Changes to Chemical Restraint Ordering, Documentation, and Monitoring
Effective Monday, June 1 | University Medical Center is updating practices around chemical restraint ordering, post-administration monitoring, and documentation. These changes are intended to make the definition of chemical restraint clearer, address how chemical restraints are documented, and how patients are monitored — not to change clinical decision-making around when or whether they are used.
Beginning June 1, please note the following:
- Providers: A new Epic workflow will be launched for ordering chemical restraints.
- Nursing: Following administration of a chemical restraint, sedation level and respiratory status will be monitored.
Training can be accessed via the Nursing Center for Excellence site. Questions? Email Michelle Longley, Restraint Committee Chair.

Appreciation
The Power of Nurses: 2026 National Nurses Week at UVA Health
UVA Health celebrated 2026 National Nurses Week from Charlottesville to Northern Virginia — honoring the around the clock contributions of thousands of nurses in a wide variety of roles and sites. The concept of National Nurses Week began in the early 1950s, but wasn't formally celebrated until the mid-1970s. In 1974, the International Council of Nurses declared May 12 — the birthday of Florence Nightingale, often called the “the founder of modern nursing” — as International Nurses Day. This year's theme: Our Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives.
