Patient Hails Two Team Members for Changing His Perspective on Care Through Their Coordination and Positivity

"They took a genuine interest in my struggles and wanted to use our conversation not only to help me, but others as well.

A UVA Health Prince Wiliam Medical Center patient who admits he was not looking forward to rehabilitation therapy now says he's changed his perspective, thanks to the most positive experience he's ever had in healthcare.

And for those stellar efforts, Anshul Misra, PT, DPT, AVPT, LSVT-C, and Surabhi “Chikki” Rao, OT, have earned BEE Awards! “Anshul and Chikki represent all that is good in the service of helping others. I was happy to get to know them and honored to recommend them for this well-deserved award!” hails the patient.

Easing Doubts and Encouraging a New Outlook

“I had the great pleasure of [being treated under the care of Misra and Rao for] physical therapy and occupational therapy [respectively] for two months. It's odd to describe PT and OT as a 'great pleasure,' as, typically, no one truly looks forward to either. Having to confront issues with several parts of the body is not something I was looking forward to — at the start I did not want to go. The usual thoughts entered my mind: ‘Will this really help?’ and ‘Do I really want to take the time?' — but both Anshul’s and Chikki's approach was perfect!”

“Not only did they successfully strengthen my body, they helped instill a resolve in me to keep working at home. They also shared my therapy with one another to make sure the work they were performing was complementary and best suited my needs.”

Heartfelt Conversations and the Importance of Listening

"They are great communicators, but more importantly, they are both great listeners. They listened to my day-to-day struggles and were both extremely interested in the research I was doing to address my issues. I was pleasantly surprised when, during one of my follow-up visits, they both separately told me they had researched the things I brought up. This was impressive because it was clear they took a genuine interest in my struggles and wanted to use our conversation not only to help me, but others as well. We continued having heartfelt positive conversations about ongoing therapy.”

“Therapists have a short time with patients to make a difference in their lives. They have to maximize the time they have to tailor a plan that gets the best progress and results for me. I went into this with very low expectations and came out stronger and determined to continue. Never before have I had such a positive experience with therapy or the entire medical field!”

In Their Own Words

Misra (right) has worked with UVA Health for four and a half years. She hopes to advance her expertise in vestibular physical therapy, post-concussion rehab, and cervical and temporomandibular complex disorders. "My goal is to continually expand my clinical knowledge and provide the highest level of patient-centered care," she explains. "Ultimately, I strive to be recognized not only for my clinical skills, but also for the empathy, encouragement, and positive impact I bring to every patient interaction.”

She adds, “I feel truly honored to receive the BEE Award because it reflects the trust, appreciation, and support of those around me, which means a great deal to me. It inspires me to continue working hard, supporting others, and contributing with both heart and dedication every day.”

Similarly, Rao (left), who has been with UVA Health for 16 years and aims to continue growing professionally and personally, reflects that winning the BEE Award is an important acknowledgement that reflects the collective effort of patient care.
