Parking Update for Emmet/Ivy Parkers: New Location at Fontaine
Dear Team,
Following an update earlier this week about steps we’re taking to improve parking across our system, we’re sharing an important change to our parking operations designed to increase space availability and provide a more reliable experience for our commuters.
Beginning Monday, March 9, team members who currently park at Emmet/Ivy will be directed to park at the Fontaine Parking Garage (located at 1055 Natural Resources Dr.) and ride a dedicated shuttle to and from University Medical Center. This change provides access to a newer parking facility with greater availability while supporting a more reliable and consistent parking experience.
How You’ll Get to Work: The Purple Line Shuttle
To support this change, we’re launching the Purple Line, a new shuttle service that consolidates the existing Red and Blue lines into one route, providing direct service between Fontaine Parking Garage and University Medical Center. Once launched, the Purple Line will provide:
- Frequent bus service, with pickups every 3-5 minutes.
- Direct, reliable transportation between Fontaine and University Hospital.
- A convenient and predictable commute experience.
No additional permit is required to park at the Fontaine Parking Garage. An existing Commuter permit is valid at both the Fontaine Research Park (garage only) and Scott Stadium. In addition, team members who park at the Fontaine Parking Garage will continue to be eligible for monthly parking reimbursement.
Emmitt/Ivy Garage Access
Beginning March 9, parking at the Emmet/Ivy Garage will require an EIG permit as part of broader changes to balance parking demand and improve availability across our system. Team members may apply for this permit; however, it will carry an annual parking rate that is not eligible for reimbursement through the parking subsidy program.
In addition, bus service from the Emmet/Ivy Garage will transition to the Silver Line to better align routes with updated parking patterns. While this route does serve University Medical Center, buses will operate less frequently than current service.
Answering Your Questions
We know this represents a change, and we expect team members will have questions. We want to be available to listen, share information, and help make this transition as smooth as possible.
For more details about this parking change and the Purple Line, please visit the UVA Health Parking website, where you’ll find a frequently asked questions section. Members of the Parking and Transportation team will also host information stations at the Emmet/Ivy Garage on Feb. 18, Feb. 25, and March 4, 2-6 p.m., to share details and answer questions in person.
This update is one of several steps we’re taking to improve the overall parking experience by expanding capacity, enhancing transportation options, and offering more affordable choices. We appreciate your flexibility and partnership as we continue working to make parking easier and more accessible for everyone.
