This May, our teams proudly joined the national movement to Turn Our ICU Blue in honor of Critical Care Awareness and Recognition Month. With creativity, teamwork, and plenty of blue spirit, our units transformed their spaces to celebrate the dedication of the clinicians who care for our sickest patients.

To mark the occasion, each ICU was challenged to design blue‑themed decorations of their choice — a visual tribute to the compassion, resilience, and collaboration that define critical care. These displays also became part of a friendly competition, with photos taken during rounding on May 15 to be reviewed by the Critical Care Subcommittee on May 22 for a special blue‑themed prize.

During rounding, teams enjoyed blue cupcakes and balloons, delivered to both day and night shifts as a small gesture of appreciation. Staff also showcased their many shades of blue scrubs — and even blue shoes, thanks to NNICU — in spirited group photos that captured the camaraderie of the day.

This year’s celebration highlighted the creativity, unity, and heart of our ICU teams. Thank you to everyone who provides exceptional care to our most critically ill patients at UVA Health.
