65 Photos | UVA School of Medicine Celebrates Class of 2026 at Final Exercises

On May 17, UVA School of Medicine proudly celebrated the Class of 2026 during the University’s 197th Final Exercises, marking a major milestone for graduates and their families.

After posing for photos on the steps of the historic Old Medical School, graduates took part in one of UVA’s most cherished traditions — the iconic walk from the Rotunda to Old Cabell Hall for the conferral of the degrees. The Lawn was filled with joy, pride, and anticipation as students, faculty, and friends gathered to honor years of dedication and achievement.

Across the 2025-26 academic year, UVA School of Medicine conferred degrees to 151 Doctor of Medicine, 41 Doctor of Philosophy, and 100 master’s students, reflecting the breadth of education, research, and service that define the institution.

Leadership

Robert Cantrell

Celebrating the Life of Robert Cantrell, MD

It is with deep sadness that we share news of the passing of Dr. Robert (Bob) Cantrell on April 26. Dr. Cantrell was recruited in 1976 as Fitz-Hugh Professor and Chairman of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, led the department for 20 years and trained more than 100 surgeons. He founded the renowned Fitz-Hugh Symposium that same year.

Dr. Cantrell attended the U.S. Naval Academy, served in the Navy and while stationed in Okinawa, he met his wife, Lee.

He held leadership roles with nearly every major Otolaryngology organization, was named the EVP of the American Board of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery (1990-1998) and, in 1994, was appointed by UVA President John T. Casteen to lead the UVA Health System as Acting Vice President and Provost, a role he permanently assumed in 1996 through 2001. From 2001-2004 he was appointed the Louise Nerancy Professor of Health Sciences Policy and Director of the UVA Health Policy Center. He retired in 2004.

During his tenure, Dr. Cantrell oversaw major expansion of UVA clinical and research facilities, doubled funded research for the Schools of Medicine and Nursing, and helped lead a $247 million Health System capital campaign.

An internationally respected leader in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, Dr. Cantrell authored more than 135 peer-reviewed articles and received the Harris P. Mosher Award for pioneering research on the effects of prolonged noise exposure. Deeply committed to faith and service, he often spoke on the relationship between medicine and spiritual healing.

The formal obituary for Dr. Cantrell can be found here

Celebrating a Successful Vue PACS Go-Live

A major milestone for UVA Health with the successful go-live of the Vue PACS — an advanced imaging platform that enhances how medical images are stored, accessed, and shared across the health system. By improving speed, reliability, and accessibility, Vue PACS will help streamline workflows for clinicians and support more timely, informed patient care.

command center team

“This was a tremendous team effort,” says Sonney Sapra, Chief Information Technology Officer. “I’m grateful for the professionalism and dedication that ensured a smooth transition and a positive experience for our clinicians.”

Dozens of team members contributed to the planning, execution, and around-the-clock support that made last week's go-live seamless, alongside strong leadership from Greg Wackett and Glenn Fielding and valuable partnership from Philips experts who traveled from across the country and abroad to be onsite. We are extremely grateful to the team members who spent many long hours working on this project. It would not have been possible without their dedication, skill, and knowledge.

The impact of this upgrade will be felt across the health system. “Advanced medical imaging is critical to our patients and providers,” says Cree Gaskin, interim Chair of Radiology and Medical Imaging, and Chief Medical Imaging Information Officer. “This major upgrade modernizes our ability to securely store, access, and view medical images, helping our teams deliver the best care possible.”

As UVA Health continues to invest in innovative technologies, this successful implementation represents more than a system upgrade — it’s a step forward in strengthening our digital foundation, empowering our care teams, and shaping the future of how we deliver care to our patients and communities.

Congratulations to our colleagues in the EDS and Hypermobility Disorders Center on UVA Health’s designation by The Ehlers-Danlos Society as a CORE (Collaboration, Outreach, Research, and Education) Network of Excellence. This prestigious recognition places UVA Health among a select group of leading centers worldwide, united in advancing care for patients with Ehlers-Danlos syndromes and hypermobility disorders.

“This distinction reflects a rigorous evaluation of clinical expertise, multidisciplinary care, and commitment to advancing research and education in Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS) and related disorders,” says Dacre Knight, MD, MS, FACP, Associate Professor of Medicine, Medical Director (pictured), EDS and Hypermobility Disorders Center. “For patients and referring providers, this designation signals a trusted destination for comprehensive, evidence-based care, where complex presentations receive coordinated individualized evaluation and treatment. It affirms that our center meets international standards for excellence, offering a reliable pathway for diagnosis and long-term support.”

The CORE Network of Excellence is aimed at improving the quality of care and increasing awareness of EDS and hypermobility disorders among healthcare professionals. Our application demonstrated very clearly what a valuable resource the team provides for the EDS and HSD community.

‘Remarkable Patience, Flexibility, and Commitment’

UVA Physicians Group (UPG) recently launched a new recognition platform, Achievers. It is much like a social media page, and UPG employees can use the platform to provide shoutouts and kudos for each other. This new system also allows for easier feedback to Workday, service award gifts, and future implementation for an updated point-based recognition.

The launch was a big lift, and Samantha Strong, Senior HR Consultant, Organizational Development, UVA Physicians Group, and Lisa (Hudnall) Wideman, Chief of Human Resources, UVA Physicians Group, shared this about their colleagues’ efforts:

“We wanted to take a moment to recognize Lorie, Jen, J., and the Workday HCM Integration team for their incredible support in bringing the Achievers platform to life for UPG. This launch came with its share of complexities, and throughout it all, this team showed remarkable patience, flexibility, and commitment. They approached every challenge with a solutions-focused mindset, remained steady through the ups and downs, and consistently kept the work moving forward.

“What stood out most was how they showed up as true partners. They were responsive, collaborative, and always willing to step in and help navigate both expected and unexpected hurdles. Their positive approach and perseverance played a significant role in getting us to a successful launch.

“We are incredibly grateful for their efforts and the impact they’ve made on this important initiative. Thank you for your leadership in supporting such a strong and dedicated team.”

Webinar Replay: Unified Communications

Abstract visual representation of interconnected user icons symbolising social networking, teamwork, and communication in a technology-driven environment, emphasising the power of digital connections.

Unified Communications is UVA Health’s initiative to bring the tools we use to coordinate patient care into one connected experience within Epic. By integrating on-call scheduling, role-based team organization, secure text messaging, and mobile access through apps like Haiku, Canto, and Rover — this effort reduces the need to toggle between multiple systems and makes it easier to quickly find and message the right person.

On April 30, a webinar was hosted to provide an overview of the tools and functions going online once Epic Secure Chat is deployed on May 20. Access a replay of the webinar (passcode: jnV2?^f2).

For additional information and training materials, please visit the Epic Learning Library where you will also find a schedule for demonstrations beginning Tuesday, May 5.
