Blood and Body Fluid Exposure Reporting
Please be advised that PIC #1523 is being retired following our transition to Epic Secure Chat. For blood or body fluid exposures, please contact the Secure Chat group UVMC Employee Blood and Body Fluid (BBF) Exposure to ensure the appropriate response is initiated promptly.
Managers: please communicate this change verbally with your teams. We will be working to update all locations where the old information is present.
Travel and Symptom Screening Now Active in Epic for Ebola and Measles
Given increased global activity and out of an abundance of caution, UVA Health has updated its Travel and Symptom Screening tool in Epic across all UVA Health medical centers and ambulatory clinics to support early identification of patients with potential Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) or measles exposure.
Please begin incorporating screening into both scheduling and check-in workflows as soon as operationally feasible, but no later than June 1 at 7 a.m.
- Ebola Virus Disease (EVD): An Our Practice Advisory (OPA) will fire when a patient reports at least one EVD-compatible symptom and travel within the past 21 days to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, or South Sudan. The advisory includes links to CDC and WHO Ebola resources.
- Measles: An OPA will fire when a patient reports measles-compatible symptoms and/or any relevant exposure history. Screening applies across all locations given the prior confirmed outbreak in central Virginia.
In both cases, please act promptly on the advisory guidance and follow established isolation and infection prevention protocols.
Leaders: please share this information verbally with any team members without ready access to email.
Thank you for your continued vigilance in protecting our patients and staff.

Appreciation
‘Forever Grateful’ | Kudos to Our UVA Health Colleagues
To best serve our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their healthcare experience. Below is a selection of feedback praising our team members:
- "Colleen at Foot and Ankle reception is a delight! She puts you at ease. I always feel like I've just been invited into her home and we're about to sit down for a cup of coffee. Also, she remembers names and faces amazingly well — very impressive!”
- "All the staff seem to know why I'm there and who I'm seeing at upcoming appointments. I like that everyone is on a first-name basis. I'm always asked how I would like to be addressed — very respectful means of communication, very important to be acknowledged as a 'real person' and not just another case. UVA Health should be a template for other medical facilities. I choose to travel more than an hour for treatment, knowing that I'm getting the best care.”
- "I would recommend Dr. Douvas to anyone. He was the first person to genuinely explain my diagnosis and treatment plan in a way that made sense. That has stuck with me. He sees me as a person and even now — six years after treatment has ended — he remembers things about me. I am forever grateful for him and the care I received at UVA Health.”
Thank you to our team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care!

He's got a terrific knack for explaining everything in clear and concise language. His supporting staff are also outstanding! Having him and them as my GI team is well worth the 160 miles (one way) I travel to see them.”
- “Dr. Byrnes and his team were very supportive and straightforward with everything I was going through. He took the time to sit down and talk with me and my husband about the worst-case scenario. He was very understanding and constantly checked in on us. His bedside manner was amazing. He talked to us like he was one of us. I was very appreciative of Dr. Byrnes and his team.”
Thank you to our team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care!

Training Materials for Unified Communications Available on the Epic Learning Library
Unified Communications is UVA Health’s initiative to bring the tools we use to coordinate patient care into one connected experience within Epic. By integrating on-call scheduling, role-based team organization, secure text messaging, and mobile access through apps like Haiku, Canto, and Rover — this effort reduces the need to toggle among multiple systems and makes it easier to quickly find and message the right person.
To support this effort, training materials are available within the Epic Learning Library. This includes:
- Secure Chat computer-based training
- Instructions on Secure Chat functions, such as managing groups
- Training on Haiku and Rover mobile apps
Additional materials will be added prior to go-live May 20. Virtual Secure Chat Demos also are available. We will continue to provide updates as new training becomes available.

Appreciation
‘The Care Was Wonderful’ | Kudos to Our UVA Health Colleagues
To best serve our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their healthcare experience. Below is a selection of feedback praising our team members:
- "Janet Sturtevant, MEd, CCC-A, was amazing! She explained the test — I had been very anxious/nervous about the procedure. But once we talked, I was totally at ease and OK with the test. She explained everything clearly — a patient, professional, knowledgeable, and reassuring audiologist! And: She has a great sense of humor!”
- "I had the most wonderful experience with my physical therapist, Valeria Nichaus. She explained everything so I could understand the reason for doing each exercise. [I am] doing my exercises as she prescribed every day and now walking my driveway, as well. She is the best!”
- "The care was wonderful and I was treated with dignity [during] the entire visit. All nurses and staff were great, but nurse Mousumi Franks was exceptional in all duties and made my stay so much more pleasant and comfortable. My whole family were impressed by her care and concern.”
Thank you to our team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care!

