadership through decades of growth, and spirit of collaboration have left a lasting imprint on our team, our patients, and the broader UVA Health community.

Forsman's dedication has touched countless lives — patients who received world-class cardiac care, and colleagues who were mentored and inspired by her example. We are deeply grateful for everything she has given this program and wish her a retirement every bit as fulfilling as her career.

As we honor Forsman's legacy, we are excited to welcome Laura P. Thielemann, MPA, who joins UVA Health Heart and Vascular Services as Administrator on April 6. We look forward to her building on the incredibly strong foundation Forsman has laid — please join us in sending her off with all the gratitude and celebration she so richly deserves.

UVA Community Health’s Award-Winning Morrison Team Serves Up Food and Fellowship

Praise for our Food and Nutrition Services team members, staffed through Morrison Healthcare, can be heard consistently across the board — from morning huddles to patient appreciation letters. Our team members and patients are impacted positively by Morrison and their combination of quality food and great service.

For some patients, hospital stays can be scary and uncomfortable, and providing clinical care can be challenging — in these conditions, food and empathetic service can make a big difference in someone’s experience, allowing them to feel more welcome, relaxed, or appreciated. The personal touches and connections that our Morrison teams so often go out of their way to make, play a key role in our team member and patient satisfaction.

Reminder: Use Outlets and Break Room Appliances Safely

Unattended microwaves and unsafe outlet use can create fire risks and trigger fire alarms. A quick refresh on best practices helps protect our shared spaces, reduce disruptions, and keep everyone safe.

Please stay nearby when heating food, especially popcorn. Plug microwaves and other appliances directly into wall outlets — never into power strips or extension cords. Establish a regular safety routine of checking to verify that appliances and outlets are being used correctly. For more guidance, review the safety information in your unit’s Red Book.

Managers can prepare by reviewing their team org chart in Workday to validate their direct reports are listed accurately.

A report is available in Workday to help this process. Simply search “My Team Member's Supervisory Organizations for Validation” in the Workday search bar to access the report.

To ensure appropriate time for changes to be processed and inputted into Workday, we ask all leaders with direct reports to take a moment to review your team org chart in Workday and confirm reporting structures are accurate with your HR Business Partner by end of day March 18, 2026. If you require additional time, please notify your HR Business Partner. Our goal is to have any updates noted in Workday no later than March 20. We appreciate your partnership with these teams as they prepare the systemwide data for the survey.

Team Members Share Feedback on Winter Storm Operations

In the face of a severe winter storm in January, UVA Health employees stepped up to the challenge. Over several days of hazardous conditions, you kept our University Medical Center running smoothly, maintained safe operations in and around the hospital, and cared for our patients and each other. Thank you again!

Following the storm, the operations team distributed a survey to gather feedback on what went well and where we have opportunities to improve. More than 1,400 team members took time to respond. Overall, the feedback was positive, with team members also identifying some areas to strengthen. Read more on Connect

Fontaine Parking Update

Fontaine Garage

Thank you for your patience while we adjust to parking at Fontaine. We understand that several team members have reported issues with space availability and congestion during entry and exiting.

Please be aware that there is ample parking availability on all levels of the Fontaine Parking Garage. We advise teams to ensure they are pursuing parking on all levels, including the ground floor. Additionally, to help keep traffic flowing in the garage, be aware that there is a ramp to your left upon entering the garage that allows drivers to bypass lower levels that may be full and move directly to upper levels of the garage.

Throughout the week, the Parking and Transportation team, along with University Police and Security, will be on site to support traffic flow and assist team members during this transition. We have been keeping tabs on the commute times for shuttle service. At this time, we have determined an average commute time of 23 minutes, which varies during peak hours. If you would like to provide feedback on your Fontaine Garage or Purple Line experience, please email parking@virginia.edu

If so, it would be prudent to discuss a medication plan with them to ensure optimal medical care while they observe this holy month. Read more on Connect.

“STICU will always hold such a special place in my heart!” writes Gillespie. “The entire team — from nurses, techs, doctors, nurse practitioners, and everybody else in between — has been beyond amazing!” She took the time and care to cite specific examples for more than a dozen team members in her nomination, which you can see, along with photos, on Connect.

“This recognition is not about an isolated moment — it reflects the compassionate, patient- and family-centered care you provide consistently, every day," says Jessica Alford, RN, MSN, CCRN, Manager of the STICU and the Surgical Intermediate Care Unit (SIMU) — both of which also earned the prestigious Beacon Award for Excellence in 2025.

Congratulations!

UVA Health Discovery Advances in STAT Madness

STAT Madness

UVA School of Medicine researchers have advanced to the second round of a nationwide contest that pits elite research institutions against each other to crown 2025’s biggest biomedical breakthrough. The winner is being decided by public vote. Vote daily in in STAT’s online bracket

STAT Madness is an online tournament, akin to the NCAA basketball tournament, sponsored each year by prominent health news site STAT to spotlight the nation’s most important and influential scientific research. Sixty-four contenders face off in rounds until there is only one left standing.

In the tournament’s first round, a long COVID discovery by UVA’s Jie Sun, PhD, and colleagues ousted a COVID vaccine finding from MD Anderson Cancer Center. Read more on Connect

Survey: Help Shape Our Values

As communicated last fall, UVA Health is going through the process of evaluating the ASPIRE values. As part of this process, leadership at UVA Health is launching a series of new opportunities for team members to share their feedback — beginning with a brief UVA Health Values Survey — as part of a broader commitment to listening, learning, and investing meaningfully in the organization’s culture.  This confidential survey only takes a few minutes to complete and is available through March 20 at 11:59 p.m.

