Water Main Break: After-Action Review
On Monday, Aug. 24, a water main broke on Jefferson Park Avenue, resulting in dramatically increased travel times. While this event was unforeseen, leadership recognizes how frustrating and disruptive it was for UVA Health team members, particularly during rush hour as team members were leaving the garages. We also recognize our responsibility to help minimize the impact on our team members when unexpected situations like this occur. The Emergency Management team will be putting together an after-action review to understand how we can improve the response and coordination with University Police Department and City of Charlottesville for any future events. As we learn more about how we can improve, we will report back.

'I Want Them to Know How Much I Appreciate Them!' | Kudos to Our UVA Health Colleagues
To best serve our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their healthcare experience. Below is a selection of feedback praising our team members:
- "Dr. Ryan Smith was extremely helpful and accommodating throughout the process. You can tell he believes in the work he does and is making a positive difference in the world. He went out of his way by making our initial visit virtual because he saw we were coming from [outside Charlottesville]. He kept me informed and checked in via MyChart messaging, and checked in after the surgery. Great doc!”
- "Should I ever have another echo, I will request Angela! She should be recognized by management for the exceptional quality of care she provides.”
- "Nurses Jill and Katie on the fifth floor were amazing. They both were kind, answered all my questions, and went above and beyond while I was there. I want them to know how much I appreciate them!”
- “Jose in physical therapy is so knowledgeable. He has been — and continues to be — the most important part of my shoulder replacement recovery. I’m truly grateful to have his help. He is important in that PT room.”
Thank you to our team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care!

Reflecting on 2026 UVA Community Health Magnet® Site Visit
The Magnet Recognition Program® recognizes healthcare organizations for quality patient care, interdisciplinary collaboration, nursing excellence, and innovations in professional nursing practice. Developed by American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) — Magnet® is the leading source of successful evidence-based nursing practices and strategies worldwide.
From July 27-29, UVA Health Prince William Medical Center hosted three Magnet appraisers and one Magnet appraiser candidate, as the final step toward our third Magnet designation. The appraisal process, which occurs every four years, involves intense planning and teamwork, and we want to acknowledge and celebrate the work each one of our team members put into this process.
As Center of Nursing Excellence Manager Devon Richardson, MSN, RN, CEN, explains, “The success of a Magnet site visit is built on teamwork and collaboration. Open communication, trust, and a shared commitment to excellence allowed our teams to adapt in real time and showcase the outstanding care and culture that define Prince William Medical Center. Our experience reinforced that while the Magnet process evaluates nursing excellence, it is truly the collective efforts of the entire organization that make a successful site visit possible.” Read more on Connect.

'Deserves a Commendation' | Kudos to Our UVA Health Colleagues
To best serve our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their healthcare experience. Below is a selection of feedback praising our team members:
- "The anesthesiologist (last name Cooper) was outstanding in listening to and caring about my past concerns with anesthesia. He provided a plan and gave me extra attention. The nurses on the staff were also outstanding. I was made to feel like their only patient, and I am grateful for all of them. Thank you!”
- "High praise for nurse Julia Kelly. She was very attentive and friendly, always keeping us comfortable and updated on progress during procedure prep. After the procedure was completed, she was right there again to make sure everything was OK and that I was having no issues until I was discharged. She deserves a commendation for what I thought was going above and beyond!”
- "This is absolutely, without a doubt, the best care provider and team I have ever experienced in my life. Dr. Casey and team are absolute professionals, truly cared about me as an individual, and embody what a doctor should try to be. Physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and all nurses and team members — including the front office — were all competent, professional, and kind-hearted.”
Thank you to our team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care!

First Robotic Cardiac Surgery Marks Milestone for UVA Health
UVA Health reached a major milestone on July 31, 2026, when its first robotic cardiac surgery case was successfully performed at University Medical Center, marking the launch of a dedicated robotic cardiac surgery program.
Led by Michael E. Ibrahim, MD, PhD, Director of Robotic Cardiac Surgery, the procedure represents a new chapter in innovative cardiac care and expands access to minimally invasive treatment options for patients across the region.
While robotic surgery has been used in multiple specialties for more than 20 years, cardiac surgery has been slower to adopt the technology because of the complexity of heart procedures. Robotic cardiac surgery offers several benefits for eligible patients, including smaller incisions, less postoperative pain, fewer complications, and a faster return to regular activities of daily living. Patients typically experience accelerated recovery, with hospital stays as short as three days, compared to a week or more with conventional cardiac surgery. Read more on Connect.

