"Much of the young patient's life was spent in the hospital and marked by frequent foster placements. Through every hospitalization and transition, one constant source of comfort remained: Robert Holmes," shares Erynn Langhans, BSN, RN, CCRN, UVA Health University Medical Center Staffing Resource Office (SRO), in her emotional nomination of the Patient Companion for a BEE (Being Excellent Everyday) Award.

University Medical Center Associate Chief of Business Operations Kathryn King Perkinson, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, CEN, and BEE Award Committee Vice Chair Allisha Shifflett surprised Holmes with the award.

"Like many children — this patient was energetic, curious, and always on the move. Because of underlying conditions, the patient did not always recognize situations that could compromise safety. Robert quickly became much more than a Patient Companion—he became a trusted and steady presence in this child’s life.

"Robert demonstrated a level of compassion and commitment that extended far beyond his role. When team members learned the patient would be admitted, SRO often reached out to Robert, knowing the positive impact he had. Robert often adjusted his schedule to be there. The patient responded remarkably well to Robert, and the two took frequent walks in the hospital hallways or by the large windows on 7 Central — watching the world outside.

"During the patient’s final hospitalization, Robert once again was by the child's side, providing comfort and familiarity. As the patient’s condition declined, a Patient Companion was no longer needed, and his family made the heartbreaking decision to compassionately withdraw care. Recognizing the special bond between Robert and the patient, the family specifically asked the care team to notify Robert so he could say goodbye.

"Robert continues to honor the child's memory. Recently, he purchased a specialty tricycle for the pediatric units and donated it in the patient’s name. This generous gift ensures that the patient’s spirit will continue to bring joy to other children.

"Robert’s unwavering compassion, dedication, and genuine connection with this child exemplify the very best of patient-centered care. Robert transformed routine interactions into a meaningful relationship that provided comfort, dignity, and joy to a child who faced extraordinary challenges. His actions continue to inspire those around him and are a testament to the profound difference one caregiver he made in the life of a patient and family."
