Chest X-Ray Services for Patients With Confirmed or Suspected COVID-19 Relocated to Radiology and Medical Imaging Lee Street
Due to lower volumes and to ensure good stewardship of UVA Health’s X-ray services, portable chest radiograph services for patients with confirmed or suspected COVID-19 (PUI) will relocate from the UVA COVID Clinic to Radiology and Medical Imaging Lee Street on the ground floor of the Education Resource Center. Providers can order a one- or two-view chest X-ray for a patient by placing a referral order to UVEC RAD DIAGNOSTIC in Epic. Walk-in X-ray services are offered from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. However, to support social distancing safety protocols, a courtesy call to 434.297.5352 is recommended so that the radiology team can expedite imaging and reduce the time patients may be in a common waiting area.

Appreciation
Thank You, Diabetes Educators! Diabetes affects 34.2 million people in the U.S., including 7.3 million who are unaware they have the disease. Another 88 million are at risk for developing diabetes. Management and support for those with diabetes and prediabetes places the diabetes educator at the helm of the healthcare team. At UVA Health, doctors collaborate with Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialists (CDCES) to support and educate patients and their families. CDCESs are licensed healthcare professionals — registered nurses, registered dietitians, pharmacists, and others — who receive special training in diabetes management. They are dispersed throughout UVA Health and UVA Children’s, including at the Diabetes Education and Management Program at UVA Fontaine Research Park. CDCESs partners with patients, family members, and caregivers to teach patients self-management skills and provide education and support for providers in the care of their patients. To bring together adult and pediatric diabetes educators from the inpatient and outpatient settings, a Diabetes Educator Collaborative (DEC) formed at UVA Health. The DEC works to align diabetes education resources and initiatives across the healthcare continuum so patients and families can receive consistent information, improved transitions of care, and improved health literacy. During the final days of National Diabetes Awareness Month, a huge thank you goes out to all team members who are supporting those with diabetes. Diabetes can be a difficult disease to manage, requiring considerable education and constant monitoring, and you are up to the challenge every day! Thank you for giving hope, health, and information to your patients and their loved ones. Check out the South Tower tonight, which will be illuminated blue for diabetes awareness.

Children in Our Community Are Safer Thanks to You!
UVA Health recently began offering COVID-19 vaccinations to children 5-11 years old, and last week, approximately 1,200 children aged 5-11 received vaccines at the Battle Building, Northridge, and Orange. Vaccines have also been administered at the Pediatric Community Vaccination Center and several community sites in partnership with the Blue Ridge Health District. This could not have been accomplished without all the help from our RNs, MDs, CMAs, pharmacists, Epic trainers, and UVA volunteers. Thank you all who gave your time and made the experience a positive one for all the children. View photos of the successful first day at the Pediatric Community Vaccination Center on Connect.

Gratitude, Thanks, and Appreciation for Virginia Healthcare Professionals
On Wednesday, Nov. 10, The Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association (VHHA) stopped by UVA Health to offer a thank-you to team members who care for communities, protect public health, and respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The VHAA arrived in its mobile billboard truck, which is being driven around Virginia. The truck is broadcasting a video thanking hospital team members and displaying other supportive messaging to provide an in-person show of support for the hard-working caregivers, clinicians and technicians, and support staff who keep hospitals running. During the tour, VHHA staff distributed gift bags to hospital team members as a token of appreciation for all they do each day to keep Virginians healthy.
VHHA hopes this tour will help refocus public attention on the critical work of frontline healthcare providers and remind the public, patients, and families to treat them with respect and kindness. “Words can’t adequately express how appreciative we are of the thousands of caregivers, clinicians, and support staff who work in Virginia hospitals and have been on duty day and night to serve patients and their communities during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic,” said VHHA President and CEO Sean T. Connaughton. Read more and see photos of the event on Connect .

- Pfizer vaccine: first shot by Dec. 14; second by Jan. 4

CELEBRATING CULTURES
Happy Diwali!
Cultural celebrations provide the opportunity to recognize the complexities and richness of each cultural identity. At UVA Health, it is important that we all understand and appreciate these cultural stories and journeys that contribute richly to the greater American narrative. In the UVA Health Update on Nov. 1, we acknowledged the Monacan Tribe to celebrate Native American Heritage Month. Diwali also began this week. The dates of Diwali are determined by the India calendar and change every year, ranging from October to November. Diwali, also known as the festival of lights, is celebrated for five days, and each day has a theme. Though some themes of Diwali are universal, such as the triumph of good over evil and darkness paving the way for light, Diwali is observed by Hindus, Sikhs, and Jains, and each community celebrates Diwali for different reasons.
- Diwali Day 1 -- Nov. 2: Dwadashi/Dhanteras
- Diwali Day 2 -- Nov. 3: Trayodashi/Choti Diwali
- Diwali Day 3 -- Nov. 4: Amavasya/Diwali
- Diwali Day 4 -- Nov. 5: Pratipada/Padwa

But, they do so much more than just operate the machine. For many, a mammography tech may be the only person a patient may interact with before, during, and after their exam. Patients come to rely on mammography techs for support, comfort, and connection during an uncomfortable and potentially nerve-wracking time. For techs, that close bond with patients is what makes their job special. Thank you to the mammography techs at UVA Health for offering tremendous support to our patients! Thank You for Getting Vaccinated!
Today marks an important date in UVA Health’s ongoing efforts to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and to help end this pandemic. Requiring COVID-19 vaccination for all team members who work in-person by Nov. 1 is a clear commitment to our patients, team members, and community to do all we can to provide a safe, COVID-19 free environment. It is with extraordinary gratitude that we thank our team members for answering the call to be vaccinated against COVID-19. While we know an overwhelming majority of team members (over 97%) have been vaccinated, more detailed updates will be shared in the upcoming days.
As a reminder, UVA Health also requires all fully remote team members to be vaccinated by Dec. 8, unless they have a University-approved religious or medical exemption. Any fully remote team member not meeting the vaccination requirement as of Dec. 8 will be subject to disciplinary action up to and including termination.

Appreciation
Native American Heritage Month Begins Nov. 1 | In 1990, President George H.W. Bush approved a joint resolution designating November National American Indian Heritage Month. Similar proclamations, under variants on the name (including “Native American Heritage Month” and “National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month”) have been issued each year since 1994. This year, Gov. Ralph Northam wrote a proclamation declaring November Native American Heritage Month “to celebrate the thousands of American Indians in Virginia whose abilities and contributions strengthen Virginia’s economy, enrich Virginia’s diverse culture, and invigorate Virginia’s communities.”
UVA was built by enslaved laborers on Monacan tribal land. Due to this complex and challenging history, UVA has committed to seeking opportunities to engage in meaningful relationship building and acknowledge with respect that we live, learn, and work on the traditional territory of the Monacan Indian Nation. Acknowledgment coupled with authentic and sustained relationships is a powerful way of showing respect. Learn more from this Kluge-Ruhe resource about how to acknowledge and create broader public awareness of the resilience and resistance of Indigenous nations.
Together, the Medical Center, School of Medicine, School of Nursing, Claude Moore Health Sciences Library, UVA Physicians Group, and UVA Community Health form a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. UVA Health recognizes the Native Americans who are a valuable part of that whole. Share what your Native American heritage means to you by sending a note to Connect at uvaconnect@virginia.edu. The Connect team will compile and publish the stories received on the Connect site.