USB Device Blocking now in Clinical Workstations and Emergency Department
To strengthen our cyberdefenses, UVA Health has begun blocking the use of USB storage devices (e.g., “thumb” drives and other external storage drives) on all UVA Health-issued personal computers (PCs). The next implementation phase began Aug. 11 and included all Ambulatory clinic workstations at University Medical Center clinics, as well as Emergency Department workstations and patient rooms. See Connect for a detailed schedule.
If you’re wondering if USB storage devices are blocked on your PC, HIT has deployed a desktop tray icon to indicate your computer's status: 1) blocked, 2) exception granted, or 3) policy not yet implemented. See the FAQs on Connect for more. As a reminder, instead of USB devices, team members should use their Microsoft OneDrive cloud storage account for secure data storage and sharing. This change does not affect USB-connected mice, keyboards, phone chargers, or similar accessories.
HIT Launches New Portal for Remote Access to Epic and Other Applications
As part of HIT’s commitment to providing you with the modern tools that our work demands, UVA Health is transitioning to a new platform for accessing applications (including Epic) remotely. The UVA Health Citrix Applications Portal (“Citrix Portal”) is live and will replace the UVA Health Apps Portal (“Apps Portal” or “Portal”). The new Citrix Portal platform is more secure, streamlined, and delivers more consistent connectivity than our current Apps Portal. For now, both portals are available, but the Apps Portal will be retired and redirected to the new Citrix Portal on Aug. 15, so be sure to bookmark the new Citrix Portal and begin using it now. Users of the new Citrix Portal will notice a slightly modified design and a new web address (URL), but the way you access apps remotely (including Epic) will remain the same. Learn more on Connect.

'So Kind and Supportive' | Kudos to Our UVA Health Colleagues
To best serve our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their healthcare experience. Below is a selection of feedback praising our team members:
- "I have now had three procedures at UVA Health and all my experiences have been exceptional! You have excellent people working in very efficient systems, and the result is excellent care for patients. Dr. Ibilibor and her team were fantastic, and I knew I was being cared for by the very best people. My two nurses were also great and went above and beyond to help me during my overnight recovery!”
- "Dr. Igbani, the anesthesiologist, really took the time to listen to my previous anesthesia experiences and adjusted her approach based on them to address my concerns. She was very clear in describing what she would do and why, and very friendly and confidence-inspiring. It was my best anesthesia experience. Also, the nurse I had at the time of discharge was wonderful and responsive to what I needed and questions I had, especially as situations arose. She was extremely competent, efficient, and so kind and supportive.”
- "Brecken Hentz is a rock star in my book. Kind, caring, and patient. I'm blessed to have her as my speech-language pathologist.”
- "I cannot say enough good things about UVA Health doctors and staff. I am hearing impaired and I read lips. I know it can be difficult, but everyone treated me with such respect and made sure I knew exactly what was happening. Thanks to everyone who was a part of my UVA Health experience.”
Thank you to our team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care!

Shout Out to Our Researchers!
While many at UVA Health deliver care to our patients or educate students about the delivery of such care, our colleagues conducting research shape the medicine we deliver tomorrow — and how we deliver it:
- COVID and Cancer | UVA’s Jie Sun, PhD (pictured), and colleagues find severe COVID-19 and influenza infections prime the lungs for cancer and can accelerate the disease’s development. However, vaccination heads off those harmful effects, researchers determine.
- How Keto Stops Seizures | Jaideep Kapur, MBBS, PhD, Co-director, UVA Brain Institute, and collaborators reveal how the low-carb ketogenic diet protects against epilepsy seizures and possibly neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s. The diet has been used to reduce seizures in patients with medication-resistant epilepsy since the 1920s — but without a good understanding of how it provides those benefits.
- Growing Concern About Kratom | Chris Holstege, MD, Director, UVA Health Blue Ridge Poison Center, and collaborators find that calls to poison centers about kratom, a drug widely available in vape shops and gas stations, increased more than 1,200% between 2015 and 2025, with a corresponding rise in hospitalizations. Dr. Holstege and his team play an important role in educating the public about such emerging public health concerns.
- Better Drug Design | UVA’s Nikolay V. Dokholyan, PhD, and colleagues develop a suite of artificial intelligence-powered tools — called YuelDesign, YuelPocket, and YuelBond — that work together to improve how new drugs are created and accelerate the creation of new medicines.
This is only a sampling of the research that occurs here daily — more can be found in UVA Health Newsroom. We’re grateful to these team members and to all who expand our knowledge of medical science. Thank you, researchers!