The confidential survey is designed to benchmark awareness, familiarity, and receptivity to UVA Health’s ASPIRE values. It represents the first step in a broader, multi-month effort to better understand how we can strengthen and invest in our culture — from ensuring our values resonate in daily work to identifying meaningful opportunities to grow team member engagement and satisfaction. Health Workforce Wellbeing Day

Wednesday, March 18 | Health Workforce Wellbeing Day (HWWB) was established by the National Academy of Medicine to drive collective action and raise awareness about the clinician burnout crisis. Healthcare organizations nationwide embraced the day, with events recognizing the inaugural day in 2024 taking place across the United States. Related events will occur throughout March each year. Learn more.

Supporting health workers means taking action — not just celebrating them. Healthcare institutions, policies, systems, and leaders are making measurable progress to reduce burnout and support the wellbeing of those who provide care. But ongoing uncertainty threatens our national progress. Clinician wellbeing must remain a strategic priority— because a healthy workforce means healthy patients and communities.

At UVA Health, the Office of Team Wellbeing and a multidisciplinary planning team have organized HWWB Day events as part of our ongoing efforts to address clinician burnout and improve the wellbeing of our healthcare teams. We invite all team members to participate on March 18 and in future events that support our ability to do our best work together:

Team Members Looking Out for One Another

Jessica James, Psychometrist, Neuropsychology Assessment Clinic, recently reached out to the Internal Communications team to share a colleague’s kindness:

“I had just pulled up in front of the Collins Wing [of the West Complex] to try and quickly load up boxes from my office — as I am in the process of moving, which is stressful — before making it across town to a doctor's appointment.

“When I got out of the car, a man walking by pointed out that my tire was flat, and then offered to change it for me, despite being dressed in work clothes. He saw I was overwhelmed by this unexpected turn of events and kept the most calming presence about him. He told me to get the rest of the boxes and that he’ll have the tire changed by the time I returned. And, sure enough, he did! I made it to my appointment on time, and all was well.

“I cannot thank Matt Dickerson from Medical Education Technology enough for his generosity and immediately jumping in by — literally — rolling up his sleeves to help me!”

Please join us in giving Matt a round of applause for this outstanding care for a fellow team member. Matt: you’re a model for us all!

In close partnership with the University of Virginia, UVA Health is beginning the design phase for OneUVA Workday, a multi-year business operations transformation effort intended to evolve our clinical and administrative support functions into a single, unified platform.

Beyond a simple technology update, this initiative focuses on four key areas through 2028: implementing Workday as a modern integrated platform, optimizing our sourcing and purchasing, refining administrative processes, and designing an operating model that fosters seamless coordination between every entity. By streamlining our work, we will build the financial and overall business process resilience necessary to reinvest in our core missions of patient care, research, and innovation, ultimately creating a more transparent and sustainable future for our teams, patients, and communities. Read more on Connect and review the FAQs

University Medical Center Capacity Operations (Bed and Transfer) Center: Relocation Update

We are pleased to share an important milestone in strengthening patient progression across UVA Health University Medical Center. As part of our strategy to build a systemwide Capacity Command Center, we have relocated University Medical Center Capacity Operations (Bed and Transfer) Center to Town Center 1 at Northfork. This larger, scalable space strengthens the operational foundation needed to support the continued growth and expansion of clinical services across UVA Health.

This move is a critical step toward realizing a centralized Capacity Command Center model where teams work together in real time, leveraging live data to enhance communication, improve transfer efficiency, optimize bed utilization, improve care coordination, and streamline the patient experience from entry through discharge — 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

By integrating smart tools and connected systems, we aim to simplify our clinical and support teams’ work, while creating the smoothest possible journey for patients and their families. Our goal is clear: ensuring every patient receives the right care, in the right place, at the right time.

This milestone directly supports UVA Health strategic priorities:

This transition required tremendous teamwork. Thank you to the University Medical Center Bed and Transfer Center team and our partners across operations, IT, facilities, and support services for ensuring a seamless move and uninterrupted operations.

Together, we are building a stronger operational foundation — one that improves access, supports future growth, and ensures our patients move safely and efficiently through their care journey at UVA Health.

Learn more

World HPV Awareness Day

Wednesday, March 4 | HPV Vaccination rates in Virginia continue to remain below the national Healthy People 2030 goal of 80%, leaving many adolescents at risk for HPV-related cancers. While HPV vaccination recommendations have evolved over time, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends initiating the HPV vaccine series at ages 11-12, with the option to start as early as age 9. The HPV vaccine is most protective when given on time, and a strong provider recommendation is one of the most effective strategies for increasing uptake. Providers are encouraged to routinely recommend HPV vaccination and offer it alongside other routine immunizations to help protect more Virginians from preventable cancers. Read more about World HPV Awareness Day.

Zack Landsman and Elly Zaryzksi

New Sustainability Art Exhibit by Former UVA Health Patient Provides Hope at Work — and Beyond

When Zack Landsman’s lung collapsed in 2018, he became an inpatient for two weeks at UVA Health University Medical Center. “Going on walks was extremely hard,” he recalls, “but needed.” Admiring the art on the walls — during walks around the hospital with his mother — helped sustain his determination to recover.

Full circle as eight years later, Zack’s sustainability art — "Waste Not: The Art of Plastic Recycling" — is in the spotlight on the hospital's second floor lobby mezzanine from March 2 to May 4 (including Earth Month!) — to be enjoyed by other patients and their families, visitors, and team members.

In 2023, Zack started Junk Labz, with fellow UVA Systems Engineering alum Elly Zaryzksi (pictured above, left), to recycle No. 5 plastic waste from 30+ research labs — mostly at UVA School of Medicine and some around Charlottesville — to reduce shipping emissions and landfilled plastic, improve transparency, and create long lasting, unique “designz” from recycled plastic.