- UVA School of Medicine faculty with a primary appointment there will participate in the Standpoint AAMC survey April 7-May 15.
- UVA School of Nursing faculty and staff will participate in the AACN Leading Across Multidimensional Perspectives (LAMP) Culture and Climate Survey April 1-May 15.
- All other UVA Health team members who joined the organization prior to March 2, 2026 — including those employed with University Medical Center, UVA Community Health (except physicians and APPs), UVA School of Medicine (staff), UPG, and Claude Moore Health Sciences Library — will participate in the UVA Health Engagement Survey conducted by Press Ganey May 4-18. To learn more about the Press Ganey survey, read the FAQs on Connect.

USB Storage Device Blocking Extending to New Areas
To strengthen our cyber defenses, UVA Health has begun blocking the use of USB storage devices (e.g., “thumb” drives and other external storage drives) on all UVA Health-issued personal computers (PCs). The next implementation phase began May 6, extending USB device blocking to the following areas:
- University Medical Center (UMC) shared inpatient PCs
- All Emergency Department patient room PCs (UMC and UVA Community Health facilities)
Instead of USB devices, team members should use their Microsoft OneDrive cloud storage account for secure data storage and sharing. This change does not affect USB-connected mice, keyboards, phone chargers, or similar accessories. To learn more about the USB blocking initiative, visit Connect.
Virtual Secure Chat Demos also will be available May 11-19. We will continue to provide updates as new training becomes available.

Appreciation
Celebrating a Successful Vue PACS Go-Live
A major milestone for UVA Health with the successful go-live of the Vue PACS — an advanced imaging platform that enhances how medical images are stored, accessed, and shared across the health system. By improving speed, reliability, and accessibility, Vue PACS will help streamline workflows for clinicians and support more timely, informed patient care.
“This was a tremendous team effort,” says Sonney Sapra, Chief Information Technology Officer. “I’m grateful for the professionalism and dedication that ensured a smooth transition and a positive experience for our clinicians.”
Dozens of team members contributed to the planning, execution, and around-the-clock support that made last week's go-live seamless, alongside strong leadership from Greg Wackett and Glenn Fielding and valuable partnership from Philips experts who traveled from across the country and abroad to be onsite. We are extremely grateful to the team members who spent many long hours working on this project. It would not have been possible without their dedication, skill, and knowledge.
The impact of this upgrade will be felt across the health system. “Advanced medical imaging is critical to our patients and providers,” says Cree Gaskin, interim Chair of Radiology and Medical Imaging, and Chief Medical Imaging Information Officer. “This major upgrade modernizes our ability to securely store, access, and view medical images, helping our teams deliver the best care possible.”
As UVA Health continues to invest in innovative technologies, this successful implementation represents more than a system upgrade — it’s a step forward in strengthening our digital foundation, empowering our care teams, and shaping the future of how we deliver care to our patients and communities.

Appreciation
‘Very Impressed With Everyone’ | Kudos to Our UVA Health Colleagues
To best serve our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their healthcare experience. Below is a selection of feedback praising our team members:
- "Stephanie was my nurse, and Michael was the MRI technician — they were both fabulous, super-professional, courteous, and attentive to my needs. Truly appreciate being treated [so well] during my visit. They were both very personable and I was able to talk to them with ease. I hope they are both recognized for superior service.”
- "This was my first experience at UVA Health for medical concerns. I was so very impressed with everyone I met and/or talked with from the planning of the procedure — the scheduling, the telehealth call with the physician, and the instructions sent prior to the procedure — all the way through the procedure, the team in the colonoscopy suite, the recovery process, and my discharge! I would highly encourage anyone with medical concerns to come to UVA Health for treatment. The hospital rating is impressive. The kindness shown to [my family] while [they] waited for me was impressive. I have had no issues or complaints before, during, or after my treatment. Thank you! Go Hoos!”
- "I had good nurses who were there to help me. I would like to give you the name of one lady who was so awesome in my care. Her name is Dionevi Miguel, RN. She is an unbelievable caregiver. Whatever I needed was made sure to be given to me by Dionevi. You have a wonderful asset in Ms. Dionevi. I would praise her to anyone who would listen. She definitely deserves recognition, and I hope that you make that available. Thank you.”
Thank you to our team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care!