USB Device Blocking Coming to Clinic Workstations and Emergency Department
Starts Tuesday, Aug. 11 | To strengthen our cyberdefenses, UVA Health has begun blocking the use of USB storage devices (e.g., “thumb” drives and other external storage drives) on all UVA Health-issued personal computers (PCs).

UVA Health University Medical Center Announces 2026 Hand Hygiene Award Winners
Congratulations to the winners of UVA Health University Medical Center's 2026 Hand Hygiene Awards, honoring team members excelling at keeping colleagues and patients safe — and the units and teams driving down healthcare-associated infections.
Costi Sifri, MD, Director, Hospital Epidemiology, and Professor of Medicine, Infectious Diseases, and International Health, UVA School of Medicine; and Joan Buckner, MA, RN, CIC, Director of Infection Prevention and Control (IP&C), presented the second annual awards during the latest Medical Center Management Group (MCMG) meeting.
“Hand hygiene isn't incidental to quality care — it's foundational. No matter how skilled, gifted, or experienced a provider you are, you can’t deliver high-quality patient care if you don't first clean your hands,” says Dr. Sifri.
"Hand hygiene is one of the simplest, most powerful tools we have to prevent healthcare-associated infections and protect our patients and each other," explains Buckner. See the winners and read more on Connect.

'Incredibly Empathetic to My Fears' | Kudos to Our UVA Health Colleagues
To best serve our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their healthcare experience. Below is a selection of feedback praising our team members:
- "I want to especially recognize the exceptional performance of Kacey in the pre-op meetings, Kareem and Wes in pre-op procedures, and Ana and Deeba in post-op procedures. Dr. Darby was extremely effective and has assembled an outstanding team.”
- "The staff, especially Mitch and Katie, were incredibly empathetic to my fears regarding radiation. Mitch explained and reassured me with kindness, professionalism, and empathy. Some days you just need that special reassurance — that Mitch naturally takes the time to give — on crappy days.”
- "Lori Grove is an amazing person in all respects. She is available, educated, professional, dedicated to the patient, responsive, courteous, and more! I feel my hearing improvement is due to her ability to accurately assess the results of my tests and make appropriate adjustments to my two cochlear implants. U.S. News & World Report Rankings for 2026-27
U.S. News & World Report (USNWR) has released its “Best Hospitals” guide, with national and regional rankings across three categories: hospitals, specialties, and procedures and conditions. This year, VCU is ranked No. 1 in Virginia, followed by Inova Fairfax (No. 2), Sentara Norfolk and Virginia Hospital Center (tied for No. 3), and UVA Health University Medical Center and Inova Alexandria (both tied for No. 5).
University Medical Center had three specialties ranked as high performing: Cancer, Gastroenterology and GI Surgery, and Orthopedics. USNWR also introduced new Regional Specialty Rankings this year for select specialties, and University Medical Center is recognized within Virginia in Cancer (No. 1), Rehabilitation (No. 2), and Orthopedics (No. 3).
It is important to remember that with the USNWR methodology, the underlying data used for these rankings lag: specialty rankings reflect performance from 2022-24, and Procedures and Conditions reflect 2020-24. While the data and rankings are still valuable for understanding where we are doing well and where we must advance — they don’t tell the full story of what we’ve done over the last three years to improve outcomes, clinical documentation, patient progression, staffing, and reputation, all of which impact our standing. We will continue to discuss planned improvement strategies as a team over the coming year.

HIT Launches New Portal for Remote Access to Epic and Other Applications
As part of HIT’s commitment to providing you with the modern tools that our work demands, UVA Health is transitioning to a new platform for accessing applications (including Epic) remotely. The UVA Health Citrix Applications Portal (“Citrix Portal”) is live now and will replace the UVA Health Apps Portal (“Apps Portal” or “Portal”). The new Citrix Portal platform is more secure, streamlined, and deliver more consistent connectivity than our current Apps Portal.

Pediatric Clothes Donations
The acute pediatric unit is looking for more clothes donations to fill their closet, so kids have something to wear when they are admitted. The nurses on the floor have created an Amazon list for items that are needed, but they would also appreciate any gently used clothes donations.
Please note: Items should be appropriate for the hospital, such as loose onesies, loose shorts or pants, sleepers, and/or comfy clothes for school-aged and bigger kids. Donations can be delivered to the 7C or 7W nursing stations and given to Haylee Knight or Haley Godfrey.
Thank you to all who donate and to our colleagues who are organizing this effort!
