West Complex Labs to Move to North Fork in 2027
In November 2027, the West Complex labs and a subset of testing from our Clinical Lab currently located on 11th Street will relocate to North Fork, joining other key functions at Town Center 4. The move will consolidate Toxicology, Genomics, Cytogenetics, Flow Cytometry, Immunology, and the Infectious Molecular Lab into a single, modern building — a significant step forward for how we deliver care and support our mission.
"This move is about positioning our labs — and our patients — for the future," said Jen DeArment, Associate Chief Medical Laboratories. "Bringing these functions together under one roof gives us the ability to grow our services, invest in new equipment, and serve more patients across the Commonwealth."
The North Fork site will feature new equipment, expanded service capabilities, as well as a dedicated student lab to support the education of the workforce. It's a tangible investment in both the present and the future of our clinical programs.
Patients across the region will also benefit. The move positions UVA Health to accommodate significant growth in testing volume, driven in part by the expansion of cancer services and the continued growth of UVA Health in Northern Virginia. As more testing transitions into the network, North Fork will provide the space, equipment, and capacity to meet that demand, including an expanded test menu. Inter-lab coordination will ensure all testing stays within the UVA Health system.
“The addition of a dedicated student lab at North Fork is a meaningful investment in the next generation of pathologists and laboratory professionals,” said Chris Moskaluk, MD, PhD, Walter Reed Professor and Chair of Pathology. “This move strengthens our ability to deliver on our education mission while continuing to provide the exceptional diagnostic services our patients and providers depend on."
Between now and 2027, clinical teams will be engaged to assess workflows and ensure testing priorities — especially for time-sensitive results — are protected throughout the transition.
"We have a real opportunity to strengthen what we offer and do it in a way that doesn't disrupt the quality our patients and providers depend on," said Reid Adams, MD, Chief Medical Officer for UVA Health. "The teams working on this transition are focused on making sure our most critical testing capabilities remain fast, reliable, and accessible throughout."
More updates will be shared as planning advances. In the meantime, questions can be directed to Jen DeArment, Associate Chief Medical Laboratories.