USB Storage Device Blocking Extending to New Areas
To strengthen our cyber defenses, UVA Health has begun blocking the use of USB storage devices (e.g., “thumb” drives and other external storage drives) on all UVA Health-issued personal computers (PCs). The next implementation phase begins May 6, extending USB device blocking to the following areas:
- University Medical Center (UMC) shared inpatient PCs
- All Emergency Department patient room PCs (UMC and UVA Community Health facilities)
Instead of USB devices, team members should use their Microsoft OneDrive cloud storage account for secure data storage and sharing. This change does not affect USB-connected mice, keyboards, phone chargers, or similar accessories. To learn more about the USB blocking initiative, visit Connect.
Virtual Secure Chat Demos also will be available May 11-19. We will continue to provide updates as new training becomes available.

Guidelines for Service Animals
Recently, we have seen an increase in visitors and guests bringing in animals and identifying them as service animals. Below are guidelines to help navigate such situations:
- Service animals can only be dogs or miniature ponies; no other animals are recognized as service animals by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Dogs are by far the most common.
- By law, there are only two questions that we are allowed to ask to ascertain whether or not it is a service dog:
- Is the dog a service animal required because of a disability?
- What work or task has the dog been trained to perform?
- Per our policy, failure to answer the above questions may result in exclusion of the animal; for example, if the dog does not perform a task, but rather it is their merely as a presence that ameliorates the impact of a disability, it is classified as an emotional support animal (ESA) rather than a service animal. ESAs do not have right of public access in the way that service animals do.
- However, UVA personnel may not ask questions about the nature of the individual’s disability; require proof that the animal has been certified, trained, or licensed as a service animal; or require that the service animal demonstrate the task it performs.
- Service animals and their handlers must abide by behavioral expectations as set for in UVA’s University Animal Policy (SEC-044).

Appreciation
EDS and Hypermobility Disorders Center Now Part of CORE Network of Excellence
Congratulations to our colleagues in the EDS and Hypermobility Disorders Center on UVA Health’s designation by The Ehlers-Danlos Society as a CORE (Collaboration, Outreach, Research, and Education) Network of Excellence. This prestigious recognition places UVA Health among a select group of leading centers worldwide, united in advancing care for patients with Ehlers-Danlos syndromes and hypermobility disorders.
“This distinction reflects a rigorous evaluation of clinical expertise, multidisciplinary care, and commitment to advancing research and education in Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS) and related disorders,” says Dacre Knight, MD, MS, FACP, Associate Professor of Medicine, Medical Director (pictured), EDS and Hypermobility Disorders Center. “For patients and referring providers, this designation signals a trusted destination for comprehensive, evidence-based care, where complex presentations receive coordinated individualized evaluation and treatment. It affirms that our center meets international standards for excellence, offering a reliable pathway for diagnosis and long-term support.”
The CORE Network of Excellence is aimed at improving the quality of care and increasing awareness of EDS and hypermobility disorders among healthcare professionals. Our application demonstrated very clearly what a valuable resource the team provides for the EDS and HSD community.
Dr. Knight adds, “For UVA Health, this recognition underscores a broader institutional commitment to innovation, collaboration, and leadership in complex chronic disease care. It strengthens our role as a leading, national referral hub, while advancing our mission to improve outcomes, expand access, and contribute meaningfully to the evolving science of connective tissue disorders.” Congrats to all!

Updated Visitation Guidelines
Effective Tuesday, May 5 | Visitation guidelines will be updated and placed across our units. Please familiarize yourself with the key changes below and communicate them to patients and families as appropriate.
General Visitation
- Room capacity: Care teams may limit the number of visitors and care partners at any time based on clinical judgment, patient privacy, and space availability.
- Visitor passes: All visitors (except for pediatric care partners) must obtain a pass from the University Hospital lobby information desk or the Emergency Department registration area. This applies to team members, as well. Passes must be visible at all times. Visitors may not enter a patient's room without a pass for that patient.
- Pediatric care partners: Visitor passes are not required for care partners. Care partners will receive a green wristband. Orange Care Partner bands will no longer be used at University Medical Center.
- Hand hygiene: All visitors and care partners are expected to perform hand hygiene upon entering and exiting patient rooms. Non-compliance should be escalated to unit leadership and the patient's primary care team.
Hours
- Overnight hours: Visitation is restricted to one visitor, 9 p.m.-5 a.m., for all adult inpatients.
Minors and Dependent Visitors
- Visitors under 18 and adults unable to function independently must be supervised by an adult (18+) at all times.
- Due to safety concerns, infants and young children may not visit patients on isolation without approval from unit-based leadership.
Please direct any questions to unit-based leadership. Thank you for your continued attention to patient safety and experience.

Appreciation
‘Remarkable Patience, Flexibility, and Commitment’
UVA Physicians Group (UPG) recently launched a new recognition platform, Achievers. It is much like a social media page, and UPG employees can use the platform to provide shoutouts and kudos for each other. This new system also allows for easier feedback to Workday, service award gifts, and future implementation for an updated point-based recognition.
The launch was a big lift, and Samantha Strong, Senior HR Consultant, Organizational Development, UVA Physicians Group, and Lisa (Hudnall) Wideman, Chief of Human Resources, UVA Physicians Group, shared this about their colleagues’ efforts:
“We wanted to take a moment to recognize Lorie, Jen, J., and the Workday HCM Integration team for their incredible support in bringing the Achievers platform to life for UPG. This launch came with its share of complexities, and throughout it all, this team showed remarkable patience, flexibility, and commitment. They approached every challenge with a solutions-focused mindset, remained steady through the ups and downs, and consistently kept the work moving forward.
“What stood out most was how they showed up as true partners. They were responsive, collaborative, and always willing to step in and help navigate both expected and unexpected hurdles. Their positive approach and perseverance played a significant role in getting us to a successful launch.
“We are incredibly grateful for their efforts and the impact they’ve made on this important initiative. Thank you for your leadership in supporting such a strong and dedicated team.”

Webinar Replay: Unified Communications
Unified Communications is UVA Health’s initiative to bring the tools we use to coordinate patient care into one connected experience within Epic. By integrating on-call scheduling, role-based team organization, secure text messaging, and mobile access through apps like Haiku, Canto, and Rover — this effort reduces the need to toggle between multiple systems and makes it easier to quickly find and message the right person.
On April 30, a webinar was hosted to provide an overview of the tools and functions going online once Epic Secure Chat is deployed on May 20. Access a replay of the webinar (passcode: jnV2?^f2).
For additional information and training materials, please visit the Epic Learning Library where you will also find a schedule for demonstrations beginning Tuesday, May 5.
Operations
2026 UVA Health Engagement Surveys
Every few years, UVA Health team members take part in confidential, systemwide surveying to help us understand how we’re progressing toward our goal of being a best place to work — a key priority in our 10-year strategic plan.
How do I know which survey I am taking?
- UVA Community Health physicians and APPs do not take the Press Ganey Engagement Survey.
Every voice matters. Creating the best place to work is something we build together. Your feedback helps shape the tools, support, and investments our teams need to succeed.

Appreciation
‘Enormously Grateful’ | Kudos to Our UVA Health Colleagues
To best serve our community, UVA Health regularly surveys our patients on their healthcare experience. Below is a selection of feedback praising our team members:
- "Dr. Duensing and his entire staff were exceptional in every way. I had complete confidence in their skills and knowledge and goal of completing a safe and successful procedure. They worked seamlessly as a team, and I am enormously grateful for their incomparable services to me.”
- "My stay at UVA Health was great. The nurses were always professional, always concerned about my health. The surgical team was very professional — one or more checked on me every day. This would help me relax. I would like to say this was the best care I have ever received at a hospital. I want to thank Dr. Ragosta. This was my third time getting his help. He said [his team was the best.] He was right. Please thank them all.”
- "The Blue Team, 5 Central, was incredibly compassionate, caring, smart, efficient, and warm! My husband and I were so blessed by each of them. We will always remember their kindness and helpfulness.”
Thank you to our team members for providing outstanding, compassionate, and safe care!
